We are confident of adding tremendous value to MON and likewise MON will add a huge value to Nipco.”<br /> With a revenue stream of $246,204 billion, ExxonMobil, founded by John D. #Pendulum: A President and Nation at Work

<p dir="ltr"><br> By Dele Momodu </p> <p dir="ltr">Fellow Nigerians,</p> <p dir="ltr">Sometime in April this year, I was a guest on a radio programme on Ghana’s Starr FM. I was asked to assess the pace of development in Ghana under the current administration of President John Dramani Mahama. My perspective on what I considered the great work that President Mahama was doing in Ghana immediately set in motion what became a chain reaction of several media conversations on the performance of President Mahama. Those who felt nothing good could come out of Nazareth dismissed every positive appraisal of the Mahama administration. At this time, the predominant rhetoric was that nothing good was happening in Ghana. His critics and political opponents labeled him incompetent. It was the most malicious misrepresentation of a leader who had taken unprecedented steps in the infrastructural development of his country. It was as if there was a conspiracy to hide the humongous transformation that was unfolding in Ghana.<br> I have lived in Ghana for the past fifteen years. My work as publisher of Ovation International magazine has seen me traveling across all continents of the world within the past twenty years. I know development when I see it. The little I had seen under President Mahama was visible enough to the blind and audible enough to the deaf that truly, this was a nation that had made significant progress from where it was some five to ten years ago. My idea of Ghana under President Mahama was built on the foundation of the work that I saw. But the cynics would have none of it. The discordant tune of cynics and doomsday prophets who saw nothing good in this great African nation challenged us to embark on a fact-finding mission across the various developmental projects of the Mahama administration.<br> A few weeks after my interview with Starr FM, Ovation International established contact with President Mahama’s office and requested an audience with the President. Within a few days, access was granted to our media team to all the various projects nationwide. The journey towards the production of the Ovation International World Exclusive on Ghana began.<br> As our crew covered project to project, they traveled the lengths and breadths of Ghana, conducting interviews with citizens, visiting project sites to see first-hand and to ask questions about these projects. There were times our crew had to travel on the President’s entourage, just to ensure that they captured in detail most of the significant events now documented in this collector’s edition.<br> As we moved from location to location, what we saw was a nation and a government in a hurry to deliver the dividends of democratic governance to its people. As we began to unveil teasers on the projects undertaken by the Mahama administration, the narrative started changing. Those who initially said nothing was being done by the Mahama administration now sought to label the projects as “an artist’s impression”. When that narrative fell flat on its face, they switched to a new melody; this time, the discordant tune was the tale of how the projects were too expensive!<br> But this itself reflects the sheer tragedy of politics with bitterness. There are several lessons to take away from the unfolding scenario in Ghana, the process that produced this historic edition of Ovation International and the steady, resolute focus of President Mahama in the face of impossible odds.<br> First, President Mahama did not hesitate in giving us approval and access to these projects. The simplicity of his style of governance helped collapse the walls of unprecedented bureaucracy that is commonplace around government officials of his caliber. From his residence to his office to the projects we covered nationwide, his remarkably efficient disposition to the business of governance is worthy of emulation.<br> Second, it is a lesson of life that you never know who would appreciate what you are doing. It has taken this special edition of Ovation International to convert many skeptics in Ghana to ardent admirers of what I love to describe as the “Mahama Magic”.<br> Third, President Mahama’s approach to vile criticisms from his political opponents and critics speaks volumes about his personality and character as a perfect gentleman who does not belong to the school of do-or-die politics that has largely become the bane of the African continent. Despite the insults hurled at him, he refuses to take offence. His usual way of responding to his critics is that “When you are not on the seat, you can never imagine what it takes to be the President of a country.”<br> For Ghanaians who have followed the Ovation trajectory over time, long before President Mahama became the vice President of Ghana, we have devoted great attention to Ghana because of the significant socio-political and economic bonds that Nigeria and Ghana share so closely. Lagos set to impose death sentence on kidnappers

Mudashiru Obasa, any person, who kidnaps, abducts, detains, captures or takes another person by any means or tricks with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will commit an offence, and liable on conviction to death sentence.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The bill went through a public hearing on yesterday at the Lateef jakande Auditorium within the Assembly premises with some stakeholders in attendance.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Attempt to kidnap is also criminalised under the bill and it was suggested that such a person would be committed to life imprisonment.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Also, the bill is against false representation to release a kidnapped or abducted person under Section 4,  and this attracts seven years imprisonment.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Furthermore, the bill provides that any person, who knowingly or wilfully allows or permits his premises, building or a place belonging or occupied to which he has control of, to be used for the purposes of keeping a person kidnapped is guilty of an offence under the law and liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment of 14 years without an option of fine.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A legal practitioner, Mr Richard Komolafe from the United Action for Change (UAC), who spoke at the stakeholders meeting, commended the bill but said that death sentence was no longer fashionable all over the world.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Komolafe said:”Hanging itself is inhuman by conventions as against life imprisonment. I appreciate this bill, it is very timely, but we hope it will be passed in time.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He, however, urged the lawmakers to find a way of not getting genuine rescuers from being roped in cases of pretentious kidnap.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Another stakeholder, who is the Director of Legal Drafting in the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Yejide Kolawole, who also commended the bill, said that it was essential that element of conspiracy and attempt to kidnap be added in the bill.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “I suggest 21 years imprisonment for conspiracy to kidnap, depending on the level of involvement. However,  seven years penalty for section 4 is too mild. I suggest  20 years to deter those who would want to engage in the crime.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “On Section 5, anyone who instigates kidnapping should be given a stiffer penalty of 25 years, though the person does not participate overtly in act.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “On Section 7, owners of a building used to aid kidnapping should have a higher punishment than mere forfeiture of property,” she said.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Also, a Chief Magistrate in Lagos State, Mrs Seri Sholebo said that it was fundamental to add conspiracy to kidnapping, stressing that the ministry had not been able to convict offenders on conspiracy since 2011.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Sholebo however, suggested 180 days window for trials of offenders rather than the stipulated 60 days due to anticipated delay in handling the cases.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A Director in the Lagos State Office of Public Defender (OPD), Mr. Borokini Fatai wanted to know what could happen if the trial could not be concluded within 60 days, as he said that a defence counsel could ask for the withdrawal of the matter after the stipulated number of days.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> source: Thenation </div> </div>

N200million for surveillance activities; 3. N200 million and other remaining funds were for operations managed by Taiwo Kareem.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Taiwo Kareem impressed the former NSA with his management of pre and post-election funds. To God be the glory, the two elections were carried out without any loss of life</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “When bomb blast occurred in Lagos on the 25th of June 2014, the NSA was disturbed and told me of his commitment to ensure that such doesn’t reoccur.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “He expressed the grave consequence that the reoccurrence will have not only on Lagos but the economy of the entire country.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “He emphasised the need for local input to complement the activities of security agencies. This is how Sylvan McNamara was introduced.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The EFCC had discovered that Sylvan Mcnamara Limited, allegedly owned by Obanikoro and his sons,   was used to launder the N4.745 billion.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The company, which was incorporated in November 2011 had the following as its directors: a close aide of the ex-minister, Ikenna Ezekwe (700,000 shares) of 51 Simpson Street, Ebute-Metta; Idowu Oshodi (299,000 shares) of 8, Prince Tayo Adesanya Street, Park View Estate, Ikoyi; and Elizabeth Adebiyi (1,000 shares) of 3, Adedoyin Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Ikenna Ezekwe’s account  has been  de-frozen by the EFCC since the slush funds were not traced to him.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Ezekwe has also been removed as the director of the slush company.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A document said: “To set the stage for the use of the company for money laundering, the board of directors on May 7, 2012  passed a resolution that the company should open an account and appointed Mr. Gbolahan Obanikoro, Ikenna Ezekwe, Ms. Theresa Matuluko (Secretary) and Mr. Babajide Obanikoro as the signatories to the account.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “The board added that the signing combination be that any of the signatories can sign alone.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> EFCC claimed that  when it was time to illegally draw the N4.745 billion from ONSA as war chest for Ekiti Governorship poll, ex-minister Obanikoro made the account of Sylvan Mcnamara Limited available and coordinated the disbursement.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Contacted, Obanikoro’s spokesperson, Jonathan Eze, said he was not aware of the development.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Another source close to him, however, said “it is true.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> source: Thenation </div> </div>

Musiliu Obanikoro, handed over $5.377m cash to Governor Ayo Fayose.<br /> <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><br /> He said the cash, which was put in a green military truck by the ex-minister, was given to Fayose in the presence of nine PDP elders.<br /> He listed those who witnessed the collection by Fayose as a former Secretary to the State Government, a senator, two members of the House of Assembly, a former Director-General and others.<br /> Aluko, it was learned, had one-and-a-half hours hostile encounter with Obanikoro.<br /> Upon receiving the large suitcase (box) and a key to open it, he said, Fayose and Obanikoro retired into an inner room of Spotless Hotel for a brief discussion.<br /> Aluko made the revelation during a grilling by the EFCC team against the backdrop of the ongoing probe of how the ex-minister shared the N4.745billion wired to a company linked to him by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).<br /> The N4.685billon was transferred to Sylva McNamara Limited out of which N60million ($5.377m) cash was personally given to Fayose by the ex-minister.<br /> Obanikoro, however, told the EFCC team that he gave Fayose the cash in the presence of PDP elders including Dr. Tope Aluko.<br /> According to a source, Aluko told the detectives: “The ex-minister brought the $5.377million cash to Spotless Hotel for Fayose in a green military trunk. <div class="image-container" itemprop="image"> <img alt="adamu-adamu" class="attachment-full size-full wp-post-image" height="426" src="http://4a7jjc25uykf24u8sd3k8m5n.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/ADAMU-ADAMU.jpg" width="635" /> </div> The federal government has finally re-introduced History as one of the subjects in the nation’s primary and secondary schools’ curriculum, explaining that its introduction as an independent subject and not a mere theme was necessitated by the clamour and concerns by several groups, including the Presidency, National Assembly and other critical stakeholders in the education sector.<br /> The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, had urged delegates to the recent National Council of Education, NCE, to consider the disarticulation of social studies in the current curriculum and re-introduction of History as a subject, adding that leaders in the education sector committed “a mistake” by removing History.<br /> Speaking on Thursday at the flag-off ceremony for the Disarticulation of History from Social Studies Curriculum in Abuja, Adamu stated that the learning of History will enable children in the earliest stage become well enlightened citizens of the society who respect diversity and strive for attainment of the unity of Nigeria as one indivisible entity.<br /> He called on experts involved in the disarticulation exercise to develop curricular objectives and contents that will lead to positive learning outcomes.<br /> “I, therefore, urged all stakeholders, state governments, honorable commissioners of education, schools, teachers, and parents to embrace and key into this development and ensure a proper implementation of the history curriculum when it is finally developed,” he said.<br /> The minister further assured that the federal government was poised to introduce positive changes in education in a way that will enhance the socio-economic development of Nigeria.<br /> His words, “The Federal Ministry of Education recently developed its plan: on Education for Change: A Ministerial Strategic Plan (2016-2019), which contains several initiatives and activities to be executed, including the disarticulation of social studies and reintroduction of the teaching of history in primary and junior secondary schools.”<br /> Adamu disclosed that the plan document was approved by the National Council of Education, NCE, at its 61st Ministerial session of 27th – 30th September, 2016.<br /> “Following this, the National Education Research and Development Council (NERDC), the agency that has the mandate to develop curriculum especially at this level, was directed to start the process of disarticulating history from social studies,” he said, assuring that the different stages for the execution of the project would be pursued vigorously and efficiently to its logical conclusion.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <div class="image-container" itemprop="image" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <img alt="CBN_3" class="attachment-full size-full wp-post-image" height="300" src="http://4a7jjc25uykf24u8sd3k8m5n.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/CBN_3.jpg" width="400" /> </div> <br /> <br /> The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in conjunction with Heritage Bank Plc, yesterday, commenced the process for the disbursement of N930 million to 310 young entrepreneurs under the Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme, YEDP, so as to help address the rising unemployment situation in the country, empower the youths and reactivate the economy.<br /> Speaking at the commencement of the loan disbursements to the beneficiaries, comprising members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, graduates and artisans, the Governor of the CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, disclosed that the YEDP is part of the plan by the CBN and the Federal Government to create over one million direct jobs by 2020.<br /> Emefiele, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Corporate Services Directorate of the CBN, Mr. Suleiman Barau, stated that the aim of the programme was to ensure that the creative energies of the over 64 million Nigerian youths are harnessed to stimulate growth, address restiveness and promote economic development.<br /> He said, “To realize this objective, the CBN in partnership with the NYSC and Heritage Bank began the pilot seven months ago, to inspire and harvest the entrepreneurial abilities of Nigerian youths towards creating over one million direct jobs by 2020.”<br /> “I am pleased to announce the disbursement of funds to the first batch of 310 prospective entrepreneurs under the YEDP, while other applicants are at different stages of completing their loan documentation process.”<br /> Emefiele further stated that the Programme is open to youths of between 18 and 35 years who are serving Corp members, graduates or artisans, while he stated that all youths in this category are eligible to apply and be pre-qualified for training on entrepreneurship before they can access credit lines of up to N3 million at single digit interest rate.<br /> According to him, the programme is premised on the provision of timely and affordable credit to identified youths entrepreneurs with expected multiplier effect on job creation and economic growth.<br /> He added that the YEDP has the potential of becoming the stimulus for job and wealth creation, growth and economic development through improved access to finance for young entrepreneurs.<br /> He also assured the business community that the CBN would continue to provide enabling environment, devise ways and means to grow the real sector towards a self-reliant economy.<br /> Speaking in the same vein, Managing Director, Heritage Bank Plc, Mr. Ifie Sekibo, stated that the beneficiaries would get the fund as soon as certain issues raised by the beneficiaries are addressed.<br /> According to Sekibo, who was represented by Group Executive Director, Lagos and South-West Corporate Banking of Heritage Bank, Mrs. Mary Akpobome, a proper process of disbursement would be done to the benefit and happiness of all parties.<br /> He said, “They will get the money as soon as all those issues they raised are addressed. The money is available. They have been disbursed. CBN has disbursed to the banks. It is now about sorting out whatever the challenges are, and then the funds are now made available.”<br /> Commenting on the process, Sekibo stated that the target was for 1,000 beneficiaries, adding that the initial applicants were 4,000, while there are presently 7,000 applicants waiting.<br /> He said, “We are optimistic that by the time we are done with the initial 1,000, and we go back, we would be able to accommodate as many as are qualified as possible, and obviously expand the amount of money that is needed to do that.”<br /> He, however, declared that the process is going to be reviewed, stating that “for each of the items, you see, when you get an offer letter, if there are any of the line items that are conditions that you have a challenge with, it is obviously going to be reviewed with all parties.”<br /> Also speaking, Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Sule Kazaure, said the YEDP was introduced in March 2016, with the aim of funding the business plans of corps members so as to encourage and motivate others to imbibe the culture of entrepreneurship.<br /> He further stated that the programme was also designed to facilitate access to other funding agencies and sources of support to corps members, while also making it possible for corps members to access Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMES, funds from the CBN through Heritage Bank and other banks wishing to join in the programme.<br /> He urged the beneficiaries of the programme to remain focused, while also ensuring that the loans are paid back to make for extension of the same facilities to other corps members.

We will be paying a visit to the parliament. Africa’s parliaments are not too good; they are not well equipped, their rights are not respected. In fact they are confronted with major bureaucratic bottlenecks by operators in the executive. Government should keep improving on financial resources for an effective parliament.  No country in the world is interested in making parliaments work. Honestly, I don’t envy African MPs giving the state of affairs in their countries. We need to raise awareness of opportunities in Africa rather than disasters. Unfortunately, African ambassadors here in Germany are not helping matters. Limited; Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited; Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Development Company Limited – pleaded guilty to conspiring to launder $15 million.<br /> <br /> Directors of the companies are domestic workers of Waripamowei Dudafa, Jonathan’s special adviser on domestic affairs.<br /> <br /> Patience <a href="https://www.thecable.ng/patience-jonathan-15m-medical-bills" target="_blank"><strong>had previously clarified</strong></a> that the $15m was for her foreign medical bills and other private expenses, and even <a href="https://www.thecable.ng/patience-jonathan-for-going-after-my-money-efcc-is-a-big-thief" target="_blank"><strong>branded the EFCC a big thief</strong></a> for going after her money.<br /> <br /> But in <a href="https://www.thecable.ng/just-patience-jonathan-asks-court-dissolve-serap" target="_blank"><strong>a suit she filed</strong></a> against the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, which had earlier <a href="https://www.thecable.ng/serap-fg-must-prosecute-patience-jonathan-within-7-days" target="_blank"><strong>given the federal government a seven-day ultimatum</strong></a> to prosecute her, Patience explained that she got the money from gifts from people she could not even remember, over a 15-year period.<br /> <br /> “There has been a running battle between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Mrs Jonathan with respect to the release of her legitimately earned funds which were deposited in accounts opened in the names of certain companies by one of her husband’s aides without her authorization,” her attorneys had written to the court, according to SERAP.<br /> <br /> “The funds in question were legitimate gifts from her friends and well-wishers over the last 15 years, which she had been saving in order to utilize to upgrade family businesses and concerns, which had been somewhat dormant by reason of the long period of her husband service as a public officer in Nigeria.<br /> <br /> “The gifts were given in small contributions by several persons, some of whom she cannot even now recall over this period of 15 years sometimes in as small a gift as N250,000 Naira. In order to preserve the value of these funds, which she did not require for any purpose at the time, she changed them into foreign exchange and kept them as cash for a long period in her home safe in Port Harcourt and Abuja.<br /> <br /> “It was when the family home in Otuoke was burnt down by hoodlums under the instigation of political adversaries in 2010 that she began to think about banking these gifts, which had now grown to large sums in United States Dollars. In 2010, she therefore summoned one of her husband’s domestic aids, Waripamo-Owei Emmanuel Dudafa to assist her in opening bank accounts into which the funds could be deposited.<br /> “Unknown to her, the said Dudafa, in a bid to be discreet about the owner of the funds, decided to bank the funds in the names of companies owned by him. When she discovered this, she was constrained to continue with the names of the companies when she was advised that it did not make any difference as to the ownership of the funds since the director of the company would appoint her as sole signatory to the accounts in question.”<br /> <br /> Patience explained that when Dudafa was arrested in 2016 and detained, she had no fear for the funds, as she realised that the funds could not be attributable to him once it was discovered that she was the sole signatory to the said accounts.<br /> <br /> “It was therefore a rude shock to her when she discovered that a no transaction order had been placed on the accounts by the EFCC in the belief that the funds belonged to Dudafa,” she added.<br /> <br /> “She instructed her solicitors to further write to the EFCC to inform them that the funds belong to her and that they formed a part of her legitimate earnings over the last 15 years. Here he is calling into question former President Jonathan's ability to manage an economy that he himself admits generated an impressive growth yet he is praising a President Buhari under whom Nigeria has gone into recession. He was alleged to have facilitated the disbursement of the funds to Mr. Fayose in the build up to the 2014 election in Ekiti through Biodun Agbele, an associate of the governor.<br /> A report by Punch Newspaper on Wednesday said Mr. Obanikoro had owned up to the EFCC on the transfers.<br /> <br /> A source close to the former minister also confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Obanikoro was “cooperating” with the anti-graft commission and had written at least two statements to that effect.<br /> But Mr. Fayose dismissed the report, saying it was the commission’s usual media trial.<br /> <br /> “This project ‘Fayose must be implicated at all cost’ will definitely not put food on the tables of Nigerians and for all I care, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its collaborators can keep running from pillar to post while I keep delivering good governance to Ekiti and its people,” he said.<br /> “We have gone past this stage of media trial, EFCC should rather keep its gun powder dry, when we get to the bridge, we will cross it. They said more than this in the 2006 poultry scam blackmail, despite that, I am the governor today.”<br /> While noting that his reaction to the report was only “to fulfill all righteousness,” the governor said “those who arranged the dramatic and compromised return of Senator Obanikoro to Nigeria obviously did so in continuation of their project ‘Fayose must be implicated at all cost.”<br /> He however said he was not bothered because his election was legitimately funded.<br /> “As far as I am concerned, I am busy here in Ekiti attending to the welfare and well-being of my people. I won’t be distracted,” the governor said.<br /> He said the EFCC should also beam its searchlights on the funding of APC elections.<br /> “Since we are now in the era in which financial assistance from Nigerians to fund elections is being criminalised, the international community, especially those funding EFCC must insist that the commission probes the funding of APC elections before further funds are released to the commission,” he said.<br /> <br /> <b>Share and Comment</b>
