Suleiman and Lt. N. If an applicant cannot supply proof of residence, the selection is terminated.”</div> <div dir="ltr"> Besides, he explained that in a local government such as Abadam in Borno State, where there have been claims that non residents applied and were selected, Akande assured that there is no cause for alarm because such people would have to show up for verification on the spot.</div> <div dir="ltr"> He added that there was also a likelihood that a number of applicants may have inputted Abadam inadvertently considering that Abadam LGA is number one on the list of LGAs under the list as posted on the N-Power portal. “There is a good chance,” he continued, “that some applicants may have failed to complete the forms online accurately.”</div> <div dir="ltr"> Such errors are being reviewed and anyone found not to be resident in the LGA would be removed and replaced using the waiting list of applicants.</div> <div dir="ltr"> Said he: “an important aspect of the application was that applicants were told in clear terms that any false information would be grounds for disqualification.”</div> <div dir="ltr"> On how the 200,000 first batch of the N-Power was selected, the SSA Media explained that the selection was not only fair and done transparently, but also with adequate care.</div> <div dir="ltr"> Firstly, 40% of those who applied for the N-Power Teach and Agric were selected, and 50% of those who applied for the Health category, all based on an assessment test.</div> <div dir="ltr"> Then to mitigate the adverse socio-economic circumstances in the North- East an additional 4800 applicants from the region were selected with Borno State getting 1200 and Adamawa, Yobe, Taraba 800 each and Bauchi and Gombe 600 each.</div> <div dir="ltr"> Also to bolster states with low application numbers, an additional 4208 was selected and shared between Bayelsa, Jigawa, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara States. The Federal Ministry of Agric also additionally allocated 6799 applicants in the Agric category to all states across specific crop, fish and livestock targets in order to support government’s self-sufficiency target in Agric produce.</div> <div dir="ltr"> Gender and disability factor were also key in the selection. 46% of those selected, Akande disclosed, are females, while a total of 1126 were successful applicants with disabilities.</div> <div dir="ltr"> Akande then assured that those not selected in the first batch are now in the waiting list until the subsequent batches when they would be considered again, since there are still 300,000 to be selected under this budget cycle.</div> <div dir="ltr"> On why the selection process was based on states of residence rather than states of origin, Akande simply noted that for example, over 42,000 Nigerians applied for the N-Power from Lagos but only 3568 of them originate from Lagos. “Would it then be tenable to say almost 40,000 Bona fide Nigerians who are applicants resident in Lagos should just forget it since they are resident but not origins of the Lagos State?</div> <div dir="ltr"> <br /></div> <div dir="ltr"> <br /></div>

<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpGdUxOOiQ7nSprRAIhPcM0R8KIKy5J9hYSQpGEpFtRGBDDKfWuPZ-1dbl-Og6AHFSpYOzHTsC-PncPqfje489XaebqxTrSKgTGWnzkjdAn3CP2awcKSl3m4YO1peCee6pZd8LiWTpFdmT/s1600/EFCC-e1444332814147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="416" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpGdUxOOiQ7nSprRAIhPcM0R8KIKy5J9hYSQpGEpFtRGBDDKfWuPZ-1dbl-Og6AHFSpYOzHTsC-PncPqfje489XaebqxTrSKgTGWnzkjdAn3CP2awcKSl3m4YO1peCee6pZd8LiWTpFdmT/s640/EFCC-e1444332814147.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on Monday arraign a Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Godwin Obla before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.<br /> The duo are to be dock before Justice Akeem Oshodi on a 30-count charge of conspiracy to pervert justice by allegedly giving and receiving a bribe of N5 million.<br /> According to the EFCC about $793,800 passed through the judge’s domiciliary accounts between 2012 and 2015 and that the judge allegedly used the money to buy a house in London.<br /> The two accounts, Access Bank (0002649223) and Diamond Bank (0032091183) have since been frozen by the EFCC.<br /> Five of the charges are centered on an alleged N5m bribe given to the judge by the senior advocate while the remaining 25 charges are on the huge amounts that passed through the accounts of Ofili-Ajumogobia and her alleged inability to explain her source of wealth.<br /> The other charges filed against the judge border on forgery, lying, unlawful enrichment and other related offenses.<br /> Ofili-Ajumogobia and Obla have been in the custody of the EFCC for about 17 days following revelations that the senior advocate paid N5m into her account in 2015 at a time she was presiding over one of his cases.<br /> While Ofili-Ajumogobia allegedly claimed the money was a deposit for a N40m property she sold to Obla, the senior advocate said the money was a payment for building materials.<br /> Obla also insisted that he did not know that the account belonged to the judge.<br /> In the charge with number LD/367/C/16, the anti-graft agency insisted that the defendants allegedly committed the offence on May 21, 2015, when they conspired to pervert the course of justice with the sum of N5 million.<br /> The said sum according to the EFCC was transfered to one Nigel & Colive Ltd, in relation to a charge number FHC/L/C/482/10.<br /> Specifically, the commission maintained that Justice Ajumogobia is the sole signatory to Nigel & Colive Ltd, adding that both defendants conspired to pervert the course of justice in contravention of the provisions of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.<br /> According to counts one to four, Obla (SAN) was particularly accused of offering gratification in the said sum, by transferring the money from his company’s account Obla & Co., domiciled with the United Bank for Africa, to Nigel & Colive.<br /> The transfer according to the charge was made so as to restrain a public officer from acting in exercise of her official duties.<br /> Count five of the charge stated that Justice Ajumogobia unlawfully enriched herself by receiving a transfer or the sum of N18 million from one Arkleem Oil and Gas Ltd, to her Diamond bank account.<br /> According to counts 6 to 20 of the charge, the anti-graft agency argued that Justice Ajumogobia received a transfer of monies from various outlets to her Diamond bank account to the tune of over 788,000 dollars.<br /> Even in counts 29, the Federal High Court judge was accused of forging a deed of assignment between a company, County City Bricks Dev. Co. Ltd and Nigel & Colive Ltd.<br /> Justice Ajumogobia was equally alleged to have made a false statement to the EFCC, that she was on admission at one Gold Cross Hospital, located at Bourdillon, Ikoyi, which statement was found to be false.<br /> The anti-graft agency insisted that the offences are contrary to the provisions of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011 as well as the EFCC (establishment) Act, 2004.<br /> <br />

He was 90, and in August, he had himself predicted that he would not live beyond 90. He had been sick for about ten years, compelling him to hand over power as Cuba’s leader in 2006. It is instructive that Castro’s death, like his life, was attended by divided opinions. No other man has been more controversial in Latin America and indeed in the whole of the Americas in the last 50 years.<br />        He was hated and loved in almost equal measure, praised by those who admired him, and denounced by those who objected to his politics and style. This much was illustrated as the news of his death spread: while Cubans in Havana and across the country mourned the death of the<em>El Commandante,</em> the father of modern Cuba, and perhaps the last of the iconic revolutionary figures of the 20^th Century, 145 kilometres away to the North, in Miami, Florida, many Cubans in diaspora celebrated the death of the man they consider a tyrant who drove them away from their homeland.<br />        Fidel Castro, having survived countless assassination attempts over the years, was fully aware more than anyone else, of the emotional reactions to the choices he made by all categories of persons including ideologues, capitalists, family members and plebeians alike. His response to this was the iconic declaration: “Condemn me. It is of no importance. History will absolve me.” This was in 1953, after the Moncada Barracks event, but that statement more or less defined his life-long attitude to power, leadership and situations. As Cuba’s strong man, he ran his country from 1959 to 2006, like a messiah, giving the people one of the best human development indexes in the world: a developed medical system, free healthcare, free education, advancements in science, research and agriculture, the transformation of Cuba into a centre of culture, and a strong presence in global politics.  <br />       But it was Fidel’s politics that turned him into both the symbolic and controversial figure that he became. When he drove out the Fulgencio Batista government in 1959, he was regarded as the messianic revolutionary, along with his band of freedom fighters, who had come to save the people in what became known as the 26^th of July Movement. Batista’s military dictatorship imposed enormous misery upon the people and encouraged the transformation of Havana into the playground of the rich, the Mafia, the criminal and the corrupt.  Fidel, as he was simply known, promised his people “Fatherland or Death” – (<em>“patria o muerte”</em>), constitutional rule, free and fair elections, and a brighter future. He soon embarked on a series of brutal executions, victimization of his political opponents and mass repression, justified on the basis of the need to consolidate the revolution.  His transition from freedom fighter to an autocrat, and the gradual shift from a people’s revolution to a one-man revolution, is one of the striking contradictions of his legacy.<br />      Perhaps the most defining marker of this legacy is Cuba’s relationship with the United States under his watch. By 1960, the would-be socialist democrat had declared that he is a Marxist-Leninist and with his embrace of the Soviet Union, he brought the Cold War, one of the most significant events of the 20^th Century to the doorstep of the United States. This marked the beginning of more than 50 years of strained relationship with the United States, beginning with Cuba’s introduction of a nationalized planned economy which resulted in the state take-over of foreign businesses and investments which were mostly American, the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961 and the nuclear missile standoff of October 1962, which brought the world to the brink of a nuclear war as the Soviets attempted to set up a nuclear base in Cuba, a few miles away from the United States. <br />       Fidel Castro’s face-off with the United States earned his country economic and military blockades, which proved punitive for his people, the flight of many Cubans to the United States, sustained, vitriolic American propaganda against Fidel and Cuba, as well as assassination attempts. By 1961, America broke off diplomatic relations with Cuba. Fidel proved to be a fiercely single-minded, iron-willed, unbending political figure. He resisted both capitalist restoration and American imperialism. He emerged in the long run as a symbol of defiance and a source of inspiration for many of his compatriots and others who drew patriotic zeal and fire from his resistance, nationalism and patriotism.<br />           Cuba was the centerpiece of his revolutionary and ideological exertions. He wanted the best for his country and his people, and in pursuing a pro-worker, pro-people agenda, he stood firmly against the intimidation of the capitalist mega-power to the North. He turned towards the Soviet Union as trading partner and source of subsidies.  He lowered racial barriers, preached equality and sovereignty and railed endlessly against capitalism in characteristically fiery and long speeches. With the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, the subsidies ended, and the people’s economic hardship increased but Fidel Castro remained stubbornly committed to his agenda and vision. He survived the end of Soviet subsidy with the help of Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela.<br />       He was a very strong, impressive personality, a master of rhetoric, and a notable man of style, with his trademark fatigue, classic Cuban cigar and scraggy beard. He was the oldest and the most enduring of the communists. His example inspired radical politics in Venezuela, Chile, Grenada, Bolivia, Ecuador and other parts of Latin America.  He defined the left in Latin America. He changed the Latin American game.<br />        His impact on the larger international order was no less significant. Many Fidelistas emerged in other parts of the world, including Africa, particularly in Congo, South Africa, Angola, Namibia and Mozambique where he supported revolutionary change morally and materially. The Nigerian Left also owes much inspiration to the politics of Fidel Castro and the ideas of his friend and ally, Ernesto “Che” Guevara.  Cuban doctors served as volunteers in Angola and Namibia, while over 36, 000 troops and another 300, 000 troops took part in the anti-apartheid, liberation struggles in both countries respectively.  Cuban troops were also involved in Algeria, Guinea Bissau, Equitorial Guinea, Sierra Leone and Libya. Africa owes Fidel a debt of gratitude. Comrade Fidel became the hero of many across the world who wanted to stand up for their countries and become like him, champions of the interests of the downtrodden and apostles of the values of equality and sovereignty. He was one of the strongest political, if not moral, voices in the 20th century.  He may have been guilty of human rights abuses at home, for debatable reasons of pragmatism, but he was a champion of social justice on the global stage.<br />       The durability of Castro’s politics and influence was further consolidated by the longevity of his life.  Many young Cubans may remember him as the old man, and probably be less excited by his politics, which they may not understand, but he is bound to remain the most influential figure in Cuban history for a very long time to come. The United States must be relieved that its arch-enemy is finally gone. Fidel Castro stood up to 11 American Presidents from Eisenhower to Obama and did a lot to promote anti-American sentiments in the global sphere. Even when Jimmy Carter (he removed travel restrictions in 1977 and visited in 2002 and 2011) and Barrack Obama (the first sitting American President to visit Cuba in 90 years) sought to extend a hand of friendship, he was unimpressed. <br />       America’s hope that his death will mark the end of his legacy may be too much of an expectation, but definitely Cuba after Fidel Castro will no longer be the same, but the change will be gradual. Castro’s brother and successor, Raul is 85 years old: some day, a Castro will no longer be in charge of Cuba, and the end of that dynasty may well mark the beginning of another transformation. But before that happens, Donald Trump, Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, Newt Gingrich and Ted Cruz should stop gloating: their responses to Fidel’s death are too cheap, vilely opportunistic and indecent!<br />       As it is, many Cubans are no longer afraid that America poses a threat to their country’s sovereignty: the psychological weapon with which Fidel controlled the population for decades. Cuba without Fidel draws closer attention to the gains of the Cuban revolution, as to whether or not it has fulfilled its promises. Raul Castro has made the Cuban economy more open and allowed more opportunities for self-expression, there are plans to restore diplomatic relations with the United States, commercial flights to and fro the United States are now possible, future movements may also be in the form of extension of the scope of human freedom.<br />        Fidel never wished that there would ever be a counter-revolutionary capitalist restoration in Cuba, as happened in Russia and Nicaragua, hence he had declared in April, that “the ideas of Cuban communism will endure.” He is no longer in a position to determine that, but like Jose Marti (1853-1895), before him, Fidel Castro (1926-2016) will forever occupy an important chapter in the history of his fatherland and the world. When his remains are submitted to the furnace of the pyre on December 4, if the dead could speak, Comrade Fidel could well be heard proclaiming afresh: “<em>La historia me absolvera!”. </em>Certainly, it has. He got away with his principled opposition to imperialism and provided leadership when the world needed it most.

The Army has also announced killing scores of Boko Haram fighters in such incidents.<br /> Boko Haram attacks have caused the death of over 20,000 people since the insurgency began in 2009.

Citing unnamed current and former employees, the <em>New York Times</em> report said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has supported the project, but that the tool has not been used and that there is no indication that Facebook has offered the tool to authorities in China. A Facebook spokesperson did not reply to a request for comment in time for publication.<br /> There are already countries such as Russia and Pakistan where Facebook and other large U.S. internet companies remove specific content after it is shared, following government orders. According to Tuesday’s report, this technology is different and can proactively block content from showing up in news feeds to begin with. According to the report, Facebook does not intend to block posts itself, but could make the software available to a third party. Efforts on the project have grown this year, and were at least one point led by Vaughn Smith, a vice president for mobile, corporate and business development at Facebook, according to the report. The software gained internal interest at Facebook and was a topic at one of the company’s weekly Friday afternoon question-and-answer sessions, the report said.<br /> Zuckerberg has been working to build Facebook’s relationship with China over time, making visits to the country, meeting President Xi Jinping and learning Mandarin. Facebook and Chinese officials have had sporadic talks about the social network operating in the country, the report said.<br /> Facebook does have a Hong Kong office, where some employees sells advertising for Chinese businesses. Partnering with a local company or investor could also make it easier for Facebook to operate in the rest of the country. We do not believe so. I live in Lagos; N200m cannot buy you a house in Victoria Island, let alone Lekki or Banana Island. When we make a law like this, we must put something that will make the law to last for at least some time,” Okonoboh said.<br /> “I can tell you (that) in 10 years, N200m will mean nothing. People who want to build a house then would be talking about a billion naira or something like that. So, a law must be made in such a way that, next year, you do not start doing an amendment.<br /> “That is why the budget is there. And it is subject to availability; we didn’t give any time limit. For the people (governor and deputy) who just left their offices, if it is (after) 20 years that the state has the money, that is what the law says.<br /> “So, it is not something that will stretch the state’s resources or anything. So, we want those who do not understand to come so that we can explain to them.”<br /> Asked if they had done the right thing, he said: “What the law knows is that they were on salaries and allowances. If you are imagining other things, they are not known to the law. I want people to know that this is not a person; it is a law.”
