<p dir="ltr">By Dele Momodu</p> <p dir="ltr">Fellow Nigerians, please, permit me to invite you on a flight to the United States of America this weekend. You must be wondering what is my own with American elections, I’m sure. Many have asked me to my face if I’m able to vote in America or why am I flexing muscles like a pugilist. Truth is America is the first nation of the world. Love them, loathe them, the Americans know how to mesmerise and hypnotise everyone of us. And they are so good at it.<br> In case you’ve not noticed, Nigerians and Americans have so much in common. As a matter of fact, many have described us as the Americans of Africa. Nigerians are flamboyant, boastful, loud, brilliant, fun-loving, entertaining, adventurous and so on. Many people hate us for those attributes. But like the Americans, we hardly care and we just do our own thing as the mood directs us. So be it.<br> The other thing is that there are too many Nigerians sojourning or living permanently in the US. What is even more important is that they are good ambassadors of our country. On some of my trips, I attended The Nigerian Reunion summits (probably the largest gathering of Nigerians abroad apart from the Nigerian Independence Parade in New York and the Nottinghill Carnival in London), The Eko Club activities, the Nigerian Medical Practitioners in America, the African Times Awards in Los Angeles, The Moremi Club events, the Africa Women in Leadership conferences, the so many beautiful weddings and birthday bashes, there were always so many distinguished Nigerians doing great things. We have featured too many of such great men and women in Ovation in the past 20 years yet it seems like a drop in the ocean.<br> Nigerian doctors, pharmacists, nurses, lawyers, lecturers, bankers, scientists, surgeons, engineers, businessmen and women and other professionals litter everywhere. United States has been our major business partner. Many African Americans have traced their roots to Nigeria and truly they display many of our sharp features. Nigerians love America and there is hardly any major university you won’t find a Nigerian studying or teaching. So no one should be surprised if we appear to be behaving like outsiders crying louder than the bereaved.<br> My love for American politics is huge. Politics has been turned to reality shows in the US. That fact has become palpable this year with the emergence of the Commander-in-Chief of Abusers, Donald Trump, and the old man, Bernie Sanders who continues to behave like a sore loser. A man who claims he’s been cheated but does not mind asking the super delegates to upturn a presidential primary in which he’s been beaten soundly and roundly by Hillary Clinton by a margin as wide as over three million votes and so many pledged delegates and super delegates. What manner of injustice is this from a man who claims to be a socialist revolutionary?<br> I’m always glued to television, especially CNN. It is incredible the depth of political analysis and the excruciating pain candidates must endure by fire by force going through endless debates and press interviews. It is difficult for a complete ignoramus or nonentity to become the President of America. I never want the race to end once it begins. And this year’s has been more than exciting. It has been a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly. But all that concerns me is how Hillary Clinton would become the first female President and Commander-in-Chief of the United States armed forces.<br> I know you are likely to ask why Hillary? That answer is too simple and straightforward. I have been a fanatical fan of Hillary. It all started from a tragedy that befell the Clinton family when her husband was accused of infidelity and President Bill Clinton was nearly sacked. Anyway, all the self-appointed Pontiffs started their holier-than-thou demonstrations. Bill must be destroyed instantly and totally. At a point, it seemed all hope was lost and he was going to go with the winds but merciful God brought him back from the brink. I believed God used one woman to save his skin and that woman is the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party today, HILLARY. Once Hillary forgave her husband, who are we to judge anyone? From that day, she gained my respect and admiration. An average human being would have thrown caution to the winds but not Hillary. I do not care if she managed to slap her husband in their bedroom but none of us witnessed it. That is the hallmark of a smart and intelligent woman.<br> There’s no way Hillary would not have been angry. She is human and would have had justification for behaving even erratically but she was forward-looking. She’s a woman who saw tomorrow and held it with both hands. She chose family over destructive rancour. Only a visionary does that and I decided to support her whenever the chance presents itself. I knew that day would come about and indeed it came. The year was 2008 and for the first time an African American, Barack Obama was the charming contender. The war between the two was bound to be hotter than that of Muhammad Ali against George Foreman. Would I leave my first dream for a second one that came from the blues? I was saddled with a big dilemma but I thought long and hard and settled for Hillary against Obama. That is me. I do what I believe, just like I supported Buhari against Jonathan who could have performed miracles in my life. But I must have positive reasons for reaching my decisions. That is why I supported Jonathan when he was being bullied by the cabal and I was never a member of PDP.<br> Many Nigerians were shocked at my choice of Hillary. Some even abused me as if I had no right to my own choice. But I’m used to that now. The primary was hotly contested and Obama won. I couldn’t believe it but later saw the hand of fate in it. It was a bitter pill to swallow by Hillary supporters like me but we eventually accepted God’s verdict. While we were busy sulking, Hillary endorsed Obama. Not just that, she and her charismatic husband joined Obama and campaigned with and for him vigorously and rigorously. The maturity displayed by this famous couple was uncanny. They saw what most people could never see, tomorrow; and did what most people would not do, magnanimity. That was it. They crossed the Rubicon and remained steadfast. They sowed a seed that would take eight solid years to grow and harvest but did not mind. How many people would have such patience at this time and age?<br> Obama won and made Hillary one of the most powerful Secretaries of State America ever had. Trouble was it was not only Hillary who saw tomorrow, her enemies even saw beyond tomorrow and waited for her with road blocks at every corner, day and night. She was never acknowledged for things that went right. She was attacked for anything that went awry. Such is the way and manner of man’s inhumanity to man. But when God is with you who can be against you? Hillary will be recorded in American history as the most investigated public officer. She’s had to sit through some horrendous interrogations lasting almost half a day. The brave woman defended herself as much as she could possibly do. Her traducers have searched everywhere looking for any dirt they could splash at her but the stains have been rather weak and nothing indelible.<br> Going into this year’s election, this formidable and irrepressible woman has been fired at from two ferocious cylinders by two trigger-happy snipers, yet no bullet has hit her. She has recorded more votes than both the internal and external challengers. Hillary is unfazed and unbowed. Her main opponent now, a rambunctious fellow called Donald Trump has been an embarrassment to even the party he claims as his but which he merely hijacked and it is obvious that God deliberately raised him up to make the difference crystal clear and make the job somewhat cleaner. For those who believe in God, His ways are not those of men. Whatever he would do, he would do so well as to leave no doubts that he did it so resoundingly. I’m reasonably convinced that the world is set to watch and see another miracle so soon after a Black man became the world’s greatest President. These are just interesting times.<br> I have told those who care to listen that this is Hillary’s time. No matter what Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump decide to do, Hillary will triumph, according to the will of God. An average African is familiar with the concept of Destiny, what the Yoruba would call ori or ayanmo. No man or woman can be President without God playing a role one way or another. I never expected to see an apartheid-free South Africa in my lifetime. I was so sure Mandela would never be released and he may eventually die in prison. Not only did he come out alive, he contested and won the Presidency ostensibly. What’s even more remarkable, he forgave his enemies and encouraged genuine reconciliation across the land. He did his best within one term and chose to quit when the ovation was loudest.<br> The greatest surprise for me was the first election that ushered in Obama. I was in Newark with my good friend Benny Obaze of The House of Bevista, and I assured him there was no way all those white supremacists would allow a Blackman to get power. In fact, I was so scared of how the African Americans would react to Obama’s defeat and I decided to run back to London that very night. Benny saw me off and we spent time at the Virgin Atlantic lounge where we argued again over the chances of Obama. Everywhere was tense as we could just picture what would happen if the sharpest Black candidate missed the boat.<br> I boarded my flight that night and slept off almost immediately trying to put the American election way behind me. We were close to landing in London when the Captain woke us up with one of that rare news: OBAMA has just won the Presidential election. The entire plane roared spontaneously into bouts of congratulations. That was it. NEITI Report: Nigerian Senate sets anti-corruption record

<p dir="ltr">The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) did not remit $12.9bn to the federation account between 2005 and 2013,” Waziri Adio, executive secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), said on Wednesday.<br> Adio made this revelation before a packed chamber of the Nigeria senate. The NEITI boss, who was speaking on the agency’s 2013 audit report of the oil and gas sector, was the first to be accorded the honour of making a presentation on such a matter before the upper legislative chamber in the present democratic dispensation.<br> He later expressed the historicity of the occasion in a series of tweets on his twitter handle- @waziriadio. “Thanks, Your Excellency for giving us the rare opportunity to address @NGRSenate on this very critical national issue,” Adio said in reference to Senate President Bukola Saraki “We are grateful for the opportunity granted by SP @bukolasaraki and distinguished senators to brief @NGRSenate today on @nigeriaeiti reports.<br> “This is historic, being the first time @nigeriaeiti's reports will be taken seriously by NASS. We welcome the committee set up by @NGRSenate.<br> “We hope this marks a real turning-point in fixing the deep gaps in our extractive sector. Thanks again to SP@bukolasaraki .”<br> Indubitably, by its action in adopting the report and setting up a committee to look into it, the senate has set a record in the war against corruption. Among other revelations, the NEITI boss asserted that Nigeria was only sure of the amount of crude oil it exports, but could not say the quantity of the commodity it produces.<br> He explained that the lack of accurate information on the actual quantity of crude oil Nigeria produces was compounded by the absence of a proper metering system.<br> "In 2013, the country produced 800.3 million barrels and out of that the country made $58.07 bn and that represents an eight percent reduction on the $62.9bn that the country made in 2012," he said.<br> "The second issue is that there are some monies that were withheld, lost or underpaid for different reasons.<br> "These monies are in three tranches.The first is in the category of the unremitted, and the unremitted amounted to $3.8bn and N358m.<br> "The second category is the category of losses, because of some inefficient practices and theft among other things, the country lost $5.9bn and N20bn.<br> "Under the category of the under-assessed the country lost $599.8m.<br> "When we look at the unremitted $1.7bn is still being owed the federation for OMLS.<br> "Also, $1.29bn from the NLNG dividends and N351bn from unpaid domestic crude debt, N2.17bn from cash calls refunds.<br> "Those are the monies we have established that should have been paid to the federation and were not paid.<br> "The second category of losses by NNPC and its subsidiaries. Out of the $5.9bn, N4.7 bn was lost to theft and vandalism.<br> "N20bn was lost because the NNPC did not observe the 90 days credit grace and when you look at the time value of money, if you calculate at 12 percent interest the country lost N20bn.<br> "Some of the issues in the report. The first is about the assets divested by NNPC to NPDC. NNPC between 2010 and 2011 divested eight assets that belong to the federation to its upstream subsidiary NPDC. So NNPC divested 55 percent of the shares being held on behalf of the federation to the NPDC.<br> "These eight OMLS are valued at $1.8bn by DPR. NPDC paid only $100m out of the $1.8bn meaning there is an outstanding of $1.7 bn, and even that $100m was paid two years after.<br> "What this means is that NNPC lifted oil on behalf of NPDC not on behalf the federation despite the fact that NPDC has not fully paid for those assets.<br> "Another issue that came out of the audit is the NLNG dividend. NLNG in 2013 paid $1.28 bn, but the money was not remitted to the federation account.<br> "Beyond this between 2005 and 2013 NLNG paid $12.9bn to NNPC and NNPC acknowledged receiving it, but the money was not remitted to the federation account.<br> "Another is the losses incurred from swap and OPA. This is the arrangement where NNPC exchanges crude for product and the country lost $518m due to the inefficiency of the swap and OPA.<br> "$211m was lost to product swap and $306m was lost to OPA.<br> "N1.3trn was posted for petroleum subsidy in 2013. It was 30 percent higher than the total for budget education, health, water and SURE-P.<br> "We found out that we have infrastructural deficit- the country can only say what it exports and cannot say authoritatively what it produces.<br> "This has always been an issue and the audit confirms that we still don’t have meters where we should have them.<br> "This lack of metering has serious implication for revenue and national security."<br> Speaking after the presentation, Saraki assured Adio that the senate would take action on the recommendations in the report.<br> "I can assure you will discuss this report fully, and we will take action. We will task the executive to prosecute those who are culpable," he said. <p dir="ltr">Former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro yesterday slammed a N100 million suit on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before the Federal High Court in Lagos over an alleged breached of his fundamental human rights.<br> The former Minister is demanding the sum as general damages for the alleged unlawful and unconstitutional seizure and detention of several items, properties and personal effects belonging to him and family by the EFCC on June 24, 2016.<br> Other applicants in the suit are: Mrs. Fati Obanikoro, Alhaja Moroophat Obanikoro, Gbolahon Obanikoro, Babajide Obanikoro.<br> Obanikoro in the fundamental rights enforcement suit, filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Chief Ogwu Onoja (SAN), is also praying the court to restrain the EFCC whether by its officers, Servants, privies, assigns or agents from arresting, detaining, harassing any of the applicants or any of their relatives pending the hearing and determination of the suit.<br> The applicants also want the court to restrain the commission from further entering their premises and an order Directing it to tender an unreserved public apology to them for the unlawful action.<br> They are also asking the court to direct the respondent to release all the items, properties and personal effects seized from their premises.<br> The applicants further want the court to hold that the action of the EFCC constitute a gross violation of their fundamental rights as guarantee under section 43 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 14 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.<br> In a 15 paragraphs affidavit attached to the suit and sworn to by Mrs. Fati Obanikoro, states that on June 14 some officials of the EFCC numbering about 20 stormed their premises situated at 10 Mojisola Onikoyi Street, by Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos and took away several items.<br> She also alleged that the respondent thereafter proceeded to also search the personal house of the former Minister at 4 Layi Ajayi-Bembe road, Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos<br> She also claimed that before the alleged invasion of the premises there was no prior notice by way of letter or invitation served on any of the applicants and there was also no order of court mandating them to carry out the action.<br> She list some of the items seized by the Commission to include: building plans, cheque leaflets, company documents, car keys, phones, two company seals and six company stam<br> The applicant further averred that the EFCC officials claimed that they are investigating the former Minister and two of his children but some of the properties taken away do not belong to them.<br> She also insisted that unless the court issued an order compelling the commission, it will not return the seized properties.<br> No date has been set for the hearing of the suit.</p> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8M32WDkTiWqD9hN2bxClO9KrCVpL8WDPqriaj1wdopOHmGvySwc3p6HBWoKLkTB4U-SNlbtbNXqQuSeM9kdzGXVEw6kxTjVlAjE_ep_EDpSm8J6nJN_L-Gf-PyKqQsqZs-2BudhXFHd-R/s1600/Musiliu-Obanikoro.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8M32WDkTiWqD9hN2bxClO9KrCVpL8WDPqriaj1wdopOHmGvySwc3p6HBWoKLkTB4U-SNlbtbNXqQuSeM9kdzGXVEw6kxTjVlAjE_ep_EDpSm8J6nJN_L-Gf-PyKqQsqZs-2BudhXFHd-R/s400/Musiliu-Obanikoro.png"> </a> </div>

Dealing with Stress- How not to Get Overwhelmed

<p dir="ltr">By <u>Tolulope</u> <u>Olaifa</u><br> In Nigeria, we find ourselves facing stress on all sides- economic decline, power shortage, fuel price increase, even the “common” tomatoes we took for granted have started showing themselves. Believe it or not, accumulated stress is one of the major reasons why there has been an alarming increase in the death rate of young and middle age adults in Nigeria.  Unfortunately, Nigerians do not seem to understand the need to take a step back and relax for a while. Even while we are sleeping, some of us (even I’m guilty) find ourselves dreaming of unfinished work and missing deadlines. Our bodies are not built to take such amounts of stress, so once in a while, we need to take a step back and realise that life goes on, irrespective of whatever happens. These are a few tips for dealing with stress in your daily life.</p> <p dir="ltr">DO NOT GO HOME IN WORK MODE. Leave the stress of the day and of your job at the door, so that you can relax by yourself or with your family. Your home should be a haven for relaxation, not an extension of the office.<br> Set boundaries and goals for each day. Do not let irrelevant worries that you can’t fix at that very moment get to you, because it will affect productivity. <br> Try to slide in a few minutes of exercise during the day. Sitting in one spot only serves to cloud your brain and tire you out.<br> If you need help, ask-You are not a superhero. Stop trying to do it all by yourself. If you find yourself stranded, ask for help from friends and colleagues.<br> Remember that work never ends- If you are killing yourself because you want to clear your desk up for tomorrow, you will only come back and meet more tasks. Get used to that fact.<br> Remember to stop and just breathe- Instead of blowing up or freaking out, remember to ask yourself “is it worth it?” Calm yourself with a few deep breaths and take a few moments to relax.<br> Treat yourself once in a while- Check yourself into a hotel, go to a spa or go out to dinner.  You find out that taking a trip during the weekend, or on your casual leave helps you relax better than if you are holed up at home (it doesn’t have to be out of Nigeria, Nigeria has awesome getaway spots). Man accuses Ghanaian actor Van Vicker of sleeping with his wife, claims 'he has caught them at a hotel twice'

<p dir="ltr">A U.S. based man has accused Ghanaian actor Van Vicker of having an affair with his wife. The popular actor(pictured with the woman) is married to Adjoa Vicker and they have three kids together.<br> According to Ghnews360.com, the man identified as Dr. Bartum Kulah who is based in Atlanta Georgia, said the actor is having physical and emotional affair with his wife, Clarice Ford-Kulah who claims to be Vicker’s Manager and Business partner.<br> "My wife will deny the accusations and claim to be Van Vicker’s Manager and Business partner, that’s what she always says, it’s all a cover up, and I’ve caught them at a hotel twice", Dr. Bartum Kulah.<br> Dr Kulah said they have been married for long years with two children, a boy and girl but his wife Clarice Ford-Kulah does not care about the children, all she knows is travelling with van vicker.<br> "She has been in Accra since Wednesday to premiere the film Skinned at the Silverbird, they will then go to Liberia to premiere the same film<br> next Saturday, not only that but sleeping with my wife anywhere they go to premiere the movie. This is the second trip in a year. They have traveled to Haiti, Liberia, Nigeria, Ireland and multiple cities in the US. I really have evidence to show that Van Vicker is sleeping with my wife and even warned my wife on that but still they are doing it".<br> Dr. Bartum Kulah has warned that "This is part one. I will bring all the pictures and videos. I mean all the evidence out if they refuse to stop especially Van Vicker"<br> Dr. Clarice Ford-Kulah has debunked the allegations by her husband. According to the mother-of-two, the allegations are totally untrue. She says her husband is very insecure and has been "harassing" all her male friends for years.<br> She responded to the allegations in a statement released today. <p dir="ltr">Stephen Jnr and Jennifer Keshi have arrived Nigeria for preparation of their father, Stephen Keshi's burial. The former Super Eagles Coach died in Edo state last week Wednesday June 8th. Stephen Keshi Jnr says they are working with the Federal government, Delta and Edo state government and other well meaning Nigerians to give him a befitting burial. No date has been fixed for his burial.</p>

Central Bank Of Nigeria announces new Flexible Forex regime

<p dir="ltr">The Central Bank of Nigeria today announced a flexible foreign exchange regime that would be determined by market forces. Speaking at a news conference in Abuja today June 15th, the Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele said under the new plan, the official exchange rate of the naira will exist in a "single flexible window," which will take off on June 20th.<br> The announcement end months of speculation about the official value of the Nigerian currency. A series of measures to manage the new forex policy includes the introduction of Forex Primary Dealers, a Futures Market to enable end users to lock down rates and 12 other measures to ensure transparency and stability of the new market. List of 23 Conditions state governors must meet to access FG's N90bn loan

<p dir="ltr">Here is a list of all the 23 conditions state governors have to fulfill to access the Federal government's N90 billion loan that was announced by Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun yesterday June 14th. The conditions include;<br> 1. Publish audited annual financial statements<br> within nine months of financial year end.<br> 2. Comply with the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS)<br> 3. Publish state budget online annually<br> 4. Publish budget implementation performance report online quarterly<br> 5. Develop standard IPSAS compliant software to be offered to states for use by state and local governments<br> 6. Set realistic and achievable targets to improve independently generated revenue (from all revenue generating activities of the state in addition to tax collections) and ratio of capital to recurrent expenditure<br> 7. Implement targets<br> 8. Implement a centralised Treasury Single Account (TSA) in each state<br> 9. Have quarterly financial reconciliation meetings with federal government to cover VAT, PAYE remittances, refunds on government projects, Paris Club and other accounts<br> 10. Share the database of companies within each state with the Federal Inland Revenue service (FIRS). The objective is to improve VAT and PAYE collection<br> 11. Introduce a system to allow for the immediate issue of VAT/WHT certificates on payment of invoices. Review all revenue related laws and update obsolete rates/tariffs<br> 12. Sokoto state governor increases allowance of Youth Corp members serving in the state

<p dir="ltr">Sokoto state government has jacked up allowances of Youth Corps members serving in the state. Governor Aminu Tambuwal announced the new policy during the swearing-in ceremony of 2016 Batch A Stream II corps members at the state NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko on Monday June 13th.<br> “Graduates of medicine will now be paid N50,000 from the current amount of N36,000. Pharmacists will now N25,000 up from the N19,000 obtainable in the past, while graduates of lab science and other medical technicians like nurses are now entitled to monthly stipend of N15,000, up from the current N9,000 they are getting from the state government. In the same vein, graduates of social science and humanities will now be paid N5,000 monthly, a one thousand addition from the previous N4,000 they receive from as state allawee"he said. While urging the youth corps members to reciprocate government gesture by being diligent in their areas of primary assignments, Tambuwal urged them to shun vices that will lead to breakdown of law and order and communal harmony. “I urge you to shun militancy, terrorism and cultism. Woman allegedly set ablaze by husband in Benin following a disagreement

<p dir="ltr">A man has been arrested by police in Edo State for allegedly setting his wife ablaze following a disagreement over his refusal to attend her father's funeral.<br> According to PM News, the man identified as Onya on Saturday, June 11, poured petrol on his wife, Margaret Onya and set her on fire at their residence located at No. 35, JB street, Ekosodin quarters, off Ugbowo-Lagos Road, Benin City.<br> Margaret suffered severe burns from the incident is now being treated at a private hospital in Benin City. Speaking from her hospital bed, she said:<br> "We had a quarrel and my husband told me he would teach me a lesson. After our disagreement, I sat on the chair and my husband went inside, brought petrol and wanted to pour it on me. I held the jar and as we were dragging, I was shouting for help. He overpowered me and poured the contents on me and lit a match. Just over a year ago, people voted in a historic democratic election to end corruption and business as usual, opting instead to build an economy that delivers for all Nigerians. The old order was based on an unsustainable commodities supercycle. While the boom had many positives and contributed to Nigeria becoming Africa’s largest economy, it fostered an epidemic of corruption and inefficiency.<br> Foreign businesses and financial institutions also benefited as some people spent and sometimes hid huge sums abroad, lifted by the rising tide of oil exports and dollar revenues. Now we are living in a new world of low energy prices.<br> The economy has slowed while unemployment and inflation have jumped. Longstanding structural imbalances and overdependence on imports have been cruelly exposed. We are an oil-rich nation that imports most of our gasoline.<br> We are a farming nation that imports most of our basic food staples. This is simply not acceptable or sustainable. Our solutions must be in proportion to the challenges. Fundamental change takes time and we are driving not one but three changes to reposition Nigeria for inclusive growth.<br> Restore Trust<br> We have begun to tackle the endemic corruption and mismanagement that is crippling our economy and corroding trust in our institutions. The anticorruption fight is at the heart of combating poverty and improving security.<br> We have stepped up enforcement and new prosecutions to get our house in order, and I have called for foreign governments to work with us to identify where funds stolen during previous administrations are lodged and for multistate cooperation to combat oil theft. Fighting corruption is not enough.<br> We need accountable government and a public sector that can do more with less. We have already taken initial steps by bringing all government finances into a single treasury account where we can monitor spending and impose discipline, implementing zero-based budgets and benchmarks targeted at waste and fraud, and establishing electronic platforms for government agency interface.<br> Rebalance Our Economy In a world of lower oil prices and dollar revenues, the only sustainable path is to reduce Nigerians’ overreliance on imports. We must rebalance our economy by empowering entrepreneurs and producers, big and small, to create more of what their fellow Nigerians demand. The supply of foreign exchange to the economy must be increased. This requires radically increasing exports and productivity and improving the investment climate and ease of doing business. Nigeria’s growth and job creation will be led by the private sector.<br> We are a young, entrepreneurial society with vibrant success stories in new industries such as telecommunications, technology and entertainment. Government is doing its part to lower taxes on small businesses, eliminate bureaucracy to bring the informal economy out of the shadows and provide development funding for priority sectors such as agriculture. The central bank has moved to introduce greater flexibility in our exchange-rate policy. These actions are a downpayment on our people’s ability to succeed.<br> Regenerate Growth<br> We must reposition our economy by attracting investment in domestic industries and infrastructure. Nigeria has huge untapped gas reserves and also a critical shortage of electricity. Our private sector loses too much of its revenue due to brownouts and power outages.<br> Half of my fellow Nigerians have no access to the power grid. Investment in our power infrastructure, restructuring of the state-run oil-and-gas sector and development of other industries such as solid minerals, metals and petrochemicals will help to create a virtuous circle of growth and exports while creating jobs and reducing poverty.<br> I am optimistic that our actions are providing the breathing room Nigeria needs during this period of fundamental change. But we cannot improve living conditions and restore fiscal health without making people feel safe and secure—just as we cannot defeat militancy without reducing poverty and dislocation. One of our main achievements this past year has been to unite regional and global allies to push back Boko Haram. <div class="image-container" itemprop="image"> <img alt="NNPC_Logo-600x528" class="attachment-full size-full wp-post-image" height="528" src="http://4a7jjc25uykf24u8sd3k8m5n.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/NNPC_Logo-600x528.jpg" width="600" /> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Tuesday said parts of the $12.9 billion dividends it received from the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Ltd on behalf of the federation but which it did not remit over a period of eight years was not missing but reinvested into other gas projects.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The corporation also said the balance of the dividend has been moved to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), adding that it was no longer housing the money in line with the federal government’s directive on the Treasury Single Account (TSA).<br /> NNPC stated these in Abuja when the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) convened a stakeholders’ dialogue on the 2013 audit report of activities in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It said that it took and ploughed back parts of the dividends to new trains that were built by the NLNG.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It equally listed the BrassLNG and OlokolaLNG projects, as well as other gas projects it did not mention, as other beneficiaries from the dividend. The BrassLNG and OlokolaLNG projects have however remained on the ground.<br /> NNPC explained that the reinvestment in NLNG was part of its equity share of the cost of such expansion in its trains. The idea is to tie states over for a year so that they rebalance. The loan is an average of about N1.3 billion per state for the first three months and N1.1billion for the next nine months. It is a loan and it is fully repayable although it has a secured tie against future dividends, revenues and any amount that government might owe the states.”she said </blockquote> She also announced that state governors are not to collect any more loans from banks but should rather source for funds from the capital market. The decision was taken due to the disappointing manner in which some past and present state governors have managed the loans they have taken from some commercial banks. She noted that the stability of the economy in the states would reflect on the economy of the country as a whole.<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> “Nigeria’s economy is a confederation of the economies of her 36 states and the FCT. Thus, we recognise the critical importance of developing a broad-based economy, with productive activities in every region and state. At the federal level, to create headroom for the urgently needed investment in infrastructure, we are pursuing a very disciplined approach to managing public funds, ensuring the maximisation of revenues and the minimisation of the costs of governance. The Fiscal Sustainability Plan, FSP, replicates this far-reaching public financial management reform programme across all tiers of government and marks a turning point in the management of state finances. By raising the standard for public financial management in the areas of transparency, accountability and efficiency, states will be repositioned to embark on a path towards fiscal independence. On the cost side, the pressure is to cut costs, starting with the commitment to eliminate, once and for all, the menace of ghost workers by BVN checking of payroll and the requirement that all salary payments are made directly to individual accounts. This will enable states control the size of their wage bill and ensure that it is affordable. The formal commitments being made to improve expense management, greater efficiency in recurrent spending and prudent debt management will combine to ensure that states can move towards improved long term financial health. In the area of revenue, the FSP is based on the fundamental principle that each and every state in Nigeria must be economically viable. According to him, it was wrong and criminal for a section or group of people to have directed some innocent students to wear choir robes to schools against court’s judgment.<br /> <br /> He urged whoever was not satisfied with the judgment to ventilate the grievance through legitimate means rather than trying to cause crises by resorting to self help. Aregbesola also stated that the Government is not interested in any religion as being speculated and his goal is to improve education standard in the state.’

Ajaokuta steel plant is 90% complete - Senator Ben Bruce

<p dir="ltr"><b>Ben Murray Bruce, senator representing Bayelsa east constituency and chairman of senate committee on privatisation, says Ajaokuta steel plant is 90 percent complete.</b><br></p> <p dir="ltr">Bruce, who led a delegation of the joint committee of the national assembly to the plant in Kogi state on Tuesday, said the project had been abandoned for too long.</p> <p dir="ltr">“With Senate and House committee on privatization today at Ajaokuta. As Chairman I declare Ajaokuta is 90% complete, yet, this national treasure has been left to rot! This must change,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“For 22 years they should have had a plan through the minister of national planning. The minister of national planning should be the one integrating the policies of any government in power at the particular time.</p> <p dir="ltr">“When you go through the detailed presentation and listen to arguments it is difficult to draw conclusions. When you don’t listen to the reasons why you are here in the first place?</p> <p dir="ltr">“That is why it was important for all of us to listen to the arguments and understand the reason why. But let me say this, I am really touched by the presentation and the kind of leadership you have here.</p> <p dir="ltr">“First of all, you are a Nigerian, secondly you want to develop this beautiful country and create job opportunities for your people, and more importantly you want to create an environment where those of us in office will look back and say while I was there I did something for my people, but obviously this is not the case.”</p> <p dir="ltr">He however directed the ministry of solid minerals to marshal the management of the steel company to the senate on Thursday.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I am directing the Ministry of Solid Minerals and Steel to get the management of Ajaokuta Steel Company to be at the Senate 10am Thursday morning.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I am giving a directive. I am not asking a question. The ministry must be represented. We are going to discuss this in the full view of the Nigerian public and we will not leave there until we find solution to Nigeria’s problems.</p> <p dir="ltr">“When we are done, we will proceed to see the Vice President. He is head of the Economic Council.
