Troops destroy 'ready-to-explode' Boko Haram bomb factory

<p dir="ltr">The Nigeria army says its troops have destroyed a Boko Haram bomb factory at a village in Borno state, where two empty artillery shells and other cartridges with IED and batteries were “ready to explode”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to Sani Usman, army spokesman, the troops also killed nine members of the sect in an operation to clear the village of insurgents.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The troops of 155 task force Battalion, 21 brigade, Nigerian army on Thursday 31st March 2016, during clearance operations discovered and destroyed improvised-explosive-device (IED) factory and  cleared Boko Haram terrorists hide out in Wulwuta village, ahead of Jere, Bama local government area,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“During the operation, the troops  also killed nine Boko Haram terrorists while one of our soldier was wounded in action.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The troops recovered one laptop, one solar panel, a pair of Nigerian military desert and woodland camouflage uniform each, as well as bandolier vest and six ready IEDs pressure plates. Other recoveries include a loaded pistol with registration number D557954, 3 rounds of  7.65mm, 13 rounds of  7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and combat boots, amongst others.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The gallant unit also rescued 21 persons held captives by the terrorists, comprising eight men, four women and nine  children. They have been moved to the brigade headquarters for further care, screening and eventual hand over to the appropriate agencies.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It is significant to state that the ever-vigilant and professional troops noticed that the terrorists were determined to cause maximum casualty on them by stuffing two empty artillery shells and other cartridges with IED and batteries ready to explode. They were however safely detonated by the explosive ordinance device (EOD) team attached to the unit.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It is heart warming to state that the troops morale remains high and fighting efficiency is equally unprecedented.”</p>

Buhari: We’re working to correct our mistakes as a nation

<p dir="ltr">President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is working diligently to correct “our mistakes as a nation”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Speaking in Washington DC on Saturday when he met a group of Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in various professions in the United States, Buhari reiterated his commitment to moving the country forward as rapidly as possible.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He promised to correct the errors that have hindered Nigeria’s progress as a nation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We are determined to get things done properly this time and God willing, we shall succeed,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We are working diligently to correct our mistakes as a nation. We will rehabilitate and expand national infrastructure, and move forward as quickly as possible.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Buhari also said his administration would maintain contact with Nigerian professionals in the Diaspora and see how they could be best placed to contribute effectively to national development if they choose to come back home.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He congratulated the five Nigerians he met with, for their exceptional accomplishments, saying he was very proud of them.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Those the president met are Austin Esogbue, the only African to have served on the board of the United States’ National Aeronautical Space Agency; Jelani Aliyu, a leading car designer with General Motors; Nwadiuto Esiobu, a renowned Microbiologist and Biochemist; Yemi Badero, an assistant professor of medicine; and Zuriel Oduwole, a teenager who has interviewed 18 world leaders.<br>

DSS ‘arrests’ Shekau’s right-hand man in biggest catch made by Nigeria so far

<p dir="ltr">Ahmad Salkida, a journalist known for his access to top Boko Haram commanders, says the Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Khalid Albarnawi, a top leader of the Ansaru sect which recently reunited with Boko Haram. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Ansaru, which was established in 2012, was a splinter group of Boko Haram.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Albarnawi, who is regarded in counter-terrorism circles to be “as important as Abubakar Shekau”, was reportedly arrested in Lokoja, Kogi state, and then transferred on Friday.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He is regarded as the most influential member of Nigeria’s terror network with contacts to other Jihadi groups in north Africa and the middle east.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Salkida said Albarnawi is believed to have reconciled with the leader of Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP), also known as Boko Haram.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In series of messages on Twitter, Salkida described the arrest as one of the greatest feats in the fight against insurgency.</p>

revealed that the station is live on Tune In, an Internet radio airing 
across the world. According to the TheCable, “the radio station has hit 
the airwaves pushing the same message of “freedom of Biafraland” while 
condemning the happenings in Nigeria, regarded as a Zoo. Radio Biafra is
 airing from “30 Sandlings Close, Pilkington Road, London, SE11 3SY 
England, United Kingdom”.</div>

When TheCable tuned in, the anchor, who 
was referred to as the new deputy director of the station, was 
complaining about the state of power and energy resources in the 
country. After receiving a call from Nigeria to complain that the radio 
was not being aired via FM in some parts of south east Nigeria, the 
anchor responded by saying the problem would be resolved.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“There is no problem with our general 
platform, we would look into it tomorrow. We are not forgetting our 
leader, Kanu. Lord God almighty, grant our leader protection. Continue 
to set confusion in the midst of our enemies, grant us total freedom”, 
he said.</div>

Security agents had earlier arrested 
suspected masterminds of Radio Biafra, and charging its leader to court 
for treasonable felony. The signals were also reportedly jammed after 
initial failed attempts, but the station is still broadcasting on the 
world wide web, after months off air.</div>

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Garba Umaru, made the 
observation in a message to the Special Day of the commission at the 
ongoing 27th Enugu International Trade Fair in Enugu on Friday.<br />
According to him, the service providers are suffering untold hardship in
 the country as a result of imposition of taxes and levies.<br />
“Apart from the taxes and levies, the service providers are further 
burdened with regulations that restrict right of way to deploy or expand
 services.<br />
“Even when the service providers are willing to make services available,
 we as members of government at various levels and communities put 
bottlenecks on their way.<br />
The vice chairman was represented by the Director of Publicity, Mr Tony Ojobo.<br />
He said that for the service providers to make services available to 
consumers, they have to build base stations, masts, towers, which were 
challenges they faced.<br />
The NCC boss said that the commission had continued to engage states in 
the South-East to discourage multiple taxations and regulations.<br />
Umaru expressed regrets that vandalising telecom infrastructure was very
 high in the South-East of the country which also contributed to the 
challenges faced by service providers.<br />
He explained that MTN was fined because of failure to register some SIM 
cards, pointing out that it was not a punitive measure but to reduce 
rate of crime like kidnapping and armed robbery.<br />
In his speech, the President of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry,
 Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Rev. Ugochukwu Chime, commended NCC for
 its regular participation in the fair.<br />
Chime explained that the role of NCC as a regulatory agency was to 
ensure the best practices efficient and effective service delivery by 
operators in the sector.<br />
He urged NCC to do more, especially in regulating operators in the sector and protecting vulnerable customers.<br />

The
 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Friday that it
 did not disqualify, Mr Tonye Alalibo, PDP candidate for Akuku-Toru 
Constituency 11, from participating in re-run election in Rivers.<br />

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, 
told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that judgment of 
election tribunal and Court of Appeal excluded the party and its 
candidate from participating in the election.<br />
NAN recalls that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Mr Fredrick 
Anabraba, won the election for the constituency with 2,970 votes.<br />

Ikoiwak explained that two days to the re-run, the commission wrote 
to the state chapter of PDP informing it that the party and its 
candidate had been excluded in the election.<br />
“The decision was taken by the commission in compliance with the 
judgment of the tribunal and that of the Court of Appeal,” he said.<br />

The commissioner said insinuations that the commission deliberately 
disqualified the candidate was false and baseless. He said the courts 
took the decision and INEC complied. Ikoiwak said the commission would 
fix a date for repeat election in the eight local government areas where
 the exercise was cancelled due to irregularities.<br />

President
 Muhammadu Buhari said the recruitment of 10,000 policemen would address
 the challenge of youth unemployment in the country.<br />
The president made the disclosure at a ceremonial parade to mark the 2016 Police Week in Abuja on Friday.<br />
Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Interior, retired 
Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau said the initiative would also address the
 manpower gap in the police.<br />
He advised the management of the police force to put national interest 
in mind in the recruitment in line with the reform agenda of the 
ministry of interior.<br />
“In carrying out this exercise, I expect the Nigeria Police to put national interest in the foremost,” he said.<br />
Buhari said that community policing had become more imperative considering the current security challenges in the country.<br />
He said that it was in view of this that his administration had rested 
the internal security of the country on enhanced budget, addressing 
social factors among others.<br />
The president said that government had funded the procurement of over 
1,000 patrol vehicles and other logistics to strengthen operational 
capacity of the police.<br />
He said that in order to address the challenge of highly organised 
crime, government had strengthened the technical intelligence capacity 
of the police.<br />
“No nation thrives without security, and neither can a nation lay claim to security without an efficient policing service.<br />
“This administration shall continue to support initiatives that will 
guarantee the reform and modernisation of the Nigeria Police. I must 
clearly recognise that the nation expects so much from the police,” he 
said.<br />
He reassured Nigerians of government’s determination to bequeath a 
reformed, re-oriented, well trained, well equipped and highly motivated 
police.<br />
Buhari said that the dream could only be attained with the support of the citizens.<br />
Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase said that 
with the support of the citizens, the police was determined to fight 
criminals who continued to threaten the peace and security of the 
nation.<br />
He commended officers, who in spite of the challenges had continued to display loyalty and zeal to confront internal insurgency.<br />
“We recognise the sacrifice of officers and men who sweat it out under 
the scorching sun, the drizzling rains and the cold nights to stay alert
 in order to ensure the safety and security.<br />
He said that the Police Week was aimed at restoring the lost glory of the Force.<br />
“In essence, the Police Week is a celebration of our history as well as 
an opportunity for the Force to reconnect with the people for a more 
effective policing,” he said.<br />
In attendance were representatives of the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, diplomats, traditional rulers, among others.

<p dir="ltr">Popular actor, Odunlade Adekola, is currently in a foul mood and he has threatened to deal with anybody who tries to truncate his family life by making claims that are not true with his name.</p>
<p dir="ltr">During the week, two actresses, Kemi Afolabi and Seyi Ariyo also known as She Baby, had engaged in a ‘roforofo fight’ over a piece of clothe. Of course, Adekola would have just been an onlooker but both ladies were said to have claimed ‘to be seeing him’ intimately.</p>
<p dir="ltr">She Baby said she had invited Afolabi to star in her movie slated for 10am but the actress did not get to the movie location till 5pm even though she only had three scenes to shoot. Because of her lateness, she had to sleep in a hotel and she insisted that She Baby would foot the bill.</p>
<p dir="ltr">She Baby who was already upset that the actress came to her location late refused to pay the bills, adding that if she had turned up on time, there would have been no need for a hotel accommodation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">For this reason, Afolabi decided to hold on to She Baby’s clothe which she used during the shoot of the movie till she reimbursed her for paying the hotel accommodation. This did not go down well with She Baby and  a catfight ensued. Before long, obscene languages were exchanged via blackberry broadcast messages and the actresses began to accuse each other of dating popular actor, Odunlade Adekola.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, the actor said that he was surprised that his name would be dragged into a matter that does not concern him and warned the actresses to stop using his name for cheap publicity.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said, “I was shocked and enraged when I read in the news that two married actresses were fighting dirty over me. I don’t  know why they would drag my name which I have spent years of hard work to build in the mud just like that. I have no idea why they would even mention my name in the matter and the first thing that came to my mind was to contact my lawyers and sue them for defamation but I decided against it because it would turn into another scandal.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“I am a happily married man with children and I wonder why either of them would make such damaging statement. Nothing like an amorous relationship exists between me and any of them. In fact, I have only had a one-on-one encounter with Seyi Ariyo about two times and I doubt we have seen each other in the industry up to four times. So, where did such claims come from? They are just using my name for cheap publicity probably to make their movie popular but why would they want to do such at the expense of my family’s happiness? I implore these ladies to stop using my name for cheap publicity and face their craft. If such happens again I may be forced to involve my lawyers in the matter.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">When Saturday Beats reached out to She Baby, she was furious that Adekola threatened to sue her. The actress did not only call his bluff, she denied using his name for publicity stunt.</p>
<p dir="ltr">She said angrily, “I don’t have any reaction to his statement but if he feels he wants to involve his lawyers in the matter, then he should do that. Did I drag his name into the matter? Did I mention his name? I have not granted any interview on this issue and all I have told everyone that has called me about the matter is that the issue has been resolved and I have got my clothe back. What publicity stunt is Adekola talking about? I never mentioned his name; why should I mention his name when he did not appear in the movie. It had absolutely nothing to do with him.”</p>

FRSC Releases Easter Statistics Of Road Accidents

<p dir="ltr">Total of 77 persons lost their lives and 358 persons were injured in over 90 road accidents across the country in six days, during the Easter period according to the FRSC.<br>
 The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, released the statistics in Abuja on Friday.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said these figures represent a 9% reduction in the deaths recorded over the same period in 2015, 23% reduction in the number of injured persons and 32% reduction in road accidents over the same period last year.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Urging Nigerians to exercise increased caution as the rainy season approaches, he said that the campaign for the use of rear seat belts as well as speed limits for commercial drivers are being intensified as these have impacted positively in the reduction of road accidents recorded so far.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Following the loss of a senior official of the commission who was killed during the Easter break, the Corps Marshal also threatened to press for criminal charges for further assault on officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said that they would henceforth involve the Police and the Justice Ministry to ensure maximum sentence for such assault against their men.</p>

 Mr Kayode Fayemi on Friday, addressed officials at the National Defense College in Abuja, the nation’s capital.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The Nigerian security landscape, whether we like it or not, is ravaged partly by poverty which brought about insecurity.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“If you grow a sector that has the capacity to also produce jobs in abundance to the populace, clearly, they will feel safe and secure; the sense of self worth is enhanced, the sense of dignity is improved and they begin to contribute as active citizens through the security landscape of the nation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Contributing through the security landscape of the nation is really why we must grow this sector and not continue to depend on oil and gas which has contributed its own to our economy and will continue to do so.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“But I think it’s about time that we got on to diversifying our revenue base and mining is one of those options just as agriculture, information technology and the services sector. That’s the security connection between peace and development,” Fayemi said.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The special adviser on media and publicity to president Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, has gone on the offensive again with the ‘wailing wailers’–a phrase he had coined to describe the army of opposition against Muhammadu Buhari just weeks into the life of the current administration.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adesina who was speaking on The Osasu Show, defended the president for not visiting Agatu in Benue State, where hundreds of Nigerians had been slain by Fulani herdsmen. Adesina said visiting scenes of terror or killing fields isn’t the president’s style.</p>
<p dir="ltr">President Buhari had come in for plenty of stick for not visiting Agatu and for not publicly speaking to condemn the attack.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Some people kept saying Agatu, Agatu, he has not spoken, and I asked myself, what else would he say after the statement that has been issued?”, asked Adesina.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We are used to the style of the last administration in which whenever anything happens, the president would go there. But do you know that before that last president left, that style had begun to backfire?</p>
<p dir="ltr">“They had begun to say, every day he would go there, he would go here, what comes out of it?”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adesina fought back insinuations that Buhari is getting increasingly disconnected from the people.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It’s not true. It’s a perception, and those who have the perception, there’s nothing you’d do that will satisfy them.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“When anything happens and the presidency has spoken on it, anybody who wants to remain deaf to it, there’s then nothing that can be done.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adesina said visiting terror sites or victims of terror as Jonathan occasionally did, isn’t the only way.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It doesn’t have to be that way. There are many ways to kill a snake. Going there to visit is not the only way.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“In nine months, see the difference that has been made in the insurgency war. How many times did you see the president at the theatre of war…but see the difference that has been made. Results are what matter.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said the president is naturally taciturn and isn’t about to change. “A section of this country wants a talkative president and it doesn’t work that way. When the Agatu thing happened, we issued a statement – a statement in which President Buhari said he would ask for briefings, and it would be looked into.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adesina wouldn’t end the interview without laying into the ‘wailing wailers’, though.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The wailing wailers, you’d see that I used that expression not quite a month or two into the life of the administration,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Now, how will a new administration…and maybe whenever the president says something, you just start hearing noise, wah, wah, wah, wah, like a child whose lollipop has been taken away.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“They didn’t want to give an opportunity for the government, and that was why I said why are they wailing like wailers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Mr president has no other things he does than to serve Nigeria. What can the people do? The people can support him; the wailing wailers should stop wailing and rather begin to encourage.”</p>

Pendulum: A DRIVE THROUGH THE FORESTS OF A THOUSAND DAEMONS – @DeleMomodu

<p dir="ltr">Fellow Nigerians, I’m not sure how many of you know or remember the famous Yoruba novelist, Daniel Oroleye Fagunwa. If you’re Yoruba, and attended school when education was still well-rounded, you are likely to be quite familiar with that mystical author of epic literature and magical reality. Who has not read or heard of the rambunctious narration and gripping description in Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmole, translated many years later by the master prose-stylist and certainly the greatest brutaliser of English language on earth, Wole Soyinka, as the ‘Brave Hunter in the Forest of a Thousand Daemons’.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Though fictional, this forest actually exists in the imagination and full consciousness of Fagunwa’s kinsmen. Before the coming and arrival of Nollywood, Fagunwa had painted a vivid picture of the ubiquitous spirits that parade those movies we all love to watch. Igbo Irunmole or Oke Lamgbodo is truly situated somewhere in a border town between Ondo and Osun States, in the South West of Nigeria. If Nigeria was truly serious about tourism, Oke-Igbo would have become a destination of choice for tourists. The novels of Fagunwa would have been hyped even beyond the level of ‘100 Years of Solitude’ by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and read globally with relish.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Anyway, the long and short of my preamble is that I drove through Ondo State yesterday and I could not but remember Fagunwa, whose personal life trajectory was as mysterious and superstitious as the characters he portrayed in his novels. At the time of his death, he was said to have disappeared while stretching his legs during a break from a long journey. His body has never been found.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Thus I’m endlessly fascinated by Ondo State. I researched and wrote one of my biggest covers on Fagunwa during my stint as staff writer at the then African Concord in 1988. I bought and read most of Fagunwa’s works mainly Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmole, Aditu Olodumare, Igbo Eledumare, Irinkerindo Ninu Igbo Elegbeje and Ireke Onibudo. All these works flooded my memories as we drove through Ondo State yesterday on the way to our final destination.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I had landed in Lagos from London a few minutes past 5.00am yesterday morning in the company of two friends. Mercifully our luggage came out promptly and we were elated. That was just the beginning of our journey, Prince Damola Aderemi, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi and I drove towards Ikeja GRA. While Tokunbo excused himself, the Prince of Ile-Ife and I chose to travel on a long-winding journey to Kabba in the North Central Kogi State. What should have been a pleasurable adventure soon became a misadventure. Wow, my God, we started seeing samples of what to expect from Maryland Lagos where the queues for petrol had led to some horrendous traffic conundrum. The confusion and chaos brought to mind the great challenges faced by the Change agent, Minister for Petroleum Resources and President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari and his able Minister of State and Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, in forging a new progressive path for our petroleum industry. We managed to navigate our way through that and drove towards Lagos-Ibadan Expressway which sadly was far from being the fast highway it was designed to be. We meandered through that frustrating traffic and snaked our way slowly trying to dodge gaping potholes and gullies.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Our journey past the Lagos Ibadan Expressway and into Oyo and Osun States was uneventful. We stopped by Oduduwa University Ile-Ife, founded by Dr Ramon Adedoyin to meet up briefly with our friend, Mr Yomi Adenuga.<br>
We then had the choice of which direction to take to get to Kogi State. It turned out that we took the longer route but it was an eye opener for several reasons.<br>
Our next challenge was how to refill our tanks intermittently. We saw mostly empty stations, over-congested ones and we came eyeball to eyeball with the cruelest of Shylocks who brazenly and boldly tuned and kept their meters at N200 per litre. It was so incredible. At a stage we decided enough was more than enough and I came down to engage some petrol attendants at a particularly notorious station near Akure. First I used my smartphone to take pictures. Thereafter, I sought out the manager who had become incommunicado by hiding after I couldn’t succeed in persuading his guys about reducing the atrocious pricing. The manager eventually appeared but denied himself the way Peter denied Jesus. I played a fast one on him by saying his folks had pointed him out to me and he then owned up. I told him I was ready to phone Abuja and get the place shut. Shaking like jelly, he quickly called the owner of the place.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Trust me, we were very patient. The director begged me to take it easy with him. He reeled out details of all the esoteric process he had to go through to get his allocation and I actually pitied him. I’m practical enough to know the Nigerian system can’t and won’t change overnight no matter the sermons being preached by APC operatives. We reached an agreement that he would reverse the meter to the normal price and we can then all pretend that all was well while negotiating individual rates subject to class and status. I was told some people were ready to pay N500 per litre. Well, well, well. That’s my wonderful country, a land of opportunities overflowing with milk and honey if you can squeeze or dig deep enough. Don’t ask me how much we paid eventually. I’m sure life continued as normal at this particular filling station as soon as we left.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We drove past Ilara Mokin, home town of business Titan, Chief Michael Ade Ojo, Chairman of Elizade Group and founder of the Elizade University described as one the best private tertiary institutions in Nigeria. We also saw the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) as we passed. We took the turning which bypassed the town of Akure. My mind raced back to the year 1983 and the conflagration that razed down many properties and killed some politicians and their supporters in old historical town.  I wished I could drop by to say hello to the Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and his hospitable wife Yeye Olukemi Mimiko, to chitchat about politics and the state of the nation. Despite our heated disagreement over his crossing over to PDP, we have remained friends and I actually love some of his progressive projects, especially his pet health project.<br>
We moved on towards Owo and it brought back tears of nostalgia while remembering the number of times I visited my boss, Chief Akin Omoboriowo, at Owo Prison during the first coming of Major General Muhammadu Buhari. Politicians were hauled into detention and it was a period total confusion. I was barely 23 then but gained immense experience and exposure. We drove towards the Akoko axis and noted Akungba, the hometown of late Ondo State Governor, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, that immortalized the name of Chief Adekunle Ajasin with a State University. We saw the picturesque hills of Ikare-Akoko but sadly the Federal roads were in sordid states of disrepair. Only if these roads were good, internal tourism would have been a regular pastime like it is in the United States. Shame!</p>
<p dir="ltr">Of course, we drove through Oyin Akoko and I remembered the former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero and his younger brother, my mentor, Professor Sunday Ehindero and their niece Bose Ehindero who have ancestral links to the place. We soon crossed backed into Ekiti State via Omuo Here the road was beautiful and it was like Eldorado as we saw firsthand the salutary work on road rehabilitation and construction carried out by Dr Kayode Fayemi as Governor of Ondo State. However, our excitement was short-lived as we curved into Kogi State. The roads degenerated into more of the same bad stuff that we had witnessed earlier. What struck me though, was how people built beautiful mansions in run down towns and villages, what I love to call living in expensive ghettos.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The road towards Kabba nearly dismantled the bolts of my body. I even pitied the convoy of cars we rode in as they slapped their tummies on stony slabs after giant boulders. When the road seemed endless, we saw the first sign that we were entering Kabba. We had come all the way from Lagos for the funeral of our friend, Ralph Lewu’s mum, Deaconess Veronica Ebunoluwa Lewu. At the time we left Lagos, the Virgin Atlantic plane that brought us had not yet boarded its return passengers to London Heathrow. We had said Bon voyage to Princess Kemi Aderemi, my friend’s wife, who was on the flight to London. You won’t believe she landed long before we arrived Kabba was even already approaching their home in Milton Keynes before we got to Kabba. By the time we eventually got to Kabba at dusk, the whole formal event was over. Happily, it was not all labor lost as Raph had a night party afterwards in his country home where we were able to relax after such an arduous journey.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I want to just show you the suffering we have to endure as Nigerians and say I do not envy our President. Where will President Buhari and his team indeed start from? The cross is very heavy.</p>

A woman my friend introduced to me lured
 me into it. The woman linked me up with some men in business and in 
politics. The first man I was introduced to told me that having anal sex
 would fetch me good fortune and I would be bold to challenge anybody no
 matter his social status. He said that if I wanted to be rich and be 
likable, I should join the club of gays. He said that I would meet 
influential people and they would be attracted to me. Also, I was told 
that if I ask for anything, without hesitation, my demands would be 
obliged. He said whenever I speak, I would be feared and my wish would 
obeyed. That was six years ago. He made love to me during political 
campaigns and gave me N150,000. I bought a parcel of land with that 
money but later sold it.</div>

<b><i>How old are you now and what has been your experience?</i></b></div>

I am 36 years old. As I said earlier, I 
have been in this business (anal sex act) for six years. But all that I 
was promised did not come to pass. The business has robbed me of my 
senses and personality. Big men patronize us, but the business is not 
worth it. The same big men that patronize and give us big money, somehow
 through diabolical means, snatch the same money from us. They make love
 to us and give us big money but we never really benefit from the money.
 I have often regretted being a gay but I cannot help it. I sometimes 
ask myself what are the benefits derivable from this act? Nothing at 
all! My earlier plan was that I would work as a gay, get huge amount of 
money and settle down with a beautiful wife. But I was unable to use the
 proceeds to do anything worthwhile or live a comfortable life. But that
 has not come to be after all. I have gained over N9 million as proceeds
 from this act but cannot account for it. The wealthy in the society 
only use us as mistresses and abandon us at the end. Although some of us
 are being courted by powerful men in the society, but they discard us 
like worthless rag in the long run after satisfying themselves.</div>

homosexual. I found myself in a precarious situation because my 
colleagues might kill me if I dared to leave the business. We are

was betrothed to a man in Yobe who eventually abandoned me. After that 
experience I decided not to have a permanent partner.</div>

Each client at the local level in Yola 
pays between N10,000 and N12,000 per sex session. We don’t charge 
clients that are wealthy. We don’t charge the politicians because they 
are always ready to pay more than we ordinarily would have charged. A 
politician or a businessman can pay from N150,000 to N200,000 per sex 
session. The elite know what they derive from us sexually, which is not 
known to us.</div>

<p dir="ltr">Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram sect, has denied calling for a truce, saying his men will never surrender to the military.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In a video that went viral last week, Shekau was reported to have asked his followers to sheathe their swords, surrender and embrace peace.</p>
<p dir="ltr">However, the defence headquarters (DHQ) warned the public not to be deceived by the video, saying the military would continue with its operations against insurgents in spite of the purported remorse.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“This is my desire: that whoever sees this will hear nothing but greetings between me and you. Only Allah knows the rest, as you believed (and) as you submitted. For me the end has come,” he had said in the seven-minute video.</p>
<p dir="ltr">But in a new video released on Friday, Shekau took an entirely different turn.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“This war between us will not stop. You should know that there is no truce,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“There is no negotiation; there is no surrender. This war between us will not stop.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Shekau, whose whereabouts is unknown, has formed the habit of using footage to pass his message across.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He is among 100 members of the sect, which the Nigerian army declared wanted in October.</p>

Fire razes another market in Kano

<p dir="ltr">Another fire outbreak gutted Gwarzo market in Gwarzo local government area of Kano state on Thursday, destroying property worth millions of naira.</p>
<p dir="ltr">A witness told NAN that the incident occurred around 1 am.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said the inferno destroyed the entire furniture section of the market before it was put out by men of the fire service.</p>
<p dir="ltr">When contacted Mustapha Rulwan, director of the state’s fire service, confirmed the incident.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said the fire started around 1:45 am and destroyed 30 shops in the furniture section of the market.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We got the report of the incident around 1:45 am and our men in Gwarzo office were able to quench the fire around 3:25 am today (Friday),” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Our preliminary investigation indicated that the fire spread to the shops and other places when some traders attempted to burn sawdust.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Rulwan warned people to take precautionary measures while using fire.</p>

At G20 seminar, Adeosun seeks inclusive growth for Africa

<p dir="ltr">Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, called for sustainable and inclusive growth for Africa at a high level G20 finance ministers seminar held in Paris, France capital, on Thursday.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The ministers met to discuss current challenges to the international financial architecture and ways of combating macroeconomic volatility.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The high level seminar also assessed volatility in capital flows and their impact on global economic conditions.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Speaking at the opening plenary session, Adeosun acknowledged the progress that has been made in the international financial architecture since the 2008 global financial crisis.</p>
<p dir="ltr">She noted that the first line of defence is sound macroeconomic policies, which Africa in general and Nigeria specifically, is trying to tackle with a series of fiscal housekeeping initiatives.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adeosun said there had been excessive focus on GDP as a measure of economic progress, which often concealed vulnerabilities, particularly inequalities.</p>
<p dir="ltr">She called for a more holistic measure of economic growth, highlighting the risks associated with international capital flows.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The minister said there was need for African economies to be insulated from the disruptive effects of volatile short term portfolio flows.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Africa can build the necessary resilience, but there must be more careful management of capital flows and a move towards long term and sustainable growth,” she said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adeosun said an essential component of more careful management of capital flows was to build better economic mapping and surveillance to manage risks and spill-overs, which she said should be a priority for G20 finance ministers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">She called for more understanding and flexibility for Africa to grow and protect key markets, as developed countries had done while at Africa’s current stage of development.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adeosun highlighted the need for long term partnerships and foreign direct investment into African economies to deliver the necessary investment, particularly in infrastructure, to unlock sustainable growth.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The meeting was called at the request of China, which is chairing the G20 in 2016, and aims to make reform of the world’s financial architecture a top priority.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Those in attendance were Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF); François Villeroy de Galhau, governor of the Banque de France; Valdis Dombrovkis, vice-president of the European Commission; and Wolfgang Schauble, minister of finance, Germany.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Others are Michel Sapin, minister of finance and public accounts, France; Wolfgang Schäuble, minister of Finance, germany; George Osborne,  chancellor of the Exchequer, United Kingdom; Pietro Carlo Padoan, minister of economy.</p>

<p dir="ltr">“A section of this country wants a talkative president and it doesn’t work that way. When the Agatu thing happened, we issued a statement – a statement in which President Buhari said he would ask for briefings, and it would be looked into,” Adesina said in an interview with Osasu Igbinedion on The Osasu Show.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Some people kept saying Agatu, Agatu, he has not spoken, and I asked myself, what else would he say after the statement that has been issued.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We are used to the style of the last administration in which whenever anything happens, the president would go there. But do you know that before that last president left, that style had begun to backfire.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“They had begun to say, every day he would go there, he would go here, what comes out of it?”</p>
<p dir="ltr">When told that the president is disconnected from the people who may be in need of empathy, Adesina said: “It’s not true. It’s a perception, and those who have the perception, there’s nothing you’d do that will satisfy them.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“When anything happens and the presidency has spoken on it, anybody who wants to remain deaf to it, there’s then nothing that can be done.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">Speaking on visits to Boko Haram victims as done under former president, Goodluck Jonathan, Adesina said it does not have to be that way.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It doesn’t have to be that way. There are many ways to kill a snake. Going there to visit is not the only way.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“In nine months, see the difference that has been made in the insurgency war. How many times did you see the president at the theatre of war…but see the difference that has been made. Results are what matter.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">WAILING WAILERS SHOULD STOP WAILING</p>
<p dir="ltr">Adesina also likened “wailing wailers” to kids whose lollipop had been taken, calling on them to stop wailing and support the president in attaining enduring change.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The wailing wailers, you’d see that I used that expression not quite a month or two into the life of the administration,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Now, how will a new administration…and maybe whenever the president says something, you just start hearing noise, wah, wah, wah, wah, like a child whose lollipop has been taken away.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“They didn’t want to give an opportunity for the government, and that was why I said why are they wailing like wailers.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Mr president has no other things he does than to serve Nigeria. What can the people do? The people can support him; the wailing wailers should stop wailing and rather begin to encourage.”<br>

 Governor Fayose, in a statement, said that the President should concentrate more on tackling the economic challenges in the country.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“It remains a mystery that President Buhari met power generation at 6,000mw but today it has dropped to 2,695mw”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Governor insisted that what should be of interest to the President should be the suffering of Nigerians rather than what he calls junketing around the world.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“This is not acceptable. Mr President should stay at home and see to it that at least, power generation returns to 6,000MW that he met it if he cannot add to it.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Mr President should stay at home and bring this fuel scarcity that has paralysed almost all activities in the country to an end.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Nigerians are saying their president should stay at home and bring to an end the killings, raping of women and destruction of farmlands by Fulani herdsmen.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Most importantly, the President should listen more to those of us who criticise him instead of those hailing every of his wrong steps either because of what they intend to gain or for fear of persecution,” the Governor said.</p>

 Mr. Frank made the announcement in Abuja on Thursday while addressing the media. He explained that were internal disputes that risk tearing the party apart.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“If anybody should tell you there’s no division even at the national level, they’re telling lies. I can tell you there are issues; there are very critical issues,” Mr. Frank said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He cited the controversy surrounding Senate President Bukola Saraki as one source of party infighting.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The issue of the Senate President is still lingering; nobody is saying anything at the national level, but I tell you, any Nigerian that knows will tell you very clearly that with the body language of our party as of today, if we are not careful, we are going to lose popularity,” he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">However, APC National Secretary Mai Mala Buni dismissed the spokesman’s allegations, describing them as “bogus.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The bogus and misleading allegations are unnecessary distractions to the party’s resolve to fully support President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to deliver on the motley promises made by our great party to the electorate,” he stated.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Mr. Buni emphasized that the APC remains united and is undergoing efforts to further strengthen the party’s cohesion.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Recently, the APC held its National Caucus and National Executive Committee meetings where positive and far-reaching decisions were collectively taken by the party’s leadership to drive the party forward.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">He added that Mr. Frank is not the official voice of the APC, and that only the APC National Chairman and National Secretary have the authority to speak on behalf of the party</p>

<p dir="ltr">South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma apologizes to the nation and welcomes the Constitutional Court ruling around the Nkandla scandal.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Saying he would pay back the “identified” money and that he “never knowingly set out to violate the constitution”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He added that there was no deliberate intention to subvert the constitution on his part.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This comes after opposition parties called for the President's immediate impeachment just yesterday when the Constitutional Court found that he and Parliament did not uphold the Constitution when they disregarded the public protector's findings.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Constitutional Court had also found that Zuma would have to pay for the upgrades at his Nkandla home.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Immediately after his address, the ANC's Secretrary General, Gwede Mantashe also responded to the court's judgement, stating the top six in the ANC unanimously backed Zuma and added that they welcome and appreciate the President's apology to the nation.</p>

Air Force To Assist Navy In Monitoring Niger Delta Creeks

<p dir="ltr">The Nigerian Air Force says it will soon release a maritime patrol aircraft that will assist the Navy in tackling the growing insecurity in Niger delta creeks.<br>

There have been recent reports of pipeline vandalism in the region, a situation the Federal Government said had affected electricity supply.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sedick Abubakar, told reporters in Calabar that the Air Force would also continue to work round the clock in collaboration with other security agencies in a bid to end insurgency in the North East region.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Air Marshal Abubakar was in Calabar on a maiden visit to 207 Special Mobility Group of the Nigerian Air Force.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to him, military efforts to end the activities of Boko Haram sect were gaining ground, as security agencies were at the tail end of the operation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He had told reporters in Benin few days ago that the military was in the last phase of ending the activities of the terrorists group.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Addressing reporters in Calabar on Friday he said that economic activities had resumed in the northeast, stating that the development clearly showed that stability had been substantially restored, even though isolated cases of suicide bombings are still ongoing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Air Force boss, who took out time to commission some buildings at the Calabar Command Base also took his team on a visit to the Obong of Calabar.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At the palace, the Obong sued for recognition of the traditional institution by the Federal Government in order to ensure that a better synergy existed between the people and security agencies for effective curbing of crime in their respective states and its environs.</p>

According to a statement by his Senior 
Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, the 
Vice-President spoke while receiving a delegation of his Law Faculty 
class mates with whom he attended the University of Lagos between 1975 
and 1978.</div>

He also promised that all efforts would 
be put in place to ensure that Nigeria makes good progress under the 
current administration.</div>

“The President and I are determined to 
give a good account of ourselves and more importantly ensure that the

guests.</div>

He said Nigeria had a unique

 fuel scarcity bites harder across the country, the Nigerian Labour 
Congress (NLC) on Wednesday said the current scarcity was deliberate to 
create different options such as privatization and promote the interests
 of the business community.</div>

It accused the federal government of 
using the backdoor to create artificial scarcity in order to throw up 
options that fit into its planned privatization strategy, a move the NLC
 said was not in the best interest of Nigerians.</div>

NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, in 
an exclusive interview explained that the on-going fuel scarcity is a 
big disappointment and shame to the government, and failure on its 
earlier promises.</div>

Wabba said: “It is deliberate to create 
scarcity, the present situation has remained. This particular scarcity 
is deliberate; government has no taken a proactive action to stop 
scarcity, so it’s deliberate. They have not done enough to prevent this

FIFA,
 the world’s football governing body has banned Ivory Coast and 
Sunderland defender Emmanuel Eboué for one year. FIFA passed the 
judgement on the former Arsenal defender this morning for refusing to 
pay his agent for agent fees owed.</div>
This means won’t be able to play football for 360 days effective from
 this morning until the fee is completely paid. The ban will be lifted

”Emmanuel Eboué, who has represented Côte 
d’Ivoire and is currently registered for the English club Sunderland 
A.F.C., is to serve a ban on taking part in any football-related 
activity that will last for one year or until he pays the total

occurs before the one-year ban has elapsed.” The origins of the case 
involve a decision passed by the single judge of the FIFA Players’ 
Status Committee in July 2013 regarding a contractual dispute according 
to which Mr Eboué was ordered to pay the players’ agent Mr Sébastien 
Boisseau an amount owed to him based on the representation agreement 
between the two parties.</blockquote>

The decision was taken on the basis of the 
FIFA Players’ Agents Regulations in force at the time (2008 edition). 
”On 9 September 2014, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to 
sanction Mr Eboué with a fine of CHF 30,000 for failing to comply with 
the decision of the single judge of the Players’ Status Committee on the
 basis of art. 64 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The player was also 
granted a final period of grace of 120 days to settle his debt, upon 
failure of which the creditor – Mr Boisseau – would be entitled to 
request that a one-year ban on taking part in any football-related 
activity be imposed on Mr Eboué.”</blockquote>

Mr Eboué appealed to CAS against the FIFA 
Disciplinary Committee’s decision, but the appeal was dismissed and the 
decision of the Disciplinary Committee confirmed in full. ”Following the

Health Minister Says Focus Is On Radical Restructuring Of Health Sector

<p dir="ltr">Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, says the government is focusing on a radical restructuring of the healthcare system to ensure that all Nigerians have access to good healthcare. <br>
 Professor Adewole told Channels Television on Friday that regulations would also be strengthened.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“One of the things we want to do is to restructure the regulation,” he said, emphasising that there were reflections of corruption within the system.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We are prepared to tackle it.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We are looking at a situation where every Nigerian will be able to access healthcare within five kilometre radius but what that implies is that we need to do a radical restructuring of the health system.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“In the last four months, we decided to do a diagnosis and developed a proposal to address universal health coverage and we submitted it to the President who sent it for external review and the reviewers turned in positive report on this. He asked us to do a few things to adjust it and make sure that we develop a sustainable structure for this new health plan.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Initially our plan was to target about 43 million Nigerians but the Vice President said it was not enough,” the Minister stated.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Pro-poor Health System</p>
<p dir="ltr">He quoted the Vice President as saying that “an administration that is committed to targeting poor people must look beyond 43 million people”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“If you look at the World Bank indicators, about 80 to 100 million Nigerians are considered as poor so a health system that will be pro-poor should target about 100 million people.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We went back to the drawing board and came out with this Primary Healthcare System per political ward. The political ward comprises of 10,000 people and when we target 10,000 Primary Health Centres, we are looking at 100 million people,” Professor Adewole explained.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He also stated that the government was looking at making health insurance compulsory to ensure that people buy into the scheme, assuring Nigerians that the number of ailments that the scheme would cover would increase as more persons buy into it.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Padded Health Ministry’s Budget</p>
<p dir="ltr">On the budget of the ministry that was said to have been padded, the Minister said he could not defend the budget at the National Assembly because the figures he saw did not reflect the thinking of the present administration.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“What I was presented with on the floor of the National Assembly was at variance with what we submitted. I think some errors were committed somewhere along the line and this had been admitted by quite a number of people.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“This administration is committed to addressing the imbalance and inequity within the health system and we are quite committed to putting things right.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“In preparing the budget, we were quite conscious of the promise that the party made to Nigerians. We wanted to reposition the health of Nigerians and place public health at the forefront of our health agenda,” he stressed.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Pointing out the alterations he may have noticed, he said that the budget presented to the National Assembly had no allocation made to public health and family health.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“The implication is that we will not be able to buy vaccine for our children or buy anti-retroviral drugs,” he stated.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Minister further told Channels Television that it was difficult to determine those that were responsible for the alteration, but assured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari had promised that “those who did it would be flushed out and dealt with. I am sure that is ongoing”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Funding Vaccines</p>
<p dir="ltr">Giving his opinion on why provision should be made for vaccines in the budget, Professor Adewole said “vaccines are necessities with economic importance. For each dollar that you invest in vaccine your get about $16 in return”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said that since the United State was withdrawing from the funding of anti-retroviral drugs, the Nigerian government is committing some funds to the business, increasing funding and getting better commitment.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“That is why for the first time in three years we are recommending funding of anti-retroviral medication and procurement of test kits.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We cannot put you on anti-retroviral therapy if you have not been confirmed to be HIV positive.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“We are part of an initiative called 90:90:90. Between now and 2020 we plan to test 90 per cent of Nigerians and to ensure that 90 per cent of those that tested positive are placed on anti-retroviral to help ensure that 90 per cent of those on anti-retroviral drugs witness viral suppression,” he explained, saying that the suppression technically means that the patient is ‘cured’.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“That does not imply that it is completely gone but it is a proxy of how effective the therapy has been,” the Minister stressed.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Medical Tourism</p>
<p dir="ltr">On medical tourism, the Minister said that about one million dollars was estimated to be involved on a yearly basis, a situation he said drains Nigeria’s resources.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said that the government was looking at medical tourism as an isolated case and the repositioning of the entire system in a way the nation would get value.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Minister also decried some practices by some persons in the sector, which he said were quite suspicious.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“As a minister, I sign some of these request for funding and yesterday (Thursday) I made a pronouncement that under our beat, we will not allow Nigeria’s resources to be used for cases that could be treated in Nigeria.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">He gave instances of requests that had been submitted to his ministry, with outrageous figures that were far beyond the cost of treating a particular ailment in Nigeria.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He told Channels Television that he had received a request for 10 million Naira for an ailment that could be treated in Nigeria for 150,000 Naira.</p>
<p dir="ltr">To address the issue, the Minister said that he was pushing for a policy that would ensure that before payment would be made for certain ailments, a referral letter from a hospital in Nigeria would be required, indicating that such ailment could not be treated in Nigeria.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He emphasised that the government would not allow such corrupt practices to continue.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Asked when Nigerians would begin to feel the impact of the government efforts to revitalise the health sector, he said that the government would revitalise 50 per cent of the Primary Health Centres in 2016</p>
