Crisis is imminent in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State over alleged plan by Governor Abiola Ajimobi to impose aspirants on the electorate for the local government election next month..
THE alleged imposition of councillorship and chairmanship aspirants by the governor, it was gathered in Ibadan on Saturday that it had created cracks within the ruling party.
The planned imposition might led to the non-conduct of primary election that was fixed for last week Saturday.
It was gathered that several members and chieftains of the party were not happy with the governor for the unilateral decision, they believe, that this portends great danger for the party.
One of the aggrieved members who pleaded anonymity for fear of being victimised told newsmen that the move, if not checked, would definitely lead to the party’s defeat in the council election and subsequently in future elections.
According to the impeccable source, all members of the party except the governor are at a loss as what the future holds for the party.
“We don’t know what is happening now in the party. It is a pity we found ourselves in this situation. There was supposed to be primary election for the councillorship aspirants at the weekend and later for chairmanship aspirants but it never came up.
“The governor seems not to be interested in the primaries,” the source said.
When asked why the governor wanted to disallow primaries, the source said the governor was afraid that his own loyalists popularly called “SENACO” meaning Senator Ajimobi Campaign Organization, may lose out because the second group who are loyalists of late Alhaji Lamidi Adesina, a former governor are more popular in the party.
The source said, “the governor wants to kill the party completely. There are several loyalists of late Adesina who have been sidelined since the assumption of office of Governor Ajimobi but are only waiting for the local government election and if candidates are imposed, what do you think will happen”.
“If the governor does not rescind his decision, it is evidently clear that there will be massive exodus of members from the party. No one can face the governor to challenge him because he has cowed everybody to submission now.”
“Though, we expected it but we never thought it could be as bad as this. If care is not taken, all efforts and energy we have dissipated in building the party would be wasted.”.
“It is our joy that many defectors joined our party. But, now all people who defected to the party are on their own now. What hope do they have in getting any political appointment when hundreds of party members don’t have anything. It is a serious problem”.
When contacted, the State chairman of the party, Chief Oke declined to make any comments on the issue.
Also, other chieftains of the party refused to comment on the matter.
