The Pentagon on Friday announced that transgender individuals can now serve openly in U.S. armed forces.<br />
U.S. defence chief Ash Carter said this at a press conference in Washington.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Effective immediately, transgender 
Americans may serve openly, and they can no longer be discharged or 
otherwise separated from the military just for being transgender.<br />
“Americans who want to serve and can meet our standards should be 
afforded the opportunity to compete to do so,’’ Carter said, adding that
 the policy will be phased in during a one-year period.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to 2014 study by RAND 
Corporation, about 2,500 people out of roughly 1.3 million U.S. 
active-duty service members and about 1,500 out of 825,000 reserve 
service members are transgender.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He said that the end of the ban on transgender service was the latest step by the Pentagon to be more inclusive.<br />
However, the U.S. military has also ended the ban on gays serving openly and opened all combat jobs to women.</div>

The
 Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday heard that a former Chief of Air 
Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (rtd), charged with laundering 
N21billion, has returned N2.6billion to the Federal Government.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His lawyer Chief Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), 
while arguing Amosu’s bail application after he was arraigned before 
Justice Mohammed Idris, said his client had returned “collossal sums”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Amosu returned N2.6billion to the Federal Government, reporters learnt.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Economic and Financial Crimes 
Commission (EFCC) arraigned him along with a former Chief of Accounts 
and Budgeting at the Nigeria Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Jacob Adigun, 
and a former Director of Finance and Budget, Air Commodore Olugbenga 
Gbadebo.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The companies arraigned with them are 
Delfina Oil and Gas Ltd, Mcallan Oil And Gas Ltd, Hebron Housing and 
Properties Company Ltd, Trapezites BDC, Fonds and Pricey Ltd, Deegee Oil
 and Gas Ltd, Timsegg Investment Ltd and Solomon Health Care Ltd.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
EFCC accused them of converting N21billion from the Nigeria Air Force around March 5, 2014 in Lagos.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They were also accused of concealing 
“proceeds of crime” and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section
 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and 
punishable  under Section 17(a).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Arguing the bail application, Ayorinde 
said his client, who pleaded not guilty, had always been cooperative 
with the prosecution since his arrest in January and would not jump 
bail.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He has remitted colossal sums of money 
to the Federal Government, although not in admittance of guilt, but out 
of cooperation with security agencies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“My application is that bail be granted 
to the first defendant on self-recognisance. Let those terms be liberal.
 He has been reporting to the EFCC, sometimes twice a week. The first 
defendant will make himself available for trial,” the Senior Advocate 
said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Adigun’s lawyer, Mr Norrison Quakers 
(SAN), also urged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms. 
“Incidentally, the second defendant is on administrative bail by the 
commission. He will be available for trial,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gbadebo’s lawyer, Mr A. Etuokwu also 
asked for bail for his client. Prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, did 
not oppose the bail applications, but urged the court to make the terms 
stringent.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Justice Idris granted them bail for N500
 million with two sureties in same like sum. The sureties must be 
property owners within the court’s jurisdiction, he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Title documents of the properties must 
be submitted to the court’s registrar, which must be verified by the 
EFCC. The sureties must also swear to an affidavit of means which must 
be verified by the EFCC, the court ruled.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Justice Idris directed the defendants to submit their travel passport to the court’s Deputy Chief Registrar (DCR).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He ordered Amosu’s and Gbadebo’s remand 
in prison custody. Adigun is to be kept in EFCC custody because of his 
health condition pending when he fulfils his bail terms.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The defendants were accused of using the companies to convert and conceal the money.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Amosu and Adigun were said to have, 
between July 17 and September 16, 2014,  allegedly removed over 
N663.4million from the Nigerian Air Force accounts to buy properties at 
 50-52 Tenterden Grove, London (NW4 1TH) and at 93B Shirehall Park, 
LondonNW4 2QU, United Kingdom.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They were accused of buying 40A, 
Bourdillon, Ikoyi, with N900million, and a property at Sinari Daranijo 
on Victoria Island with N1.5billion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
EFCC said they also bought a property 
named as Cappadol Mall at Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Wuse II Abuja, for 
N750million, as well as a property worth over N1.7billion at Agobogba 
Street, Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos, using the AirForce’s money.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other properties they allegedly bought 
using the Air Force’s funds include one at Salt Lake Street, Maitama, 
Abuja; one at Agadez Street off Aminu Kano Crescent, Abuja; 61A, Lake 
Chad Street, Maitama, Abuja; and one at 1, River Street, Wuse II Abuja 
using alleged stolen funds.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Between last March 6 and April 30, the 
accused allegedly spent N428,139,539.00, allegedly removed from the 
accounts of the Nigerian Air Force to renovate and purchase medical 
equipment for Solomon HealthCare Ltd situate at 24th Adeniyi Jones 
Street, Ikeja Lagos.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Count one reads: “That You, Air Marshal 
Adesola Amosu Nunayon (Rtd), Air Vice Marshal Jacob Bola Adigun, Air 
Commodore Gbadebo Owodunni Olugbenga, Delfina Oil and Gas Ltd, Mcallan 
Oil and Gas Ltd, Hebron Housing and Properties Company Ltd, Trapezites 
Bdc, Fonds and Pricey Ltd,Deegee Oil and Gas Ltd, Timsegg Investment Ltd
 And Solomon Health Care Ltd on or about the 5th day of March, 2014 in 
Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired 
amongst yourselves to commit an offence, to wit: Conversion of the sum 
of N21,467,634,707.43, property of the Nigerian Air Force, which sum was
 derived from stealing, and thereby committed an offence contrary to 
Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 
2012 and punishable  under Section 15(3) of the same Act.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
EFCC said the accused persons converted 
and concealed the sums, which they “reasonably ought to have known forms
 part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: stealing.” They all 
pleaded not guilty.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Justice Idris adjourned till July 8 for trial.</div>

A Nigerian military doctor, identified as Lieutenant Musa Mustapha 
Bature has been sacked by the Nigerian Army court-martial after he was 
found guilty of having sex with his colleague’s wife.<br />

Known for his notorious sex life, 38 year old Lieutenant Bature from 
Kebbi state, reportedly took advantage of one of his colleague's wife 
who came to him for consultation...<br />

 married woman and then had sex with her. He asked her to come to his 
house in the evening to collect an ointment for her ailment and then had

The woman, out of guilt, reported the matter to the barrack's chaplain 
who forwarded her complaint to his superiors. At the Army court-martial 
on Wednesday, June 29th, Bature was found guilty on a two count charge 
of illicit sexual relationship and unprofessional conduct.<br />

He confessed to the crime at the court marshal.  His fate would be 
finally decided by a military council, which statutorily ratifies such 
sentences. Among the punishment prescribed for such offences includes 
jail term and dismissal from service with dishonour.

 Lagos State Government on Friday said that from July 1, 2016, it would 
commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers, 
saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would
 take its full course.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking at a live interview session on 
Television Continental, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said 
that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos 
State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which 
restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Governor, while sympathising with 
the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated 
truck while trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against 
Indiscipline along Maryland Bus stop on Wednesday, regretted that the 
situation led to the destruction of public assets.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It is not in our DNA to allow someone 
to just die by road accident or the way it happened in respect of the 
incident. But beyond the fact that we lost one person while crossing the
 road as a result of evading arrest by KAI officials, I need to tell 
Lagosians that over 49 buses were actually destroyed and it is costing 
us like almost N139m to put those buses back on the road,” he said.</div>

A
 bodyguard, Corporal Hassan Aminu, who was arrested by security agents 
at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday evening, over suspected links 
with Boko Haram  is actually a serving soldier,  Nigerian Army sources 
confirmed to Daily Sun yesterday .<br />
But, the sources, however, said the incident happened two months ago.<br />
Daily Sun gathered that the soldier, Corporal Hassan Aminu, who is a 
twin, ran into troubled waters after security agents on “internal 
security operation” in Kogi State arrested his twin brother.<br />
Other sources added the soldier’s twin brother made a confessional 
statement on the involvement of his brother with the Boko Haram sect 
during interrogation which led to the arrest of the serving soldier. His
 confessional statement was said to have led to a total overhaul of the 
Presidential Villa and verification of security and civilian personnel 
deployed there by the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA), which 
ended last week.<br />
The high profile suspect is being  kept in custody in one of the 
detention facilities where intelligence personnel are still carrying out
 further investigation.<br />
Corporal Aminu is said to be highly connected to Khalid Albarnawi, 
leader of the Ansaru Islamic sect and second in command to Abubakar 
Shekau in the hierarchy of the Boko Haram terrorists group.</div>

Combined with goat meat, ha, something else. And you know goat has a 
strong smell.”</div>

“I hear that even among the robbers 
themselves, who takes what part of the goat meat is a  serious issue. 
That was how one woman eventually found her pot of soup. A big fight 
broke out. And as the goat thieves quarreled over the pot of soup, the 
owner arrived and started screaming,, neighbours joined and everybody 
started screaming and the truth came out. ”</div>

lost his life. He was butchered and set ablaze.”</div>

heard a story recently, about one of these face-me-I-face-you houses in 
Lagos where a pot of soup just as we have been saying disappeared from 
the general kitchen. The woman left the kitchen to attend to her 
suckling baby. Five minutes max. By the time she returned, her soup pot 
had vanished. The landlord had to summon a <em>babalawo,</em> a father of secrets, a <em>dibia,</em> to identify the culprit and the punishment was meant to be open confession or instant death.”</div>

hunger, poverty and a terrible food crisis across Africa, not just

to help the weak. That is when we can have a country and a nation.”</div>

“Food For Thought, indeed. In the end, 
it is all about food, feeding the people, rescuing them from a life of 
danger and criminality or a resort to a menu of mice and grasshoppers, 
or carrying expensive AK-47 guns to steal pots of soup.”</div>

 also dropped the pot. In Ojota, Lagos, a young hawker, pursued by 
LASTMA officials ran into the path of a moving trailer and was crushed, 
his intestines splattered all over the highway and there was pandemonium
 resulting in more deaths and destruction. ”</div>

took the baby from his mother’s room where he was sleeping, to the 
toilet where she chopped-off his penis with a kitchen knife.<br />

"I decided to do that in retaliation to insults (I’ve been receiving) 
from his mother. She has been insulting me. Anytime I 
complained to our husband, he will not take action. That was the major 
reason I used our kitchen knife to cut off his penis."</div>

Muhammad Dauda denied the allegation, adding that Bara'atu never 
reported Basira to him and that as far as he was concerned they were 
living in peace.</div>

"I never heard them quarrelling, I never saw them fighting. My house is 
intact. There was no division. I treated them equally," Dauda insisted, 
adding that he was shocked when he heard what Bara’atu did to his son. "She
 never showed any sign of madness. She is mentally okay."</div>

The baby's mother, Basira, 21, also denied Bara’atu’s allegations. "Ever since she was married 
and came to the house, I took her as my younger sister. That was why I 
allowed her to be close to my son. I didn’t know that she was planning 
to kill my son," she lamented.</div>

Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi who is in charge of the boy at the IBB 
Specialist Hospital, Minna, said his penis has already been damaged and 
shrunken and that there was no way that it can be transplanted to its 
normal position. </div>

The Niger State government promised to take care of Buhari’s medical 
bills. The Director of Niger State Child’s Right Agency, Maryam Kolo, 
said that
 the state government will ensure Buhari 
gets the required medical treatment.</div>

Meanwhile, Niger State police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, said Bara’atu has been 
arraigned before a magistrate’s court and remanded in Minna prison, 
pending the conclusion of investigations.

The 34-year-old’s impending switch to join Jose Mourinho, the new United boss, has been one of the worst kept secrets in football history.<br>
In typically unorthodox fashion, Ibrahimovic chose to confirm the move on his Instagram and Twitter page on Thursday — a day earlier than expected.<br>
United are taken aback by Zlatan’s bombshell, as he has not signed any paperwork or passed medical tests, but they are very happy with the player’s announcement, Sportsmail is reporting.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The former Sweden skipper will become Mourinho’s second signing and is expected to pen a one-year deal, with the option for a further 12 months.<br>
A verbal agreement has been reached between both parties, with no other clubs involved, and the deal is expected to be signed this weekend.<br>
Ibrahimovic is out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain after June 30, and has long been expected to sign at Old Trafford.<br>
Ibrahimovic will have his medical at Carrington on Friday ahead of signing up with the Red Devils.<br>

Metuh: I’ll return N400m to show support for Buhari’s anti-corruption war

<p dir="ltr">Olisa Metuh, former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says he is ready to return the “contentious” N400m as a sign of support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war.<br>
Metuh said this in a statement by his lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), on Thursday.<br>
The former PDP spokesman is facing trial at the federal high court, Abuja for allegedly receiving N400m — being money for arms purchase — from Sambo Dasuki, former national security adviser (NSA).<br>
He had said that the money was given to him by former President Goodluck Jonathan for media campaigns ahead of the 2015 presidential election, but on Thursday, he said he was willing to return the money as an honest citizen.<br>
“In the light of the circumstances regarding the case of our client, Chief Olisa Metuh with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), we want to explain the reasons for our client’s proposal to refund the N400 million released to him by former President Goodluck Jonathan, and which was expended on a project approved by the ex-president on national issues relating to his presidency and the federal government at that time,” the statement read.<br>
“We want to restate that at the time the money was released to him after his presentation to the ex-president, our client had no knowledge of the source, a fact that is now obvious from the evidence of the prosecution and defence witnesses. Our client had every cause to believe that the money was from the ex-president to whom he made presentation, received directives and rendered report and accounts accordingly.<br>
“When the matter first came up and Chief Metuh was invited to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in December 2015, he requested to know the source of the money and expressed his readiness to make refunds if it was from government coffers, not minding that the money had been expended as directed by the former President. Officials at ONSA never got back to him as they promised, until his arrest by the EFCC in January 2016.<br>
“It was however while in court that a document was brought regarding the source of the money and since then, our client has made manifest his willingness to refund the money and has indeed approached his family, friends and associates to mobilise funds to refund the entire N400 million to the government regardless of the fact that the money had been expended based on the directives of the former president and that part of the money had been recovered from one of the prosecution witnesses.”<br>
Metuh said that had been in “talks with the ministry of justice, the EFCC and other necessary bodies on how to refund the money and resolve the issue”.<br>
“Our client occupied no government office. His commitment and dedication to his official duties have been confirmed by even prosecution witnesses. In this whole saga, he has been an unfortunate victim of circumstances. His refunding the money therefore goes to show his support for the anti-corruption war as well as serve as a testament to his sincerity, integrity and honesty in this matter,” read the statement.<br>
“There is no doubt that the prosecution has considerably embarked on some expenses in the course of this case. It is hoped that by not discounting the sum already recovered, whatever cost so far incurred would have been defrayed. By this, a critical objective of recovery of funds would no doubt be achieved.<br>
“It is pertinent to restate our client’s continued support for the anti-corruption campaign, which is necessary to ensure probity in the affairs of Nigeria to the extent that it is conducted within the rule of law.”<br>

Counsel to embattled Immediate Past Chief of Air Staff, Adesola Amosu,

that Amosu has returned a colossal sum from the N21 billion he allegedly

is put at N2.6 billion.  Amosu's counsel made this known while arguing

Olusegun Hakeem-Adebumiti: Redefining Mo Ibrahim’s Prize For African Leaders.

The
 Mo Ibrahim’s prize for achievement in African leadership was announced 
few weeks ago and for the umpteenth time there was no clear cut winner 
for the coveted prize among past African leaders.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12164" style="text-align: justify;">
After
 reading the news, I remembered a discussion with a colleague at work 
recently on the personality of Mo himself and how best he could channel 
his God-given wealth to develop his home of descent – Sudan.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12165" style="text-align: justify;">
My
 colleague had argued that instead of Mo investing so much as high as 5 
million dollars on African leaders, it would not be out of place if he 
directly spend or invest it in Sudan or some countries battling with 
economic challenges within the continent.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12166" style="text-align: justify;">
Since
 I was a novice about what he is saying I had to keep quiet but was 
quick to marshal out my point as well and told him I have heard so much 
about him and that he was at the anti-corruption conference held in 
London of recent alongside Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari among 
others.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12167" style="text-align: justify;">
So, who is Mo Ibrahim?</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12168" style="text-align: justify;">
After
 the announcement that there was no winner in this year’s edition of the
 award, I was further challenged to do some googling about his 
personality and his rationale for setting up the African Leadership 
Achievement Prize.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12169" style="text-align: justify;">
There
 I found out that Mo is a Sudanese-British Billionaire with investment 
majorly in telecommunication and one of the most powerful persons in the
 United Kingdom.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12170" style="text-align: justify;">
The
 foundation he set up has been in the fore-front of sponsoring the 
African Leadership Prize which is geared towards celebrating leaders 
from the continent who had contributed immensely to the growth of their 
country.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12171" style="text-align: justify;">
From
 my research, one of the objectives of the prize is to ensure that 
Africa continues to benefit from the experience and expertise of 
exceptional leaders when they leave national office, by enabling them to
 continue in other public roles on the continent.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">
Aside the 5 million dollars 
prize, it is expected that such Leader will earn 200,000 dollars monthly
 for the rest of his or her life.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">
That’s breathtaking you will 
say? Well, it was borne out of the free will of the donor which aims at 
encouraging African Leaders to invest vigorously in the countries they 
govern while also ensuring that such legacies are sustainable.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">
That the monetary value of the
 Ibrahim’s Prize is higher than the coveted Nobel Prize for Peace is 
also an indication that Mo meant well for Leaders from his continent of 
origin.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12186" style="text-align: justify;">
Since
 the Prize commenced in 2007, it has been won by four African Leaders, 
the last being former President of Namibia, Mr Hifikepunye Pohamba, .</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12185" style="text-align: justify;">
In
 2007, President Joaquim Chissano from Mozambique won the inaugural 
Prize while South African Leader, Nelson Mandela was an honorary awardee
 for that year. The award was not given to any Leader in 2009, 2010, 
2012, 2013 and of late, 2015.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12184" style="text-align: justify;">
Will it elude past African leaders in 2016 as well? Only time will tell.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12183" style="text-align: justify;">
So
 what’s my concern about someone’s else intention to reward African 
leaders for their achievements? The answer is not farfetched.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12182" style="text-align: justify;">
Most
 of these leaders are rich already while some of them will get life 
pensions and allowances after leaving the office. Why I am not saying 
leaders who have contributed immensely to the development of their 
countries should not be celebrated, what the sponsors of the Ibrahim’s 
Prize need to do is to look at sectors in which such huge amount of 
money can be invested.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12181" style="text-align: justify;">
Sectors
 like Science and Technology, Universal Health Coverage, Water Supply, 
Electricity, Education, Agriculture and Research among others can be 
prioritized, thus taking the continent out of the quagmire facing it in 
terms of funding these sectors.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">
Some specialized higher 
institutions on the continent have been established for the purpose of 
research in Medicine, Agriculture and Science and Technology. Such 
institutions are lacking adequate funds and they need grants to further 
consolidate on the mandate of establishing them.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12180" style="text-align: justify;">
Mo
 Ibrahim need to review his mandate on the 5 million dollars African 
Leadership Prize by channeling it to the development of countries and 
institutions on the continent rather than her leaders.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12178" style="text-align: justify;">
Africa
 need more philanthropists like the Sudanese-British billionaire at the 
moment in order to take her rightful place among the comity of nations.</div>
<div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1467273164489_12177" style="text-align: justify;">
Ours
 is a continent that is rich with abundant resources and talents which 
will take up the world in the near future. Suffice it to say that most 
innovations and inventions we see in America and the West today were 
developed by African brains.</div>
