<p dir="ltr">Real Madrid were crowned champions of Europe for the 11th time after defeating Atletico Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout in Milan.<br>
Zinedine Zidane becomes the seventh man to win the European Cup as both a player and a manager.<br>
Cristiano Ronaldo fired home the winning penalty as Real Madrid won Europe’s biggest prize for the 11th time in its history.<br>
Ronaldo held his nerve to beat Jan Oblak from the spot after Real had been held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final.<br>
Juanfran, the Atletico defender, was the unfortunate man to miss his spot kick — striking the post and allowing Ronaldo to fire his team to glory.<br>
It was a dramatic conclusion to a game which only caught light in the later stages.<br>
Sergio Ramos had headed Real in front after 15 minutes before Atletico hit back after the break.<br>
Antoine Griezmann, scorer of 32 goals this season, should have equalized just after the interval but the forward struck the crossbar from the penalty spot after Fernando Torres had been fouled.<br>
That miss failed to dishearten Atletico though and Yannick Carrasco, a second-half substitute, fired home from close range with 11 minutes remaining to level the tie.<br>
The contest moved to penalties and with Real leading 4-3, Juanfran became the first man to fail by hitting the post.<br>
That enabled Ronaldo to step forward and the Real man made no mistake — coolly firing home to win the club’s second title in three seasons.</p>

Nigerian scaling hurdles, pushing boundaries and breaking stereotypes.</strong><br />
Akinwande
 has been identified by President Barack Obama, as one of the recipients
 of “the highest honour bestowed by the US government for science and 
engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent 
research careers”.<br />
Alongside 104 researchers, he will receive the 
Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers in 
Washington DC later in the year.<br />

are leading the way in our efforts to confront and understand challenges
 from climate change to our health and wellness,” <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/02/18/president-obama-honors-extraordinary-early-career-scientists" target="_blank"><strong>Obama said while announcing the winners</strong></a>.<br />

Akinwande
 is an associate professor in electrical and computer engineering and 
the Jack Kilby/Texas instruments endowed faculty fellow in computer 
engineering in the Cockrell school of engineering at the university of 
Texas at Austin.<br />

<strong>EDUCATION</strong></h3>
Akinwande 
graduated from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, bagging
 a double degree (B.S/M.S) in electrical engineering and applied 
physics.<br />
His master’s research in applied physics pioneered the 
design and development of near-field microwave probe tips for 
non-destructive imaging and studies of materials.<br />
He had his PhD 
degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 2009, 
conducting research on the synthesis, device physics, and circuit 
applications of carbon nanotubes and graphene.<br />

<strong>INVENTION</strong></h3>
According
 to Akinwande Nano Research Group, the professor is known for his 
groundbreaking research on nanomaterials, sensors, devices and flexible 
technology.<br />
He is considered one of the top researchers in the 
world in the areas of graphene, silicon electronics and 2-D 
nanomaterials for use in flexible electronics.<br />
In 2015, Akinwande 
created the first transistor out of silicene – the world’s thinnest 
silicon material – and he is continuing to advance the capabilities of 
computer chips and other electronics.<br />

of sexual abuse, calling on parents to communicate regularly with their

Edochie,
 who was a guest at a seminar to end violence against children, told NAN
 that she was violated by a family friend at a young age.<br />
“I was a
 victim of sexual abuse; that was when I was in primary six; I was going
 to the hospital and somebody called me,” she said.<br />
“The boy used 
some diabolic means and sexually violated me; when I could not see my 
period, I refuse to tell my mother, because she was very strict. I love 
sharing my experience because at the end of the day I succeeded; If I 
had not succeeded, I would not have been able to be saying it.”<br />
She explained that the pregnancy was about seven months before her mother noticed it.<br />
Edochie added that her mother was shocked because she thought her being strict would not allow such a thing to happen.<br />
“My
 mother asked how it happened and I told her everything; my brother 
picked a knife and wanted to kill me, but my mother stopped him,” she 
said.<br />
“It happened that the mother of the boy that violated me was
 my mother’s friend; the boy’s mother was surprise but the boy 
denied. My mother took me to hospital to abort the pregnancy with a plan
 of taking me to my grandmother’s place to stay for one week before 
returning home.<br />
“I told her I may lose my life in the process; and
 because she loved me, she aborted the planned abortion. I feel it was 
God that spoke through me. My mother took care of the baby while I went 
to school; if not for my mother, I would not be where I am today.”<br />
The veteran actress called on parents to communicate regularly with their children and make them “their best friends”.<br />

 of African Football, CAF, has slammed a five-year ban on embattled 
Chris Giwa and four four of his disciples thereby confirming and 
extending the same five-year ban placed on them by the Amaju Pinnick- 
led Nigeria Football Federation. The four others affected by the 
continental ban are Muazu Suleyman, Yahaya Adama, Sani Fema and Johnson 
Effiong.</div>

In a letter signed by CAF’s 
Secretary-General, Hicham El Amrani and dated May 27th 2016 and copied 
to NFF’s President Amaju Pinnick, the letter stated that the ban forbids

reading session with young children from private and government schools,

 immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic 
Party, Mr. Olisa Metuh’s lead defence counsel, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu 
(SAN), has said his client has told the Economic and Financial Crimes 
Commission that he is willing to return the N400m he allegedly received 
from the Office of the National Security Adviser in November, 2014.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Metuh is currently being prosecuted by 
the EFCC for allegedly receiving the money, which the prosecution 
alleged was collected from the $2.1bn arms funds allegedly diverted by 
the former NSA’s office to other purposes aside from buying arms to 
fight insurgency.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The money was said to have been released
 to him to launder the alleged bad image of former President Goodluck 
Jonathan a few months to the 2015 presidential election which Jonathan 
eventually lost.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Metuh lost his bid at the FCT High Court to secure his passport to enable him to travel abroad for a check-up.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ikpeazu, in a telephone interview on 
Thursday, said Metuh had always indicated to the EFCC that he was 
willing to return the money right from when the anti-graft agency 
invited him for questioning before charges were filed against him.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The lawyer said he advised Metuh after 
his trial began before a Federal High Court in Abuja to write a letter 
to the EFCC, indicating his intention to return the N400m, which he 
stated the former PDP spokesperson heeded.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He insisted that Metuh initially thought
 the money came from former President Goodluck Jonathan but readily 
indicated to return the money as soon as the EFCC made him to realise 
the money was from the ONSA.</div>

<strong>Yakubu
 Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives, has denied that he 
conspired with a member to “sneak in” a bill that would expand the 
application of Sharia law in Nigeria.</strong><br />
Abdullahi Salame, 
representing Gwadabawa/Illela federal constituency, Sokoto state, had 
promoted a bill which would expand the criminal aspects of the Sharia as
 well as make it applicable nationwide, and not just in the 12 northern 
states that adopted the Islamic legal code.<br />
Dogara, a Christian from Bauchi state, had been accused of allowing the bill to go undebated in “collusion” with Salame.<br />
But
 responding to inquiries on his twitter handle @Speakerdogara Friday 
evening, the speaker said “bills are always gazetted before they are 
scheduled for Second Reading and Gazettes are public documents”.<br />
He
 described as “crass ignorance” of the legislative process for someone 
to insinuate that a Bill could be sneaked in and passed.<br />
He said 
the bill in question only seeks to amend the provision of the 
constitution to make some criminal aspects of Sharia applicable.<br />
The
 speaker explained that being a constitutional amendment Bill, the “Bill
 is not a regular Bill that can be said to have passed second reading, 
passing it only meant it’s in the mill.”<br />
According to him, “all 
such Bills are read and referred to the House Special Ad-Hoc Committee 
on Constitution Review for Legislative fireworks”, and that “only the 
House Special Ad Hoc Committee on Constitutional review can propose a 
final Bill on constitutional review.”<br />
“As it is there no proposed 
Bill from the Ad Hoc committee yet. So the Bill in question is just a 
working document. Those talking about sneaking a bill are either 
ignorant of the process or plainly mischievous.”<br />
“The Special Ad 
Hoc committee is bound to consider it just like all other references to 
the Ad Hoc committee. In real sense it’s only when the said Ad Hoc 
committee  proposes it to the House that we will have the Bill to vote 
on.”<br />
The  Ad Hoc committee is free to recommend or reject it and 
where it rejects it the Bill dies there and as such “it’s no use 
allowing debates on such Bills that are for reference.”<br />
He assured
 that the bill will be thoroughly debated and examined by “our in-house 
experts serving on the Special Ad Hoc Committee.”<br />
“If it passes the Ad Hoc committee, it will now be debated by the House in plenary nd be subjected to 2/3rd vote.”<br />
“In
 any case, recommendations from the public on constitutional amendment 
are accepted by the House without debate,” and advised those concern to 
get  a copy of the bill as it is a public document having been gazetted.<br />

#Pendulum: The Second Coming Of President Buhari (2)

<p dir="ltr">By Dele Momodu </p><p dir="ltr">Fellow Nigerians, I’m back this week to continue where I stopped last week. If you missed the first part, let me summarise quickly. The piece was largely historical as I took the readers on a tour de force of how we arrived at President Muhammadu Buhari, a stone repeatedly rejected but has now become the cornerstone. I concluded that the second coming of President Buhari was a miracle and that the high expectations would naturally place a heavy burden on him.<br></p><p dir="ltr">
Without doubt, life has not been rosy for our dear President and Nigerians in the last one year. What Nigerians expected from Buhari was nothing short of a magical revolution that would transform Nigeria, without military power this time around. The joy that heralded his coming was surreal and uncommon. For once, since June 12, 1993, when Chief Moshood Abiola won the most monumental election since our Independence, Nigerians united in celebrating President Buhari’s superlative victory. Everywhere I went, Nigerians were proud that Buhari had won and world leaders saluted our incredible achievement. In Dubai, where I travelled to shortly after the election, taxi drivers congratulated me once they confirmed that I was from Nigeria. The story was virtually the same in London, a city with probably the second largest concentration of Nigerians outside our dear beloved country. Indeed, we never had it so good.</p><p dir="ltr">
So what seems to have gone wrong and how did we somehow wasted the momentum that was galloping us to prosperity, given where we have now found ourselves? Nigerians expected our President to have spent the transition period to assemble and get his team ready. His economic team was supposed to have been identified and put on notice and standby. We now know that the outgoing Government did not co-operate as fully as it should have done and the President did not have hand over notes on time, according to some impeccable sources.</p><p dir="ltr">
Once the newly elected representatives of the people got inaugurated, one expected that everything would be smooth sailing, as APC had the majority in both chambers of the National Assembly. However, the election of principal officers of the National Assembly which was meant to be a simple and straight-forward affair since the ruling party had a simple majority already in its kitty turned out to be anything but that. No one anticipated the raging inferno that would erupt from contending ambitions and conflicting egos. The Eighth National Assembly has never known peace since inception and the rest would be history by the time the gladiators finish tearing themselves to pieces in the market place.</p><p dir="ltr">
The selection, screening and confirmation of Buhari’s cabinet took place at snail-speed. Nigerians mumbled and grumbled like the Biblical Jeremiah about the time it was taking for the President to pick his men and women. It did not seem the President understood that his people are probably the most impatient human beings on earth. Perhaps, he would have jazzed up the tempo and tenor of his administration by announcing his cabinet long before he eventually did.</p><p dir="ltr">
The steam started cooling down like melting dew and before long the mumbling turned to moaning and grunting. Those of us perceived to be part of the Buhari Movement have not been spared by those who would never see anything good in our President. We’ve been treated scornfully and attacked as those who brought this scourge on Nigeria. All explanations and entreaties have fallen on deaf ears.</p><p dir="ltr">
The situation was further compounded by the war against corruption which has been waged with religious fervour by the Buhari government. The horrendous stories of stealing in high places are stranger than fiction. All well-meaning Nigerians have been scandalised by the gory tales of brigandage and high larceny that we have been subjected to. Most Nigerians are happy and pray that maybe Buhari would be able to win a war that was apparently responsible for the abrupt termination of his military rule in 1985, during his first coming. Many big personalities have been arrested, detained and prosecuted, though only one case has been concluded and most are yet to be brought to judgment and conviction.</p><p dir="ltr">
The Judiciary that should be the last bastion of justice and the ultimate hope of the common man has been on trial and ostensibly nailed to the cross. There have been allegations of bribery and bias. Such an important institution has been weakened miserably and how it would wriggle out and cleanse its self-deprecatory mess remains to be seen. The Buhari government does not seem impressed even though it would need a willing and ready partner in the judiciary in its volatile crusade against corruption.</p><p dir="ltr">
Security remains a huge challenge. Though our irrepressible military appear to be pushing forward in its efforts towards the obliteration of the terror group, Boko Haram, there are still some skirmishes here and there. Kidnapping is back big time. Just days ago, my young cousin, John Fatoye, a fresh graduate was abducted as he boarded a fake taxi and found himself journeying through places that he would never be able to identify since he was blindfolded. He survived by the whiskers as God miraculously touched the hearts of the bandits who dumped him somewhere on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This has become rampant.<br>
We didn’t hear of the Shiites, New Biafrans, Fulani herdsmen and Niger Delta Avengers this time last year. But these groups have managed to force their ways to the front pages of our newspapers and the forefront of our attention and reckoning because of their agitations and restiveness. The Amnesty Programme that was meticulously put in place by former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has virtually collapsed. The Avengers have wreaked unprecedented havoc on our crude oil supplies and operations. It is reckoned that we’ve lost our production capacities by about one million barrels per day at a time we are grappling with abysmally low income from oil.</p><p dir="ltr">
By far the greatest albatross of the Buhari is the comatose economy. Many are wondering what suddenly happened to the robust and rambunctious economy that was celebrated globally less than three years ago. Our economy under the government of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathain was supposed to have overtaken that of South Africa to become the front leader. It has nosedived to an all-time low in just one year. We have studiously ignored the fact that we’ve catapulted ourselves into recession. That oil prices crashed calamitously when President Buhari took over power and the profligacy and impunity of the previous administration became manifest as there was no money to cover up and paper the cracks that had been obvious to the discerning public.</p><p dir="ltr">
The truth is thus that the times have not been kind to this administration. President Jonathan had devalued the Naira twice in the space of six months in the last days of his administration. The effect of that devaluation is only just being felt in the course of this Buhari administration because, in the euphoria of the elections, everyone forgot about the economy. The parallel foreign exchange market took on a mind of its own and defied all permutations as speculators held sway. Prices of food and other essentials have gone haywire. In the end the Central Bank had to capitulate to those clamouring for devaluation by recently announcing a flexible exchange policy. This will naturally mean further economic woes for the long-suffering masses of our great country but we must have faith and believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel.</p><p dir="ltr">
No one is sure if we’ve finally done away with the ubiquitous petrol subsidy or whether there is now deregulation of the petrol pricing regime. Only time will tell. Thank God however that the unbearable queues at petrol stations have disappeared and we pray it is final this time.</p><p dir="ltr">
Unemployment has become dangerously massive. In fact, we are now rated as the country with the largest army of unemployed youths in the world. And the list of our woes is full and unending.</p><p dir="ltr">
The regular excuse for the woeful economic quagmire we have found ourselves is that the past governments created this volcanic eruption. While this is a fact, many have argued that the time for buck-passing is far gone because that is the reason Jonathan was sacked by Nigerians.</p><p dir="ltr">
Where then do we go from here? I shall endeavour to put my humble suggestions forward. I’m aware that some aides might be dissembling to the President and telling him all is well. But Baba, there is fire on the mountain. As one of your foot-soldiers, I remain committed to telling you what the voices on the streets are saying. I will now take the challenges and prospects together, one by one.</p><p dir="ltr">
The priority of every nation is to build a buoyant economy. Truth is that would be difficult under the current climate. There is too much tension in the land, and the uncertainties can only scare away any investor. For example, foreign airlines are jittery and United Airlines only just announced that it was closing its operations in Nigeria. The almighty British Airways is exploring its options. Even Virgin Atlantic is shedding a few flights on our routes. These are not good signs. We must douse the tension urgently.</p><p dir="ltr">
The banks are panicky and rocking although we are all afraid to openly say this for fear of precipitating a grand collapse. This probably accounts for all manner of unsavoury charges that are being levied on unsuspecting customers. The Central Bank must intervene and save the already overburdened populate. The manufacturers are angry. They are being ravaged by epileptic power supply and uncertain currency regulations. Every type of power generation must be explored speedily. Ghana has convinced me that this can be fixed quickly as demonstrated by President John Dramani Mahama. This has made most Nigerians living in Ghana very hopeful that Nigeria would break our electricity jinx one day soon. If Mahama can perform such miracle, we too should work harder.</p><p dir="ltr">
Farmers are being kicked aground as they are overrun either by diseases or murderous herdsmen and their rampaging herds. No one should play politics with lives and livestock. It should not matter that some of the herdsmen are kinsmen of our President. They should be tackled seriously and I’m sure our President would safeguard every Nigerian soul and property. Once the perpetrators know the President is not on their side they will simmer down quickly.</p><p dir="ltr">
The major bright spot is the war against corruption which the Government is largely seen to be winning. I would like to sound a note of caution though. While it is good to fight corruption, it should be done systematically. Otherwise, what we lose might be bigger than what we gain. I learnt from Chief M.K.O Abiola that there are two ways of shouting Yeee. He said “you can shout YEEE and people will run and you can shout YE-YE-YE and people will dance.</p><p dir="ltr">
We can investigate and prosecute corruption without employing gestapo style operations. The President must insist on respect for the rule of law. One must never fight illegality with illegality. We must avoid anything that would suggest that enemies are being hounded. No crime could be worse than apartheid yet Dr Nelson Mandela chose peace over crisis. I recommend that corruption can be fought without making it appear like grandstanding. The looted funds will be recovered when a thorough but fair investigation has been carried out. No Nigerian should be detained on experimental basis at this time and age. We should always embrace dialogue as means to conflict resolution. Great Britain, USA, and other European countries sometimes even negotiate with terrorists. Those asking for blood today will sing a different song and tune when tomorrow comes.</p><p dir="ltr">
We must do everything possible to secure the cooperation of every Nigerian no matter our ethnic, religious and political differences. In this regard, I implore President Buhari to hold steadfast to the notion that nothing should be done to humiliate a man who voluntarily gave up power when he could have opted for bloodshed. I will always admire and appreciate the sacrifice of President Goodluck Jonathan. We should remember that he was the first man from South South to govern Nigeria by divine intervention. He paid dearly for fumbling in power and that is enough punishment. Other leaders who wasted our resources since Independence are roaming around freely. If they cannot be subjected to a similar treatment, then Jonathan should be left to his conscience and should be allowed to enjoy his retirement without harassment. No man is perfect and we should not sow permanent seeds of discord that may eventually ruin our nation. That does not mean looted funds must not be substantially retrieved from all public office holders without fear or favour. Many in all the Political Parties and civil service fall into this category. The pursuit of one man as is now being advocated by some can only be an unwarranted provocation and unnecessary distraction.</p><p dir="ltr">
It is never a sign of weakness to run away from danger and regroup. It is for this reason that I urge that we must not add the Avengers to our political and economic lexicon. I pray it is not too late. President Yar’Adua did the wisest thing when he drew the embittered militants closer. The people of the Niger Delta have every reason to be bitter. Their representative was sacked and not allowed to return to power. Yet the Asari Dokubos, Tompolos and others left quietly without a conflagration and it was indeed a miracle. We must not go and wake up unnecessary trouble. Our pots are full already.</p><p dir="ltr">
Nevertheless, the Avengers have no right or justification for the atrocities and crimes they are committing. All they are doing is contributing not only to the economic woes of the country and even the world but more importantly they are destroying the communities they claim they are helping through environmental degradation and economic deprivation. The President must help these communities, and turn them away from the romantic notions spawned by these militants, by giving them a sense of belonging once again!</p><p dir="ltr">
According to an old British Telecom advert: “It is good to talk…” Our problems are solvable if we embrace dialogue no matter how difficult it seems.</p>

Troops ‘recover sex enhancing drugs’ from Boko Haram

<p dir="ltr">The Nigeria army says it has recovered sex enhancing drugs, household items and weapons from some Boko Haram insurgents.<br>
Sani Usman, army spokesman, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.<br>
He explained that troops ambushed the insurgents while they were trying to cross from Sambisa forest to a community in Borno state.<br>
“Following information of suspected Boko Haram elements crossing point across Maiduguri-Bulabulin-Damboa road, troops of 81 Battalion and 251 Task Force Battalion, both of 25 Task Force Brigade, staged a deliberate ambush against the terrorists logistics elements on motorcycles and bicycles crossing from Sambisa forest to Alagarno general area around Nyaleri yesterday night,” he said.<br>
“During the operation, the troops killed 2 Boko Haram terrorists, wounded several others and recovered some arms, ammunitions and other items.<br>
“Specifically, they recovered 1 AK-47 Assault rifle, with registration number 27875, 1 hand grenade, 4 AK-47 magazines loaded with ammunition, assorted food items, sex enhancing drugs, such as Viagra, foot wears and bathroom slippers. Others include 3 motorcycles, 10 bicycles, tool kits and assorted clothing, 5 rechargeable lamps and 5 litres of Kerosene, as well as military uniforms, amongst other things.<br>
“From all indications, the terrorists attempted to resupply and sell the items to other terrorists hibernating elsewhere after being displaced from parts of Sambisa forest.<br>
“The troops have continued with the clearance and rescue operations while others are maintaining blocking positions.”<br>

Ambode to punish perpetrators of violence against children

<p dir="ltr">Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Friday said that perpetrators of physical, sexual or psychological violence against children would be punished in the state.<br>
Ambode, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, said this at the 2016 International Children’s Day celebration organised by the state Ministry of Education.<br>
The theme for this year’s celebration in Nigeria is: “Protect the rights of the child in the face of violence and insecurity: End child marriage.’’<br>
The governor said that abuse against children such as rape of minors, kidnapping and child trafficking was becoming a norm in the society and<br>
called for concern.<br>
“Findings from Violence Against Children (VAC) survey shows that six of every 10 children under 18-years in Nigeria are being abused, especially by the people they refer to as family members.<br>
“I assure you that we committed to ensuring that anyone who engages in any form of abuse against any child shall be dealt with under the law.<br>
“We are currently demonstrating that in the case of those involved in the kidnap of students in Ikorodu. That criminal act will be brought to justice.<br>
“I have also directed that adequate security be provided around all public and private schools to forestall a recurrence in any part of the state,’’ he said.<br>
Ambode promised that his administration would continue to invest in the education and future of the children in the state.<br>
In his remarks, Mr Adesina Odeyemi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, said that the day was set aside to celebrate childhood and the leaders of tomorrow.<br>
Odeyemi urged stakeholders, parents and childcare givers to protect the rights of children and protect them from all forms of violence and abuses to prepare them for the future.<br>
The highlight of the event held at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, included march past, debate competition, award presentation, dance and drama.<br>
The annual Children’s Day in Nigeria is celebrated every May 27 to honour children.<br>
The Day was created as part of the efforts of the United Nation to protect children from long working hours and dangerous situations in the society.<br>
It was also set aside to give every child the opportunity to acquire formal education.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The bill to increase the powers and jurisdiction of Sharia Law in Nigeria passed second reading at the lower chambers of the national assembly without a debate.<br>
The bill, which is being sponsored Abdullahi Salame, the lawmaker representing Gwadabawa/Illela federal constituency of Sokoto state, was said to have scaled through, “due to its sensitivity”.<br>
Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, deputy chairman of the house committee on media and publicity, made the disclosure, saying it had been discussed at the committee level.<br>
“The bill came up on the floor and was automatically referred to the adhoc committee on constitution review. There was no debate on it either for or against because the house is a democratic representatives chamber of the Nigerian people,” he said.<br>
“Even if five people only have an issue with any section of the constitution, the house will give it a listening ear. The ad hoc committee on constitution review has one member per state and women and other representation.<br>
“The precedence is that it is in this committee that these kind of matters are thrashed out.”<br>
Gbefwi said: “any bill that has potentials to divide the country on religious or tribal lines or to reopen settled constitutional issues will most likely fail in the committee”.<br>
“It should be noted that constitutional review bills are special bills that undergo many stages unlike an ordinary bill.<br>
“These include committee stage, plenary stage for voting by 2/3rd of the House, 2/3rds of all the state houses of assembly before it comes back again to the national assembly for voting again and finally it must receive presidential assent.<br>
“We are still at a very early stage in the process and Nigerians should not worry about bills of these nature as the house has shown over the years to be the protector of Nigerians’ national unity and interest”.<br>
The bill is seeking to amend section 262 and 277 of the 1999 constitution of the country.<br>

<p dir="ltr">Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has told workers in the state that he cannot “sell himself to pay” them, explaining that there had been times when the generators in the government house had to be switched off as a result of lack of funds to purchase diesel.<br>
The government is owing five months salaries, but Fayose has appealed to the workers to exercise patience with his administration.<br>
He said the state only got the sum of N751 million from the federation account in April as against N1.3 billion it got in March.<br>
“I can’t sell myself to pay workers. Even the government house where I live does not have diesel to power generator at times. It is an issue that affects all of us,” he said in a statewide broadcast.<br>
“If workers want to go on strike, I sympathise with them, but we will be here waiting till they come back. I know workers have not been coming to work, but I don’t have the moral right to stop them . But I can only deploy what I receive from the federation account.”<br>
On Tuesday, unions in the state issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government to pay the December deductions amounting to N512million or face industrial action.<br>

<p dir="ltr">Ese Oruru, 14, allegedly abducted by Yunusa Dahiru, gave birth to a girl at Government House Clinic in Yenagoa on Thursday.<br>
Mr Charles Oruru, Ese’s father disclosed in a telephone interview that his granddaughter and daughter were in good health.<br>
“Ese delivered a girl and she and the baby are in good health, I just left the clinic where I went to see them,” Charles said.<br>
Ese was allegedly abducted by Yunusa Dahiru and taken to Kano where she was forcefully married.<br>
Dahiru was on March 8, 2016 charged with abduction, kidnapping, unlawful carnal knowledge and sexual exploitation by the Police.<br>
Dahiru, a.k.a Yellow, who had pleaded not guilty to the charges, was granted bail in the sum of N3 million with two sureties in like sum.</p>

Let’s meet in court, Omisore tells EFCC

<p dir="ltr">Iyiola Omisore, former deputy governor of Osun state, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of blackmail, challenging the anti-graft agency to present evidence of corruption involving him in court.<br>
The commission declared Omisore wanted earlier on Tuesday, saying he has refused to honour its invitation to make clarification on the alleged N700 million which he collected from the office of Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser, between June and November, 2014.<br>
But Omisore denied the allegation, saying the agency was out to tarnish his image.<br>
He said it had become clear that the EFCC had turned into a tool that was being used to harass political opponents of the government in power.<br>
“If the organisation and its leadership think they have any case against me, they should come to court with their facts,” he said in a statement.<br>
“It is now very clear that the EFCC is indeed playing out the script of persecuting and harassing perceived opposition groups in the country.<br>
“I am not aware of any issue relating to a contract sum of N700 million. There was no issue of N700 million anywhere. If they have facts, I challenge them to bring them to court and not resort to blackmail, intimidation and victimisation.<br>
“This act of blackmail and deliberate tarnishing the image of perceived political enemies won’t help the image of the EFCC and it won’t get it result.<br>
“I am appealing to all human rights and civil society organisations to caution EFCC from damaging my reputation further.”<br>
Omisore wondered how the EFCC could declare him wanted after he and the commission were involved in a law suit earlier in the day.<br>
“How can you declare someone you were in court with at 9am today wanted the same day, a few hours afterwards?” he asked.<br>
“We appeared in court with the EFCC asking for the permission of the court for an extension of time in the preliminary objection to a suit filed against me.<br>
“I am appealing to all human rights and civil society organisations to caution EFCC from damaging my reputation further.”<br>

<p dir="ltr">Real Madrid camp is unstable as Cristiano Ronaldo hobbled out of training just four days before the Champions League final amid concerned looks from teammates.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Ronaldo went up for the ball with Madrid’s reserve team keeper Kike Casilla and fell down in a heap. When he didn’t get back to his feet he was attended to by several member of Real Madrid’s medical staff and finally hobbled away from the training pitch with ten minutes left of the session.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The clash did not seem serious but as he walked off, he angrily three down a water bottle and looked less than happy as he headed for the dressing room. The incident came during a full-bloodied 10-a-side training match on a reduced size pitch.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In an earlier clash Alvaro Arbeloa and Danilo clattered into each other. Speaking before the session Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane admitted Ronaldo also sat out a full training match on Saturday but described it as a precaution. Ronaldo had played every minute of every game of Real Madrid’s season until the run-in when a niggle to the back of his right thigh ruled him out of several key games.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Madrid sources say this time the injury is to the front of his left thigh and while not considered serious means his preparations for the game of the season continued to be hampered by setbacks.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The Minister made the disclosure at a news conference to give a scorecard of the achievements of President Buhari’s administration in the last one year.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said that monies stolen from the country were also in the process of being repatriated from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Jersey Island off the coast of the United Kingdom, Lensisteine.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said that the country was also in talks with countries in the gulf to recover stolen money from the country.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Mr Geoffrey Onyeama defended the many trips undertaken by President Muhammad Buhari. According to him, they were in the interest of the nation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">These returns, he said, were some of the benefits of the President’s interaction with the international community since he took over the government in 2015.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He shed light on other areas of success which he attributed to the administration’s openness to working with other countries for the common good of everyone. These achievements include the recent victory against the Boko Haram insurgency.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Minister said that he believes that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has started on a good footing and would ensure that by the end of its tenure, Nigeria is better for it.</p>

<p dir="ltr">A Federal High Court in Lagos has directed the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase to arrest anybody who parades ‘himself or herself’ as the  acting chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) pending the determination of a suit before it.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Justice Ibrahim Buba who gave the order insisted that the order earlier issued by the court must be obeyed.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The  court had earlier  granted an order stopping the convention of the party.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Buba had ruled in a suit FHC/L/CS/613/2016, filed by the acting national chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff; the national secretary, Adewale Oladipo; and national auditor, Fatai Adeyanju, praying the court to abort the convention, pending the determination of the substantive suit.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Joining PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants, the plaintiffs, all national officers of the party, averred that their tenures were yet to elapse, contending that allowing the convention would amount to abridging their mandates.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The Minister for Information and Culture with the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, Monday, said the Federal Government is considering opening a robust dialogue with the Niger-Delta militants on the need to stop militancy in the oil rich region.<br>
The duo who spoke in an interactive session with a coalition of civil societies in Lagos, chaired by Dr. Moses Ilo, founder of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, stressed that nefarious activities of militants is currently sabotaging efforts being made by the government to revamp the nation’s economy. Mohammed while lamenting the situation said there was no other solution to the issues happening in Niger Delta other than engaging them in meaningful dialogue.<br>
According to Kachikwu the government has come to realize that rolling out military tanks against the militants would not solve the problem. “The military barrels cannot stop or solve problem of militancy in the Niger–Delta region. I will have to go back to my brothers, they are our brothers we will go and dialogue with them,” Kachikwu said.<br>
He said the continued audit of the country’s daily fuel consumption resulted in weeding out 10 million liters of fake petroleum products that was daily subsidized by the previous administration. Kachikwu lamented that the fund spent in subsidizing the pretentious consumption daily could have been used by the Federal Government to fix the refineries, roads and other basic amenities across the country which would have helped improve the Nigeria’s economy.<br>

<p dir="ltr">Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed a report that he is on exile in Cote d’Ivoire.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The report, published yesterday by a national newspaper, claimed that Dr. Jonathan had been given asylum in that Francophone country. His associates were alarmed at the report.</p>
<p dir="ltr">But Dr. Jonathan yesterday said it was all false. He said on the phone: “I’m not on exile. I have no cause to go on exile. It is a wicked and malicious report.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“I was Vice President for two years and President for six years. I did everything I could and I served my country very well. This is what they keep saying anytime I’m outside the country. I was in Ecuador; they said I was on exile. This is my second time in Cote d’Ivoire and I’m rounding off my visit.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It is a wicked attempt to link me with the renewed Niger Delta crisis.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Also yesterday, Dr. Jonathan told his former cabinet members that he was not on exile in Cote d’Ivoire.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said he could not have been running away from any problem in the country let alone going on exile.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said although Jonathan had been implicated in all transactions under its investigation, the ex-President was not yet its target.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Federal Government is said to be looking into the rumour.</p>
<p dir="ltr">One of the intelligence agencies is believed to have sent its operatives to Cote d’Ivoire to verify the report.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Suleiman Olanrewaju Abubakar, the ex-President spoke with him and others from Abidjan, following the report.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Abubakar said Jonathan was only in transit in Cote d’Ivoire being his second visit to the West African nation since he left office.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said Jonathan actually spent his Christmas break in Cote d’Ivoire and his visit to “this country is not new”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The ex-minister quoted Jonathan as saying: “I am not on exile, I can never be on exile, I am going to come back to Nigeria.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“I cannot run away from any problem, I am going to face whatever problem that exists in Nigeria.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Abubakar added: “The ex-President assured me and others that he was only in transit in Cote d’Ivoire which he has visited thrice since handing over power to President  Muhammadu Buhari.”</p>

<p dir="ltr">Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday assured Nigerians that the price of petrol, which was recently increased from N86.50 to N145 per litre would soon reduce.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Mr. Osinbajo, who was addressing a cheering crowd of supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, was representing President Muhammadu Buhari during a two-day working visit to Lagos.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Mr Buhari announced on Sunday that he would be represented by Mr Osinbajo.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The presidency explained that Mr Buhari could not make it to Lagos due to scheduling difficulties.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, however said the President would visit the state after Ramadan.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to Mr. Osinbajo, due the liberalisation of the downstream sector, “every Nigerian can now bring petrol and supply as long as they meet the PPMC (Pipeline and Product Marketing Company) regulations.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said that would allow the forces of demand and supply to force the current price of the product downward.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Vice President, who apparently was referring to the hardship in the country caused by hyper-inflation and job losses, appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the Buhari administration as the “country is on the path to progress.”</p>
<p dir="ltr"> “This country is going to be a great nation but there is a lot of readjustment to be done. My President has asked me to assure every Nigerian that we are on the path to progress,” he said.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has been told to apologise and refund the N10 billion from the State coffers which he wasted on last Saturday’s inconclusive National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).</p>

<p dir="ltr">The State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made the demand in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, and issued on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.</p>

<blockquote><p dir="ltr">Rivers APC said: “The well advertised PDP National Convention in Port Harcourt has come and gone with its disastrous outcome. With the party now factionalised into three, the demise of the once greatest political party in Africa is not far from sight. “As much as we sympathise with the endangered party of the torn umbrella, we hereby unreservedly condemn Chief Nyesom Wike for wasting a whopping sum of N10 billion belonging to the good people of Rivers State on this charade, especially in these lean times. This is not only condemnable but also abhorrent and unacceptable to the good people of Rivers State. We therefore request Chief Wike and his cotravellers to account for and return this huge sum to the Rivers State treasury as we cannot continue to fold our hands and watch him mortgage the future of Rivers State through his shocking financial recklessness.”<br>

<p dir="ltr">Rivers APC berated PDP leaders who turned up for the ill-fated convention, saying that they should have known better.</p>
<blockquote><p dir="ltr">“Those PDP leaders who gathered in Port Harcourt to waste the scarce resources of Rivers State are as guilty as their host, Chief Wike. For crying out loud, they should have known that the so called National Convention would be a charade in view of the court order barring any such exercise and with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stating from the very beginning that it would neither participate nor recognise the outcome of the purported convention,” Rivers APC said.<br>

<p dir="ltr">The party sympathized with PDP Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, who was unceremoniously removed in Port Harcourt after being lured with the fake promise that he would be made to contest and win election as the party’s substantive chairman.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The statement, however, wondered how Sheriff despite his wealth of political experience could fall into the hands of treacherous Wike who, together with out-voted former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, destroyed PDP when they ensured that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi and other party pillars were forced out of PDP, thus inadvertently laying the foundation for the party’s loss of power.</p>
<blockquote><p dir="ltr">“We wonder why Sheriff is crying that he was betrayed at Port Harcourt,” Rivers APC said, adding: “If we may ask, does a leopard change its spots? If Wike could betray and ridicule Amaechi, who did everything humanly possible to make him Obio-Akpor Local Government Chairman, his Chief of Staff and nominated him as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, then we wonder why Sheriff or any other PDP leader should trust him not to betray them.”<br>

<p dir="ltr">Desmond Tutu’s daughter has been forced to give up her duties as a priest in South Africa’s Anglican church after she married a woman, she told AFP on Tuesday.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu-van Furth can no longer preside at Holy Communion, weddings, baptisms or funerals after handing in her license because the church does not recognize gay marriage. She said her father, the retired archbishop and celebrated anti-apartheid campaigner, was “sad but not surprised” at the news.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The canon (law) of the South African Church states that marriage is between one man and one woman,” Tutu-van Furth said in an email. “After my marriage… the Bishop of Saldanha Bay was advised that he must revoke my license. I offered to return my license rather than require that he take it from me.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Mpho and Marceline Tutu-van Furth have been on honeymoon on the Indonesian island of Bali after holding a wedding party outside Cape Town earlier this month.</p>

Borno Emirs Return Home Two Years After Fleeing Boko Haram Insurgency

<p dir="ltr">Two out of the five Borno emirs forced to flee their domain by Boko Haram terrorists, have returned to their palaces.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the emirs fled to Maiduguri two years ago when the insurgents took control of their domain in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of the state. The insurgents took control of the area in August 2015 and announced establishment of Caliphate rule, forcing residents including the emirs to flee. The insurgents were however mauled down by the military who took total control of the area and restored normalcy.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The two emirs, Alhaji Muhammadu Askirama of Askira, and Alhaji Ismaila Mamza of Uba, returned to their respective palaces on Tuesday in company of Borno Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mamman Durkuwa.</p>
<p dir="ltr"> </p>
<p dir="ltr">Speaking at a short ceremony at their palaces, the emirs commended the Nigerian military for their gallantry in routing the Boko Haram terrorists. They expressed optimism that terrorism would end soon in the country, going by the successes being recorded by the military. Also speaking,</p>
<p dir="ltr">Also speaking, Durkuwa assured the emirs that the government would undertake projects to restore life back to the area. The deputy governor urged residents to be law abiding and report any sign of security threat to relevant agencies.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Three other emirs yet to return to their domain include the Emir of Bama, Alhaji Kyari El-Kanemi, Emir of Dikwa, Muhammad Ibn Masta, and Chief of Gwoza Alhaji Muhammad Timta. The three are still residing in Maiduguri, the state capital.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai on Monday said 80 percent of the tomato produced in the state had been ravaged by pests and diseases.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Specifically, the governor declared a state of emergency in tomato production in the state, saying all hands must be on deck to combat various pests and diseases ravaging tomato.</p>
<p dir="ltr">A species of moth attacks the leaves of tomato to cause a disease condition called ‘Tuta Absoluta’.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The larva produced by the moth feed voraciously upon tomato plants, causing a yield loss of 100 percent.</p>
<p dir="ltr">El-Rufai said tomato had been destroyed in three local government areas of the state with a loss of N1bn monthly.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The governor spoke through his Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Manzo Maigari.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said some officials of the state ministry of agriculture had been sent to Kenya in order to learn how to combat the menace, adding that over 200 farmers had lost tomato produce to pests and diseases.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said, “I want to say that Governor Nasir el-Rufai has declared a state of emergency in tomato production in the state. This is as a result of the invasion of the crop by a pest botanically known as ‘Tuta Absoluta’.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“In the past one month, 12 LGAs of the state that produce tomato have lost 80 percent of its harvest. In three LGAs, about 200 farmers have lost N1bn worth of their tomato. So you can imagine the magnitude of the loss.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It is so severe that even Dangote, who has established a tomato processing plant in Kano, had to shut down production.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The problem with the disease, which is caused by a moth, is that no amount of spraying will kill the larva of the moth. You spray it, after about three hours, it comes back to life. So, we have sent some of our officials to travel to Kenya and meet our partners. Kenya has a good advantage over us on this issue.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We understand that they use a plant extract to take care of this problem. But we do not have that knowledge yet. We expect them to return very soon with short and medium-term solutions.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">El-Rufai also said that the state would vaccinate seven million livestock in the state to secure both man and animal from infections.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He noted that about 63 per cent of all diseases that infect man were transmitted by animals, adding that that was the reason why his administration was doing all it could to vaccinate cats, dogs, horses and poultry in order to protect man.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said: “About 63 per cent of all diseases that infect man are transmitted by animals. So vaccinating cats, dogs, horses and even poultry, is to protect man.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Not long ago, a professor at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was bitten by a dog and he died of rabies infection. We have received several cases of dog bites because in the past 20 years there has been no vaccination in the state.”</p>

<p dir="ltr"><b>The Nigerian government has pledged to create a healthy environment by ending open defecation in 2019.</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">Amina Mohammed, minister of environment, disclosed this in an interview with NAN in Abuja.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We’ve decided to embark on a couple of campaigns and apart from the sanitation day, we are setting ourselves targets – two targets specifically,” she said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“One will be about ending open defecation in public places by 2019 because I think it is important to know that we don’t have a country that everyone has toilet facilities in their homes talk less of in public places.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“But if we can stop this in public places, we can begin to really deal with the problem.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“And that means providing public toilets; it means a partnership with the private sector; it means a lot of learning and knowledge for sanitation.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Mohammed said there will be a partnership with the minister of water resources and UNICEF.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“That target we set for open defecation we will work hand in hand with states governments and local governments and making sure that the private sector comes in to build these toilets for us and even create jobs,” she said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Jobs with dignity and so, therefore, we have to find ways of doing that in making sure that this is sustainable.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has terminated the appointment of Mr. Abdul Oroh, as the state  Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, with “immediate effect.?”</p>
<p dir="ltr">It was, however, not clear whether the governor’s action was connected with the forthcoming governorship election.</p>
<p dir="ltr">But according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Peter Okhiria, on Monday evening, the commissioner was dropped “in the public interest.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">The governor said that Oroh’s removal was “with immediate effect” and thanked him for his invaluable services to the state.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He also wished him well in his future endeavours.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, Oshiomhole has approved the appointment of Mr. Kerry Emokpare as Commissioner-designate.</p>

Fayose: Why I sacrificed Sheriff for PDP

<p dir="ltr">Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has opened up on why he withdrew support for Ali Modu Sheriff, the immediate past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<br>
Fayose, who was instrumental to the emergence of Sheriff, said the former chairman had to go to forestall disintegration of the party.<br>
Urging Sheriff to accept his removal in good faith, the governor asked him to join others in rebuilding the party and also support the Ahmed Makarfi-led committee, which has been assigned to preside over the affairs of PDP for three months.<br>
“We cannot sacrifice the party for any individual,” Fayose said in a statement signed by his Lere Olayinka, his special assistant on public communications and new media.<br>
“I supported Senator Ali Modu Sheriff in good conscience but when it became obvious that his continuous stay in office as the national chairman will jeopardise the collective interest of the party, I had no option than to support his removal.<br>
“To me, the general interest of the party overrides that of any individual and there is no way I can stand in support of any plan to sacrifice the party for any individual.<br>
“Anyone whose ambition threatens the collective interest of the party should be removed to save the party and that’s exactly what we have done.<br>
“I therefore urge Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to accept the dissolution of the NWC and appointment of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee in good faith and cooperate with other well-meaning members of the party.<br>
“We need to take these hard decisions so as to reposition the party to be able to achieve the much-needed electoral victory in 2019.”<br>

FIFA Sacks Deputy General Secretary, Kattner Over Financial Irregularities

<p dir="ltr">FIFA’s deputy secretary general Markus Kattner has been sacked due to financial irregularities, football’s world governing body announced on Monday.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Kattner, FIFA’s former financial director, was appointed on an interim basis last summer after the previous secretary general Jerome Valcke was suspended from his post. Valcke was subsequently banned from all football-related activity for 12 years after being found guilty of a series of financial offences. A statement read: “FIFA’s Deputy Secretary General Markus Kattner has been dismissed from his position effective immediately.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“FIFA’s internal investigation uncovered breaches of his fiduciary responsibilities in connection with his employment contract. FIFA will not comment further on any of the details, but will continue its co-operation with the relevant authorities.”</p>

Sack fever grips Kogi workers

<p dir="ltr">Tension has gripped workers at state and local levels in Kogi following the release of an interim report of workers’ verification in the state.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The workers fear that no fewer than 10,000 among them might have been sacked by the state government.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It was learnt in Lokoja on Monday that some workers in the local governments who could not find their names on the lists of genuine staff became apprehensive and others protested.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In Lokoja Local Government, where some 400 workers were affected, the workers blocked the main road in the town and disrupted vehicular and human movements for hours.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It took the intervention of a detachment of policemen to disperse them and clear the road of the bonfires they erected on the road.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In Okehi Local Government and Okene Local Government, workers waited for the list to know their fate.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, the state government insists that those protesting the interim report were not genuine workers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The protesters were not civil servants. Some of them who were interrogated by the security agents at the scene of protest could not produce their staff identity cards.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The genuine local government workers that claimed to have been affected by the preliminary report of the screening have been told to channel their problem to the appropriate authority and they have started complying, “ a statement said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The statement was signed by Alhaji Abdulkarim Abdulmalik , Special Adviser to the Governor on Media.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It has been confirmed that the motive behind the demonstration is to cause mayhem in the state.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The screening exercise has yielded results and any right thinking persons in the state can attest to it,” the statement added.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It warned that anybody caught causing problem under any guise would face the full wrath of the law.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, the state President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees ( NULGE), Mr Tom Abutu, has rejected the sack of members of the union.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Abutu said that the screening committee deviated from its term of reference.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said that NULGE and other unions agreed to be art of the screening based assurances from the government that its outcome would not lead to retrenchment of workers.</p>
