‘Blasphemy': Killers of 74-year-old woman won’t go unpunished, says Buhari

<p dir="ltr">President Muhammadu Buhari has described as sad and regrettable the developments that led to the killing of Bridget Agbahime, a market woman in Kano state.<br>
Agbahime was killed on Thursday by a mob after she was accused of blasphemy.<br>
Reacting through Femi Adesina, his spokesman, Buhari said justice would be done in the matter, and urged the people not to take the law into their hands.<br>
He condoled with the husband of the deceased, praying that God would give them the fortitude to bear the loss.<br>
He also commended law enforcement agents for apprehending the prime suspect behind the killing, as well as the Kano state government, which summoned a meeting of Christian and Islamic leaders, widower of the deceased, and security agencies, as soon as the sad event occurred.<br>
“Those who might want to use the development to fan the embers of religious or ethnic hatred should remember that two wrongs would never make a right,” Buhari said in a statement.<br>
“When law and order breaks down, those who become victims are never distinguished on the basis of religion or ethnicity.<br>
“The incident at Kofar Wambai market, Kano city, is utterly condemnable, and the state government has been quite proactive. Let us ensure that we keep the peace, as justice will be done. Let us learn to respect each other’s faith, so that we can know each other and live together in peace.”</p>

<p dir="ltr"><b>The defence headquarters (DHQ) says Boko Harm is plotting to carry out large scale bombings during Ramadan.</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">This year’s Ramadan will commence next week.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In a statement on Saturday, Rabe Abubakar, spokesman of the DHQ, advised citizens to be vigilant and to report suspicious persons or objects to security agencies.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Information available to this headquarters indicated plans by terrorists to use the Ramadan periods which usually attracts gathering of large number of persons during morning and evening worships and prayers to carryout large scale bombings,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Against this background, the defence headquarters (DHQ) wishes to once again advice the general public to be watchful of strange persons and objects in their localities particularly, around places of worships and to promptly report same to security agencies.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It is further to advice that adequate security and surveillance be evolved by respective places of worship to forestall any unwholesome acts by some unscrupulous elements.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The DHQ wishes to reassure law abiding citizens to go about their normal businesses while efforts are being made to eliminate the remnants of the terrorists from their hideouts as well as addressing other security challenges in the country.”</p>

Troops kill top Boko Haram commander, 18 others in Borno-Army

<p dir="ltr">The Nigerian Army said that its troops in Borno on Friday killed a top Boko Haram commander known as Ameer Abubakar Gana and 18 other fighters.</p>
<p dir="ltr">A statement issued on Saturday by army spokesman, Col. Sani Usman said several arms, ammunition, vehicles and other items were recovered during the operation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Usman said in the statement that the commander and his men were killed during a clearance operation on the terrorists’ stronghold at Chukungudu by troops from various army battalions with support from Air Force aerial surveillance.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Usman said the operation was conducted following intelligence report about the activities of the insurgents in the area.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Following credible information on the presence of Boko Haram terrorists at Chukungudu, a carefully planned operation comprising troops of 22 Brigade Garrison and 153 Task Force Battalion as well as Nigerian Air Force Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaisance, was conducted.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“While advancing to the location, the troops encountered Boko Haram terrorists’ ambush position at Muskari, Gilam and Hausasi.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“During the encounter at the camp, the troops killed 19 Boko Haram terrorists including their notorious leader, Ameer Abubakar Gana.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“They also destroyed the terrorists’ Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) making factory and detonated four primed IEDs at the factory’’, the statement quoted Usman as saying.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It said the troops recovered two anti-aircraft guns, one AK-47 rifle and a magazine, a pistol, one rocket propelled grenade, 267 rounds of 7.62mm NATO metal link ammunition and 23 rounds of 12.7mm belt ammunition.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It added that the troops also recovered a Canter truck, one gun truck, one Land Rover vehicle and a Toyota (Hilux) pick up.</p>
<p dir="ltr">It said two soldiers who sustained gunshot injuries during the operation were in stable condition and responding to treatment.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Fellow boxers Mike Tyson and George Foreman were among those who led to tributes to legendary boxer Muhammad Ali today as news broke of his death at the age of 74.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The sportsman died with his family at his side after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease late on Friday evening, a day after he was rushed to hospital with difficulty breathing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Known to many as The Greatest, Ali’s popularity transcended the sporting world, and he was as famous for his work as a humanitarian and freedom fighter, whose strong beliefs never wavered as he was for his success in the ring.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Tyson was among the first of a host of famous names and friends of Ali to pay tribute to him, taking to Twitter to post a photograph of the pair together during the 1990s.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He wrote: ‘God came for his champion. So long great one.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">George Foreman, 67, who took on Ali in one of his most famous fights, the Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1974, said his former rival was ‘something special’.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘Muhammad Ali made you love him,’ Foreman told BBC Five Live. ‘If you dislike him you wanted more than anything to see him again so you could dislike him again.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘Beauty is how you would describe him. Muhammad Ali was what I call beautiful.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The fight in Kinshasa was expected to be Ali’s final foray into the ring. To the astonishment of those watching, Ali adopted a ‘rope-a-dope’ strategy and sapped the unbeaten Foreman’s strength.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Ali then pounced in the eighth round, putting Foreman on the canvas and the fight was stopped by the referee, with Ali regaining the world heavyweight title.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘Little did I know I would be facing something greater than a boxer,’ said Foreman when asked to remember that night in Africa.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘He stood the test. He took everything I had and gave back worse. I loved the man. I wanted to beat him and knock him out but I loved the man.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘He called me Frankenstein’s monster. He was only saying that because it was true. I was a monster, I was a monster.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">When asked about Ali’s fight with Parkinson’s disease, Foreman said more research had to be done to find a cure.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘Muhammad Ali fought the best he could,’ he added.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Following the news of his death Don King, who promoted some of Ali’s biggest fights, told The Associated Press early Saturday: ‘It’s a sad day for life, man. I loved Muhammad Ali, he was my friend. Ali will never die. Like Martin Luther King his spirit will live on, he stood for the world.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">He later told CNN: ‘He’s always been right there, Johnny on the spot, anything he could do for the benefit of mankind.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘Let us celebrate his life. This is not a time to mourn. This is a time to try to emanate the job he was doing and the burden he leaves behind for us to carry on, to remember that the people are the most important.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">Former British heavweight champion, Frank Bruno said on Twitter: ‘Inspiration, Mentor, my Friend, an Earthly God of humanity, Simply.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">Boxing promoter Kellie Maloney told the BBC that Ali was an ‘icon’.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘He took boxing from the back pages, he made it a national sport,’ she said. ‘He made it well known to the world.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">She told BBC 5 Live: ‘You either loved him or hated him, but what you did was respect him.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘He transcended boxing, took it to a new level. He was the first real superstar, not just in boxing but in sport.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘If you asked my daughters who the favourite sportsman in the world is, they’d say Muhammad Ali. He didn’t just win battles in the ring, he won battles outside of the ring.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">Maloney met Ali while at a function with her former fighter, Lennox Lewis, and added: ‘He could hold a room. Even when he wasn’t well, people were in awe of him.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">Current promoter Eddie Hearn, who looks after current world champion Anthony Joshua, said: ‘Waking to the sad news that “The Greatest” has passed. Rest in peace Muhammad Ali you shook up the World.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">And promoter Bob Arum said: ‘He was the greatest fighter of all time but his boxing career is secondary to his contribution to the world.</p>
<p dir="ltr">‘He’s the most transforming figure of my time certainly. He did more to change race relations and the views of people than even Martin Luther King.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, hundreds have taken to social media to celebrate his considerable impact on the world and the #GOAT, meaning Greatest of All Time, was trending on Twitter and tributes flooded in from outside the world of boxing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Lionel Richie tweeted: ‘You will always be my hero’, accompanied by a touching photo of them together.</p>

<p dir="ltr">While Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump quickly tweeted: ‘Muhammad Ali is dead at 74! A truly great champion and a wonderful guy. He will be missed by all!’</p>
<p dir="ltr">A practicing Muslim, Ali had indirectly criticized Trump following his remarks that all Muslims should be banned from entering the United States.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Speaking in December, Ali said all Muslims ‘have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda’.</p>
<p dir="ltr">His statement was directed at ‘presidential candidates proposing to ban Muslim immigration to the United States.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">American television and radio host Larry King said he ‘mourned the passing of Muhammad Ali’ and added ‘he was indeed ‘The Greatest’. An American legend and a true champion for the world.’</p>
<p dir="ltr">While comedian Eddie Griffin tweeted: ‘Rest in peace to God’s champion, simply the greatest of all time!!!!’</p>
<p dir="ltr">Revered by millions worldwide and reviled by millions more, Ali stood tall, 6 feet 3 and 210 pounds in his prime.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He will be remembered for his stunning victories against the likes of Sonny Lister, as well as George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle and Joe Frazier in the Thrilla in Manila.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Ali’s health last took a turn for the worse in early 2015, when he was treated for a severe urinary tract infection initially diagnosed a month earlier as pneumonia.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The boxer looked increasingly frail during public appearances over the past few years, including his last outing in April.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He wore sunglasses and was seen hunched over at the annual Celebrity Fight Night dinner in Phoenix, which raises funds for the treatment of Parkinson’s.</p>
<p dir="ltr">His final public appearance prior to that was in October of last year when he appeared at the Sports Illustrated Tribute to Muhammad Ali at The Muhammad Ali Center in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Ali’s family said his funeral would be held in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, and thanked the public for their outpouring of support.</p>
<p dir="ltr">His daughter, Laila Ali, shared a touching photo on social media as she thanked fans.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The 38-year-old, herself a former boxer, posted on her official Facebook page: ‘I love this photo of my father and my daughter Sydney when she was a baby!</p>

Fellow Nigerians, please permit me to take you on a trip to Ghana today.
 I’m sure a lot of my readers have been to that beautiful country at one
 time or the other. My romance with Ghana started about 21 years ago, 
July 25, 1995, to be precise. On that fateful day, I had managed to 
escape from my dear beloved country Nigeria days after my wife was 
tipped off about my impending arrest by the dreaded dictatorial regime 
of General Sani Abacha. That moment would forever remain one of my worst
 days on earth.<br />
I never planned to live outside Nigeria. I used to wonder, myopically 
with hindsight, why anyone would abscond from his own country to become a
 refugee in another man’s country where he would probably have to 
operate like a tramp, advertently or inadvertently. But man proposes and
 God disposes. Unknown to me, what was supposed to be a simple election 
on June 12 1993 was going to dislocate and scatter many lives to the 
winds and throw families into total commotion and frustration. I have 
told part of this story and the rest has to another story for some other
 day.<br />
I had virtually crawled out of Nigeria through the notorious Seme border
 into Cotonou, in Benin Republic. I was too scared and agitated to stay 
next door to Nigeria. I therefore needed to dialogue with my feet and 
run as far and as fast as possible to far-flung territories. I decided 
to move from Cotonou to Lome, in Togo. But I could not imagine living in
 Togo. French is the lingual franca of Togo and this I failed to learn 
in school. I wasn’t prepared to undergo the ordeal of a deaf and dumb 
existence. Ghana became my only option since Nigeria, for some 
inexplicable reasons known only to our Colonial Emperors, is totally 
surrounded and suffocated by French-speaking countries.<br />
I arrived in Ghana late evening after navigating and meandering through a
 labyrinth of frustrating Immigration procedures and elaborate security 
conundrums. I could not understand why it was so difficult for Africans 
to travel through other African countries. I queried the essence and 
relevance of ECOWAS if West African citizens were being subjected to 
such indignities. Benin Republic was particularly hostile to us despite 
being our next door neighbours. Togo was bearable. But Ghana was 
welcoming. The drive from Aflao border to Accra was tolerable. My 
glimpse of Accra was remarkable. I saw a serious country at work despite
 many complaints about the jackboot regime of President Jerry John 
Rawlings at that time.<br />
Rawlings was a big brand in Africa. Everyone had heard of his 
no-nonsense character and about the death verdict he pronounced on 
members of the privilegentsia in Ghana. He had killed many leaders 
including former Presidents and Heads of State who were believed to have
 looted and siphoned the Ghanaian treasury. He had zero tolerance for 
corruption and became synonymous with integrity and Nigerians to this 
day adore him for this reason.<br />
I was happy to be in Ghana. My first task was to locate a few Ghanaian 
friends, especially Mr Fritz Baffour, now a Member of Parliament and 
former Information Minister. Once I located him, the rest was simple. 
Our reunification was great. He took me on tour of Accra and we met 
every evening for dinner and/or drinks. His support lessoned the pain 
buried and carried within me. After spending three nights, it was time 
to move to England. I will never forget the contributions of my 
wonderful friends who made that arduous journey a lot easier for me. As I
 boarded my direct flight to London Gatwick, I wondered if and when I 
would ever return to this beautiful country. It was a case of love at 
first sight for me. I had savoured the simple elegance of Ghana and the 
hospitality of its people and I was converted.<br />
Anyway, I took off that night of June 28, 1995, and landed on July 29, 
1995, in London, with mixed feelings. Unknown to me, I was going to live
 in exile for a minimum of three years, whether I liked it or not. By 
the time exile ended for me after the sudden and controversial death of 
Chief Moshood Abiola on July 7, 1998, I still wasn’t sure it was safe to
 travel to Nigeria. This was how I became a regular visitor to Ghana. 
The Abiola family had a business in Accra that was being managed by a 
young gentleman, Dele Gbajumo, and he, in particular, escalated my 
interest in Ghana. One thing led to another and I decided to expand our 
media operations to Ghana. This materialised when we launched Ovation 
International at the beautiful La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.<br />
Before our coming to work in Ghana, Nigerians had been viewed with 
incredible suspicion so we decided to expose the good sides of Nigeria 
to Ghana and that of Ghana to Nigeria. On the part of Nigeria, we 
celebrated the Mike Adenugas, Aliko Dangotes, Hakeem Belo-Osagies, Tony 
Elumelus and others who were doing Nigeria and Africa proud. Ghana had 
its own Asoma Bandas, Joe Boatengs, Ozwald Boatengs, Kofi Ansas and 
company. Ovation acted as the quintessential matchmaker. We interviewed 
President John Agyekum Kufuor barely five days after becoming the 
President and he remained our close friend throughout the two terms he 
served and afterwards.<br />
Many Nigerian businesses came into Ghana. Tony Elumelu was the first to 
break the barrier earlier erected against Nigerians when he got the 
Standard Trust Bank to be licensed. Others soon followed. Ghana has 
advanced a lot since then. Government after government came to accept 
and embrace Nigerians despite occasional skirmishes here and there. With
 the collapse of education in Nigeria, our students started flocking 
into Ghana in droves thus contributing billions of Naira into the 
Ghanaian economy. It is believed that many Nigerian families had 
migrated to Ghana many decades ago but the population of Nigerians has 
since soared. A source puts the population of Nigerians in Ghana to as 
huge as two million, making it one of the largest groups of Nigerians 
outside Nigeria.<br />
The good news is that since the coming of President John Dramani Mahama,
 the usual tension occasioned by the attempted annihilation of Nigerian 
businesses has abated. President Mahama has related warmly with Nigeria 
and Nigerians. Unknown to many, the President has his roots in Nigeria, 
including blood relations. Today, Ghana is benefitting from the daily 
arrival of Nigerian tourists on her soil. Most Nigerians go back home to
 rhapsodise about the awesome beauty and serenity of Ghana. And we 
certainly have a lot to learn from this much smaller country with even 
more limited resources.<br />
The first lesson starts from the airport where a beautiful ambience 
welcomes the visitor in the typical akwaaba tradition. President 
Mahama’s government has invested heavily in the aviation sector. The 
Kotoka International Airport may be smaller than our two flagship 
airports, Murtala Mohammed International, Ikeja and Nnamdi Azikwe 
International, Abuja, but it can hold its own as one of the most 
beautiful and functional in Africa. The health screening gadgets are 
world class. Not for Ghana, the unbearable queues one experiences at 
Nigerian airports due to almost manual screening of passengers. The 
Immigration cards, as insignificant as it seems, speak volumes about the
 finesse attached to tourism here. About 25 beautiful Immigration 
counters have been erected with iris cameras and finger-printing 
facilities. This makes it almost impossible for illegal immigrants and 
criminals to pass through that airport. There is no need for the 
equivalent of DSS or other State Security apparatus to screen incoming 
or departing passengers.<br />
It is remarkable and commendable to note that Ghana has now gone further
 and installed automated machines to screen and admit visitors to Ghana 
like it is in some airports in Europe, USA and The United Arab Emirates.
 This should make clearing immigration faster once it is commissioned. 
Brand new conveyor-belts have been installed. Same goes for escalators 
and elevators, two important facilities we lack in Nigerian airports. 
The new customs desk is beautiful. Trolleys are provided massively and 
totally free of charge. Outside the airport, there is a covered waiting 
area where those awaiting their families and friends can sit 
comfortably. As at the last count, there are as many as eight car parks 
scattered around and close-by.<br />
The airport city conceived many years ago has become a virtual reality 
with many tall buildings, hotels, shopping malls, etc, standing in grand
 majesty. It is my hope and expectation that the Minister of Transport, 
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator
 Hadi Abubakar Sirika, will change the face of our aviation industry for
 the better in the not too distant future. My intimate association with 
these two capable gentlemen convinces me that we will begin to see 
positive change shortly.<br />
President Mahama has invested wisely in enduring infrastructure. Road 
construction is going on nationwide. Accra is wearing a new look with 
fly-overs and bridges littering many parts. The most ambitious 
construction I have seen in any part of Africa is in Kwame Nkramah 
Circle. When completed, it would definitely be a wonder to behold and 
certainly a tourist attraction.<br />
Education and healthcare have been given top priority, the reason many 
Nigerians now flock to Ghana. It is gratifying to note that Ghana has 
joined the comity of oil-producing nations and its affairs are 
well-managed. It has a working refinery and Nigeria brings its crude 
here for refining. Unlike in the past when Ghana depended totally on oil
 supplies from Nigerian companies, many Nigerian companies have been 
coming here to negotiate how they can buy refined products from Ghana. I
 know Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum and
 the President are working arduously to deliver on the change agenda in 
the petroleum sector despite the huge challenges that they are facing in
 the short term. Dr Kachikwu is a consummate professional who simply 
gets the job done.<br />
Mahama is pursuing industrialisation of Ghana most aggressively. He has 
just launched the Komenda Sugar Factory which will produce 1,250 tonnes 
of sugar per day. It will produce ethanol and generate 3 megawatts of 
electricity as well as produce fertilizers for Ghanaian farmers.<br />
My biggest fascination for President Mahama is the way he has tackled 
the problem of power outages in a blistering fashion. About two years 
ago, Ghana suffered unprecedented power failure and his government was 
heavily criticised by a very politically-conscious nation. President 
Mahama promised to restore electricity at the speed of light. Many 
cynics and doubting Thomases told him to perish the fantasy. But, before
 our very eyes, Mahama has achieved the near-impossible and electricity 
has improved drastically. He has assured his country that he would not 
relent until Ghana is able to generate more power than it requires. 
Ghana has taught us that fixing power challenges is not rocket-science 
after-all and not even funding should stall the projects. By dint of 
hard work, clear-headed vision and raw determination Ghana is regaining 
its energy and things can only get better. In this regard, I must 
confess that President Buhari could not have appointed a better person 
to deliver on his promise of improving the power situation in Nigeria 
than Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN.<br />
The beauty of Mahama’s accomplishments is his humility. He makes no 
noise and just performs quietly. His critics continue to call him a 
non-performer despite the obvious work he is doing but he remains 
focused and determined to excel despite lack of access to mega resources
 like Nigeria. He has been accused of running a corrupt government but 
has defended himself fiercely by elaborating on efforts made by him to 
curb corruption and punish erring public officers. As part of ensuring 
that government runs transparently, he is working on electronic payment 
platforms for transactions. He has sacked and prosecuted even some close
 allies. He says he is fighting the war against corruption without fear 
or favour and certainly without heating up the polity. President 
Buhari’s commendable fight against corruption is along the same lines 
although there is a need for the executive to be seen as impartial in 
its pursuit of those who have looted and stolen our country blind.<br />
Ghana is not perfect. It has its own challenges like every other nation.
 The beauty of Ghana is the firm entrenchment of Democracy. Ghanaians 
enjoy free expression and keep the leaders on their toes. The cool 
composure of Mahama helps to diffuse crisis when it occurs and for this 
Ghana is richly blessed. Other African countries would do well to study 
Ghana, learn a few useful lessons and emulate the leadership in critical
 areas.

<p dir="ltr">Donald Trump, US presidential candidate, says Hillary Clinton, his likely opponent, should be imprisoned for using a private email server during her term as secretary of state.<br>
Clinton occupied the position during the first term of President Barrack Obama.<br>
“I will say this, Hillary Clinton has got to go to jail,” Trump said at a campaign stop in San Jose, California.<br>
“Folks, honestly, she’s guilty as hell,” Trump added, saying if he is elected president he will direct his attorney general to investigate Clinton over her use of the private server.<br>
Earlier Thursday, Clinton gave a foreign policy speech in which she said Trump was “temperamentally unfit” to be president.<br>
She said that it would be dangerous to entrust him with the country’s nuclear codes.<br>

<p dir="ltr">President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday held separate meetings with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Anglican bishops on the state of the nation.<br>
Conflicts herdsmen and farmers have raised security concerns, further worsened by renewed militancy in the Niger Delta and agitations by pro-Biafra protesters.<br>
Buhari met Obasanjo behind closed doors at the presidential villa shortly after arriving in company with his friend, Johnson Fasawe, at 12:30pm.<br>
This was Obasanjo’s third visit to the villa, and he refused to take questions after the meeting.<br>
Although the details were not made public, TheCable understands that it was part of consultations being made by Buhari over the political tensions in the country.<br>
Obasanjo was president from 1999 to 2007, during which he faced similar security challenges in the south-south and south-east.<br>
Buhari later met with some Anglican bishops who urged him to end the menace of the herdsmen and pipeline vandalism in the country.<br>
Nicholas Okoh, primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), led the clerics.<br>
“We told him (Buhari) many things but part of it is that we are all looking for solution to issues of the herdsmen, issue of vandalism on security in one way or the other,” Okoh said.<br>
“This is because the people are asking us and we want to have explanation for the people whom we lead.”<br>
Okoh said Buhari’s response were satisfactory and “very favourable”.<br>
”He gave us detailed explanations of what he is doing to ensure that these things are solved. So, we have hope, we have message for our people,” he said.<br>

Nigeria Releases Census Of Goats, Sheep, Pigs, Other Livestock In Country

<p dir="ltr">The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh on Thursday released a census of livestock in the country.<br>
Mr. Ogbeh spoke at a news conference in Abuja.<br>
He said the 2011 National Agricultural Sample Survey indicated that Nigeria was endowed with an estimated 19.5 million cattle, 72.5 million goats, 41.3 million sheep, 7.1 million pigs and 28,000 camels.<br>
Accordingly, the minister said the country had 145 million chickens, 11.6 million ducks, 1.2 million turkeys and 974, 499 donkeys.<br>
Mr. Ogbeh said this impressive statistics which had made Nigeria number one in livestock in Africa had not met the national demand of animal protein or contributed to the GDP over the years.<br>
He decried the low milk production in Nigeria as a cow produced one litre of milk a day while a cow in Saudi Arabia or Brazil produced 30 to 40 litres.<br>
“Saudi Arabia produces 4.7 million litres of milk daily while Nigeria imports about 1.3 billion dollar worth of milk annually to make up deficit.<br>
The minister said of all the enterprise in the livestock sector, only the poultry industry had achieved an appreciable level of commercialization.<br>
 Mr. Ogbeh said other industries in the livestock sector were predominantly in the hands of subsistence farmers with pastoralist system of production contributing over 90 per cent of cattle production in the country.<br>

EFCC Takes Anti-Corruption Crusade To IDP Camps

<p dir="ltr">The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu has vowed to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of funds meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) especially in Maiduguri, Borno state.<br>
A statement yesterday from EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren said the EFCC chairman said the probe will include all IDP camps in the country, made the declaration yesterday in Maiduguri, while speaking at the newly reopened Zonal office of the Commission.<br>
Uwujaren said the EFCC boss expressed worry about complaints of corruption in IDP Camps, coming from International humanitarian organizations and other civil society organizations that are helping the distressed victims of the Boko Haram insurgency in the city and beyond.<br>
“We want to be sure that there is transparency, accountability and judicious use of the money allocated to Internally Displaced Persons in Maiduguri and elsewhere,” the statement said.<br>

Fashola: I said power assets were LEGALLY, not ILLEGALLY, sold

<p dir="ltr">Legally and illegally can sound alike at times, especially if you switch off your hearing for a millisecond.<br>
According to Babatunde Fashola, minister of power, works and housing, his statement on the sale of power assets by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan was distorted by the prefixing of ‘il’ to ‘legally’ by the media.<br>
In a statement signed by his spokesman, Hakeem Bello, Fashola expressed disappointment that his word was illegally stretched by two letters.<br>
Talk about padding.<br>
THE FULL STATEMENT (REBUTTAL, THAT IS)<br>
The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing,<br>
Wednesday debunked the Daily Trust’s lead story of same day quoting the Minister , Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN as saying that the nation’s Power Sector was illegally sold.<br>
The alleged statement, according to Daily Trust, was made on Tuesday at the Senate public hearing on electricity tariff where the Minister was alleged to have told the Senate Committee that as a Minister he inherited a Power Sector “where government’s interests have been illegally sold.”<br>
In a statement, his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Hakeem Bello, distanced the Minister from the alleged pronouncement saying in all presentations before the Senate Committee, the Minister never used the word “illegally” to refer to the privatization of the Sector by the Federal Government. Rather, and this can be verified by a playback of the video recording of the session, the Minister in his opening remark at the session noted,<br>
“ …As Minister, I inherited a Power Sector where Government interests had been LEGALLY sold…”<br>
According to the Statement, the Minister in tracing how the country got to this point referred to the Privatization Law made in 2005, “The people of this country through their parliamentarians made a verdict in 2005 when you passed that law that things must change, the law was passed in 2005 and the process was completed in 2013, I wasn’t here, some of you were here, if the process is bad where was the oversight”.<br>
The Statement also quoted the Minister as telling the Senate, “I will commend to this Committee the Report of the House of Representatives that investigated the matter. I will also commend to you Sirs, some of the Reports that have been made by the Senate Committee on Privatization. The basic reason for the passage of the Power Sector Reforms Bill that was passed in 2005 is that we all know that the government was not doing its business well”.<br>
It stated that in apparent defence of the Law, the Minister also told the Senate, “These decisions were taken before any of us was here. If it was working why change it, who were the people that were employed to make it work, it was our employers in the TUC and other unions, and if they complain that the dam was not working and the power plant was not working, that was why they were hired”.<br>
And describing the Power Sector Reform Law as “a great law”, according to the Statement, the Minister, who had made reference to a question by one of the Senators as to when the results of Privatization would be seen, had reminded the Senate Committee that the privatization exercise would be three years old in November this year, citing the example of the Communication Sector that was privatized over ten years ago which benefits were still evolving.<br>
It quoted the Minister as saying, “Let us reflect back to a sector that we have privatized like this before, were the results this outstanding three years after we passed the GSM reforms? As we speak today some people can still not afford the GSM; some are going to buy<br>
tomorrow. When the GSM kicked off, they did not kick off in Abuja, they opened first in Kano, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Aba, that were commercially viable, those were tariffs being set for those who could pay for it.”<br>
The Minister, the Statement also quoted, told the Committee that three years was hardly enough to expect any significant results from the exercise adding, “But I have been here for a year and less and I think that this system can work , India has done what we are doing, China has done what we are doing, Mexico has done what we are doing, Brazil has done what we are doing and South Africa ,they went through all of these hiccups and I think we should inform ourselves before we jump to some conclusions really. If we cancel this privatization, what do we go back to, what are our choices”.<br>
“If other nations have been through this and have survived, I think we must resolve to do what it takes to make it work”, the Statement also quoted the Minister as saying, asking the question, “Is three years enough? ECN was created in 1953; … I don’t know that time, but the truth is that in those 63 years how many people did ECN meter so as to expect that same number can be metered in three years, so we must look at this in a context”.<br>
Also debunking the allegation that the Distribution companies were yet to make a significant investment in the sector, the Minister had said, “We have a challenge and I think it can be overcome, people have made statements here that are not correct and they may mislead you saying there are no investments in the sector. Just on Monday the United States through its Power Africa Initiative granted support in the region of $9 million for technical advisory capacity to the same DisCos trying to build efficiency, it is one thing to condemn all the DisCos but to say shut down the business, where is that taking us”.<br>
Some other remarks which the Minister made at the event, according to the Statement include the following; “People have said the DisCos, it is possible that some of them do not have the technical capacity, it is possible that some of them do not have the financial capacity, there were institutions here when those decisions were being taken, I wasn’t here but I have decided to stop clinging to the past and move on, how can we help those who are weak, how can we support those who have technical deficiency?”<br>
“In terms of regulation, we are moving from a period where there was no NERC and therefore, the Ministry was the be all and end all to the period where we have to create a private regulator. Just like you have the NCC in telecoms, NERC is the NCC of power and it will take time also. Everybody is learning, we have had to reconstitute the traditional departments in the Ministry of Power in order to create departments that respond to what we now have.<br>
“I come from a view that you don’t sanction a people unless you have given them all the tools to work. Governments, ministries, departments and agencies are owing these people, there are also debts; tariffs were set on assumed level of power supply, government has not delivered on that power supply, so the fundamental assumption of performance are also not there.<br>
“Government cannot deliver on that power partly because the fuel for that power is being punctured; it’s like leaking the fuel of your own generators, we cannot insist on performance. We have no moral right to sanction them if we have not kept our side of the bargain. But we are insisting on performance, we have asked them to submit their audited accounts for the last 3 years, some have done so while others have not done so, we have started a ranking system, ranking safety, ranking performance, ranking collection to create competition as a basis for sanctioning performance, so that the rules of the game are clear from the beginning.<br>
Describing the Daily Trust report as unfounded and misleading, the Statement enjoined newsmen to always endeavour to clarify their facts before going public , pointing out that the media department and indeed other officials of the Ministry were always ready to answer questions and clarify any issues concerning the Ministry.<br>

Spanish journalist Pipi Estrada revealed that, before last week’s final, the Real Madrid superstar “had spoken with (agent) Jorge Mendes and asked him to take charge of distributing the money to the needy”.<br>
Three-time world player of the year Ronaldo sparked doubts over his fitness with a muted display in the showpiece against Atletico Madrid in Milan, although he fired the penalty shootout winner.<br>
But any short-term criticism he receives might be overshadowed by the long-term good his donation of 600,000 Euros (£463,000) will do.<br>
Ronaldo – Portugal’s main hope at Euro 2016 – winded down after the final with a holiday on a yacht in Ibiza with friends.<br>
And he provoked more mixed reaction when Wolfsburg star Bruno Henrique disclosed how the former Manchester United flier spent much of their Champions League quarter-final checking himself on the big screens.<br>
But the former Manchester United flier’s latest gesture confirms what many who know him personally have said about his generosity.<br>
Of course, in terms of hard cash, this has a different meaning to the likes of you and me.<br>
Last year Ronaldo, 31, was third on the Forbes rich list of sporting competitors, reportedly earning £34million from pay and bonuses PLUS £17m from endorsements.<br>
That total of £51m pipped the £47.5m reputedly accrued by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.<br>
But even their combined earnings were eclipsed by two boxing legends, Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao picking up £103m and American Floyd Mayweather £193m.<br>
Ronaldo, though, insists none of that matters to him.<br>
He won three Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, before taking the Spanish crown and twice more Europe’s top domestic competition with Real.<br>
And his main concern for now will be to regain peak form for the Euros this month, while his main footballing rival Messi attempts to inspire Argentina to victory in the Copa America.<br>
