South Africa <span data-term="goog_33032639" tabindex="0"><span class="aqj">on Tuesday</span></span>
 banned a Holocaust-denying, anti-gay American pastor from entering the 
country, after an outcry from rights groups over his characterisation of
 gays as “sodomites” and “paedophiles”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Steven Anderson, who in 2009 infamously 
prayed for US President Barack Obama’s death, had planned a 
“soul-winning” visit to South Africa at the weekend.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba 
declared the Christian preacher a “prohibited person” following 
objections over his “hate speech”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Steven Anderson and members or 
associates of his church are prohibited from entering the Republic of 
South Africa,” Gigaba said at a press conference in Cape Town.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have a duty to prevent harm and 
hatred, in all forms, against LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual
 and intersex) as against any other person in a democratic state,” the 
minister said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anderson has frequently courted 
controversy through his Arizona-based Faithful Word Baptist Church, 
which preaches a literal reading of the Bible.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A Holocaust denier, he prayed for the 
death of US President Barack Obama in 2009 over his pro-choice stance on
 abortion, and called the victims of the November 2015 attack on the 
Bataclan nightclub in Paris “devil worshipers”.</div>

The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU will begin a warning 
strike from October 2nd. The union disclosed this in a statement signed 
by the Chairman, University of Abuja chapter of ASUU. </div>

“We have tried to dialogue with the Federal Government but they have 
been playing games with us; we will start with a warning strike to show 
them we are not jokers. ASUU has being trying to get the attention of 
the Federal Government to intervene in the academic system of 
universities across Nigeria but it has all been abortive. </blockquote>

<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><span style="background-color: white;"></span>Consequently,
 ASUU will give a warning strike which will start on Oct. 2nd. The 
strike will last for one week, and if they do not give us listening 
ears, we will start the indefinite strike in November,” the statement 
read.</blockquote>
The academic union has been at loggerheads with the Federal government 
over the non-implementation of its 2009 agreement with the FG.  Among 
the demands of ASUU includes the exclusion of Nigerian universities from
 Pension Management Company, non-release of NEEDS Assessment 
Intervention Fund, funding of state universities, payment of earned 
academic allowance and renegotiation of the agreements were part of the 
outstanding issues that have not also been addressed.

 militant group, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, NDGJM, in the 
early hours of Tuesday, blew up the Afiesere-Iwhrenene major delivery 
line to UPS/UQCC, operated by Nigeria Petroleum Development Company, 
NDPC/Shorelines Petroleum in Ughelli North Local Government Area of 
Delta State.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The attack confirmed by a leader of the 
group, self-styled Gen. Aldo Agbalaja, came as the Niger Delta Avengers,
 NDA, which ceased hostilities, last month, accused the military of 
harassing old men, women and innocent youths in the region under the 
guise of hunting for militants.</div>

Meanwhile, the Ijaw People Development 
Initiative, IPDI, has warned that the Federal Government’s plan to 
continue to militarize the region and intimidate the people despite the

Detectives

Amid the Port Harcourt operation, 
another asset of the ex-Minister in Abuja, allegedly worth over 
N500million,   has been confiscated pending her trial.</div>

The Economic and Financial Crimes 
Commission (EFCC) had earlier seized a mansion worth N3.58billion from 
the ex-minister, bringing the haul in Abuja to about N4.08billion of 
assets believed to be hers.</div>

The EFCC received intelligence report on the property  allegedly acquired by Mrs. Alison-Madueke in Port Harcourt.</div>

The tracking of the assets is said to be
 part of the probe of about $10billion allegedly looted in cash and 
assets by some former public officers.</div>

Africa, to a guy who every loves and rates as a celebrity, but whose 
music is no longer in demand? How do you tell if a record deal – which 
at the time signified the greatest aspirational goal of your music 
career – will become a Trojan Horse?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Let’s not coat it. Kanye West’s GOOD Music ruined D’banj’s career. There, we said it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2011 was a crucial year for Nigerian music.
 It was the year when the rulers of pop music made a decision that was 
to cost them their dominance. D’banj and Don Jazzy, co-owners of Mo’Hits
 Records had found a way to meet up with Kanye West, where they sold him
 the Nigerian dream and sound. Kanye did buy it.</div>

<em>“D’Banj travelled to Dubai, at Dubai </em>airport<em> he met Kanye West just like anybody can meet any superstar at the airport.”</em> Don Jazzy said, explaining the root of the end of Mo’Hits.</div>

<em>“He had the courage to go and meet him 
and introduce himself and that he wants to break into America and that 
he has done a song with Snoop Dogg and please listen to the song and 
tell me if it is good. And he understood and he listened to it and he 
liked it. And he asked us to drop by New York when we were going to LA 
for the video shoot with Snoop. So when we got to New York, we called 
them and his manager said we should meet up at Wyclef’s studio and the 
rest is history.”</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The rest simply became history. Mo’Hits 
became history due to the irreconcilable differences between the 
business partners. D’banj, ever the opportunist, wanted in on the deal 
from GOOD Music. Don Jazzy hesitated, and wanted none of it. They argued
 and split.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
D’banj revealed this to Olisa Adibua on his chat show, ‘The Truth: <em>“Maybe
 Dr Sid? We came back from New York, and we had a meeting with Jazzy. Me
 and Jazzy. And Jazzy really expressed his discomfort that ‘listen, this
 place is too expensive. We are spending money, we are going to stay 
there, things dey happen for Nigeria, we are already bosses here, we 
don’t need all these…make we just stay </em>here..</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>“And I’m like ‘we are almost </em>there,<em>
 like it’s expensive but I know it’s not really guaranteed, because it’s
 a dog eat dog world out there. And in his own words, ‘you can’t leave </em>certainty<em> for uncertainty,’ which makes sense.</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>“But I said to him that </em>listen brother<em> this is not uncertainty. For Kanye West to see us is not a joke. He saw us in Dubai, </em>na<em> God. Is it not the same Nigeria that we are doing music that took us there.</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>“And I asked him that, and he said he 
didn’t want to go, he didn’t want us to do it again, he said he wasn’t 
interested. So Jazzy literally said that he wasn’t interested, and I 
told </em>him,<em> because I had sensed it…before the last concert I had
 told the lawyers that I felt that it wasn’t…that’s why we had legal 
papers.</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>“So they were trying to get him to come
 around, but I understood totally, which is what I said to you. So when 
he came back home, he had a meeting and that was in July, and he said he
 doesn’t want us to do Mo’Hits again. That he doesn’t want us to do 
Mo’Hits again. And I said to him, ‘Please give me 6 months’.</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>“So I told him to give me 6 months, 
that he should please just…for me I was even trying to sell my shares, 
to convince him again, to sell my shares to someone else, take the 
money, go abroad and try. To do anything I could, because I had seen 
that it wasn’t working, and </em>him<em> and Sid had formed this 
synergy. It was very clear the way…I could see it. He wasn’t very 
comfortable around me, I didn’t understand what was happening, and me I 
didn’t…everybody </em>knows<em> that I don’t have time. I was always on the move.</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>“I wasn’t always on ground to see, and I
 think that was my mistake – I wasn’t sensitive enough to have noticed. 
And prior to that, if I felt anything, just as you would do as a boss, 
you should do whatever needed to be done. So I told him to give me 6 
months. I remember December, </em>Iwe<em> had a meeting, and everybody 
was there, and Don Jazzy also said the same thing which was after 6 
months. That was December 2011, and he said, that he had thought about 
it, and he wasn’t interested. In fact, not just me, that this one wasn’t
 interested (pointing to others).</em></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<em>“I was heartbroken, I think Kayswitch 
was with them, it was one voice, and I felt like…what’s happening here? 
And that’s where I started hearing few things that people just felt that
 they were not comfortable with me.”</em></div>

The end of Mo’Hits, signaled the music end 
for D’banj. He was signed to GOOD Music, and Kanye West gave him his 
blessings, his chain, a remix of ‘Scapegoat’, and hummed his way into 
‘The Morning’. Cosigns by other artistes helped make the charade 
continue, but the facts remained clear,; D’banj did not release any solo
 project under good music.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
D’banj lost Don Jazzy, lost Mo’Hits 
Records, and lost his momentum. ‘Oliver Twist’ ( a Don Jazzy 
production), kept him alive musically, and so did the 2013 album, “D 
Kings Men”.  But ultimately, the damage was done. He has never 
recovered.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Ever since his split with Don Jazzy in 
2011, there’s been a steady decline of D’banj’s musical powers, even 
though his celebrity went the other way. Each year brings another D’banj
 power move and endorsement deal, but the quality of the music takes a 
hit. 2013’s compilation album “D King’s Men” was a fantastic project 
which still stands as his best DB Records body of work, but it failed to
 catch on, with many attributing it to the lack of love from core fans 
who still blame him for splitting the indomitable Mo’Hits Records.</div>

But subsequent singles have found plenty of
 marketing yield little fruits, and the dissent from critics and 
listeners have always been felt. A few bright spots have made his case 
salvageable; ‘Top of the world’, ‘Feeling the nigga’ and 2016’s 
‘Emergency’ have still kept his case for music credibility alive, but he
 manages to find new ways to come up with less-inspired sounds.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2016 has had his record label undergo 
severe changes, and almost fallen apart. His producer DeeVee split from 
the group, so also did his joker, Tonto Dikeh, who is seeking fulfilment
 from motherhood and other familial concerns. His other signees, 2kriss,
 have been without buzz nor content.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
But he is coming through with two new 
singles for an album. And you begin to wonder if he still has enough 
juice left in the tank to push through another album release. This year 
marks his 11 year in the music industry. Three studio albums, two 
compilation albums, and an EP is a good run for the Nigerian music 
industry, but he intends to change that number with another project.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The singer’s album will be purportedly be 
dropping before the end of the year, and plans are already underway to 
commence the rollout of singles, and other promotional materials. With a
 bashed musical credibility, and a fanbase that pretty much has very 
little contemporary reason to follow the new music, only time and the 
content of his album will be determinants on if there’s enough left in 
D’banj for another D’banj album.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Without GOOD Music, chances are that the 
story would have been different. Maybe the split with Don Jazzy would 
have stilled happened, but for other reasons. GOOD Music hastened it, 
and took away from D’banj, more than it offered.</div>

The
 immediate past Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said on Monday 
that having a handle on Nigeria’s spiralling inflation, foreign exchange
 problem, fiscal deficit and debts control were key to resolving the 
country’s current economic crisis.<br />

Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, who spoke on Aljazeera TV programme, The Stream, 
said focusing on the basic issues of macroeconomic stability was crucial
 to fixing the country’s economic challenges.<br />

“If you don’t pay attention to the fundamentals of having a stable 
and good exchange rate policy, inflation under control, manageable 
fiscal deficit and debts, there will continue to be trouble in the 
economy,” she said.<br />

Nigeria is facing its worst economic crisis in decades. The economy 
slipped into recession after contracting in the first two quarters of 
2016.<br />

Inflation jumped from 16.2 per cent in July to 17.1 per cent in August 2016, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.<br />

Since the introduction of the floating foreign exchange policy by the
 Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which freed the Naira from a band of 
N197-N199 to the dollar, the currency has been in a free fall against 
other international currencies.<br />

From about N281 to the dollar at the beginning of the policy in June,
 Naira crashed to about N420 to the dollar shortly before the Sallah 
holidays on Friday.<br />

Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, a former World Bank Managing Director, told Al 
Jazeera that she remained optimistic that solutions to the country’s 
economic decline could still be found.<br />

Asked what would be her top three priorities to resolve the country’s
 current economic crisis if she had remained the finance minister, Mrs. 
Okonjo-Iweala said she would prefer the current managers of the economy 
talk about it.<br />

“I have contributed the best I could to the country. It is still the 
most interesting country in the world. It is better to leave those who 
are managing now to say what they would do.<br />

“All I can say is that there are solutions. Nigeria is a vibrant 
country. I love it so much. I know it is going to come out of this one 
way or another,” she said.<br />

On if President Muhammadu Buhari were to ask her to come and help in 
resolving the country’s economic crisis, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said: “One 
of the things you learn as you get wiser is to talk less as you grow 
older.<br />

“I have spent my time contributing to the country. It will be better 
to leave those managing the economy to do what they know how to do.<br />

“I served my country for seven years and it was a great honour. The 
second time was very tough, but it was still an honour. I am not the 
only person who is a repository of knowledge. There are other people who
 can equally try their hands in running the economy.”<br />

On the continental scale, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, expressed regrets the 
economic gains recorded in Africa have started being eroded in the last 
two to three years.<br />

“On the continent, we have seen a period when the economy was doing 
relatively well. It’s only in the last two to three years that things 
have started to go a bit south.”<br />

She spoke about the job initiative of the Goodluck Jonathan government, YOU-WIN.<br />

“The whole idea was to have a business plan competition. 
Beneficiaries were expected to create jobs to employ six people or more.<br />

“Each created 9-10 jobs. The World Bank did an evaluation of it and 
found it good. I do believe the government should come in. We started a 
peer to peer mentoring. Now, one of the things I want to say is that 
creating employment is not only about struggles, it is about managing 
success,” she said.<br />

On how the anti-corruption war was fought during her time in 
government, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala described it as “a very tough fight”.<br />

“It was tough. I must thank my team. You don’t do it alone. I had the
 support of an economic team in the Ministry of Finance. At the end of 
the day, you need to have some principles,” she said.

Nigeria
 currently imports significant amounts of coal and iron ore despite huge
 deposits of the mineral resources in the country, the Federal 
Government has said.<br />

The Federal Government said this in a document entitled: ‘Road map 
for the Growth and Development of the Nigerian Mining Industry’, with 
the forward written by the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. 
Kayode Fayemi.<br />

According to the report, the country was also importing barites until
 2003 when the Federal Government banned its importation, adding that 
the country had since become a net exporter of barites.<br />

The report stated, “Today, mineral production data in Nigerian mining
 is unclear and inadequate. A reasonable conclusion can be drawn that 
the industry is constrained. However, given the historical 
under-reporting of production by existing firms, together with the fact 
that most of Nigeria’s mineral production is conducted by artisanal 
miners, it is believed that the production figures are understated.<br />

“Mineral revenues are often in one of the two markets: local 
consumption and exports. Local consumption accounts for majority of the 
market, as minerals contributed only about 0.02 per cent of the reported
 exports in 2012.<br />

“In a number of cases, the excess of demand over local production 
makes Nigeria a net importer of minerals. This is despite the presence 
of huge potential for some of these minerals, highlighting the market 
opportunity that exists from import substitution.<br />

“For example, Nigeria imports significant amounts of coal and iron 
ore despite the potential endowment it has. Nigeria used to import 
barites until 2003 when the government banned imports to boost 
production.”<br />

The report added that the sector contributed approximately 0.33 per 
cent to the Gross Domestic Product of the country in 2015 and that the 
contribution was a reversal from the historically higher percentages 
contributed by the solid minerals sector.<br />

One of the most critical factors for creating an enabling environment
 for exploration and mining is investor perception, the report noted.<br />

It stated, “Undue interference by communities and state governments, 
with expectations outside the provisions of the law/regulations, 
cripples investments and the development of the mining sector.<br />

“Uncertainty and inconsistency in state and federal laws, 
interpretation and enforcement will hamper development. The perception 
of a change of regime affecting laws also stalls investment and 
partnership.<br />

“Fiscal policies that remain stable and predictable in the face of 
changing regimes improve transparency and foster good governance within 
the sector.”<br />

The report also highlighted three phases for putting the minerals 
sector on the path of growth. The phases are the short, medium and long 
terms.

A
 former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said that the 
state has political and economic stability because of a solid 
foundation.<br />

He told reporters after observing the Eid prayers at Dodan Barracks 
praying ground in Lagos, that lack of solid foundation contributed to 
the nation’s current economic situation.<br />

He said economic restrategising and replanning were necessary to achieve sustainable national prosperity.<br />

“The political and economic stability we are enjoying in Lagos today 
is as a result of a solid foundation. Without a good and solid 
foundation, we cannot achieve a sustainable economic prosperity.”<br />

On the hardship in the country he said: “We need to re-strategise and
 re-plan, but that planning period is always a very difficult period in 
any family, organisation and nation.<br />

“That is what we are experiencing now, but it is for a better and stronger future.”<br />

Lagos State Deputy Governor Mrs Idiat Adebule urged Nigerians to 
uphold the significance of Eid-el-Kabir, total trust and obedience to 
God, to accelerate the pace of economic recovery.<br />

Adebule also urged them to celebrate peacefully and reach out to the less-privileged among them.<br />

“We can only enjoy Allah’s favour when we totally trust and obey His 
will. He is our creator and He knows what is best for us as individuals 
and as a nation,” Adebule said.<br />

House of Representatives Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, urged Nigerians to be patient and not lose hope.<br />

Gbajabiamila said President Muhammadu Buhari was making efforts to reform the economy.<br />

“I urge us to be prayerful and by God’s grace we shall get better and stronger as a nation”’ he said.<br />

Chief Imam of Lagos Garuba Akinola-Ibrahim called for greater 
sacrifice from the government and citizens to survive the recession<br />

“In the spirit of Eid-el Kabir, we urge the government to double up 
efforts to avoid our situation from getting to a critical stage which 
can rub off negatively on all government’s achievements so far,” he 
said.<br />

“I also urge the citizens to exercise patience and be prayerful in this trying period.”<br />

Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni called for reflection on the 
significance of Eid-el Kabir and modest celebration to reduce crime.<br />

Owoseni advised residents to be security conscious and cooperate with security agents to ensure a crime-free celebration.

Many
 residents of Sambang Dagi in Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State
 have been displaced as a result of another earth tremor witnessed in 
the area in the early hours of monday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The incident occurred barely 24 hours after the first tremor was reported at Nok village about 20 kilometres away from Sambang.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) 
reported that the second vibration occurred around 4a.m yesterday, 
leaving shocked residents scampering for safety.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was not immediately clear whether there were casualties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Earlier, the state government had in a statement urged residents of the affected communities to remain calm.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The government last Sunday appealed for 
calm, and sympathised with the residents of Kwoi in Jaba Local 
Government Area, following the first tremor.</div>

The government said in a statement 
signed by Samuel Aruwan, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to

Following the recent outburst over reports that former First lady 
Patience Jonathan had claimed ownership of a $31.4 million found in the

replied Patience Jonathan's critics, stating that the former first lady 
can own any amount of money as she was the wife of a deputy governor,

However a lawyer and National Coordinator, Centre for the Vulnerable and
 the Underprivileged, Oghenejabor Ikimi, said the former first lady 
needs to be investigated since her office as a first lady is not known 
to come with remunerations.<br />

Nigeria’s economic recession is a phase that “virtually all nations”

eid-el-kabir messagae, noted that the economic crunch and nationwide 
belt tightening is merely a “passing phase”.<br />
He urged Nigerians to
 view the hard times as being necessary while stating that the “present

Minister of State for Agriculture, Lokpobiri Heinekein says if Nigeria 
fails to begin the process of producing its own rice, the cost of a bag 
of rice may shoot up to about N40,000 by December this year. He said 
this at a town hall meeting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state this yesterday 
September 10th. <br />

during a police raid on his home. Russian police seized the haul during a

The Director  of media and publicity of the National Youth Service Corps
 (NYSC), Bose Aderibigbe revealed that the NYSC is in dire need of funds
 and resources. Aderibigbe said N10, 500, budgeted by the government, is
 no longer sustainable to purchase a complete set of kits for each corp 
member in the NYSC.
According to The Guardian, Aderibigbe said that out of the 260,000 corp 
members to be mobilised this year, 70,000 are still waiting.

“This year for instance, since the Federal Government does not want a 
situation where youths who are done with tertiary education hang out

October or thereabouts, this outstanding will be taken care of for the 
year.This is not a hopeless situation as people are made to believe. </blockquote>

“It should be noted that once the Federal Government gives us the figure
 to mobilise for a particular year, they back it up with funds to take 
care of that number. We are in need of a lot of funds to ease our 
operations, but we will continue to cry to the government until the 
situation improves.

“As we speak, all 37 orientation camps have boreholes that take care of 
their water needs. The battle to make the camps spick and span took a 
different dimension under the immediate past Director General, Brig 
General Johnson Olawumi, who went the extra mile to ensure that there 
were adequate facilities in camps. </blockquote>

“In those days, when the NYSC visits state governors, we usually went 
with copies of the laws setting us up. And we always let the governors 
to know that state governments have a duty to provide facilities at 
these camps. Of course, in this direction, some state governments 
performed creditably well.

“When I was a state coordinator, I remember former Governor Alao Akala 
of Oyo State, providing the NYSC with a giant Mikano generator. Former 
Governor Martins Elechi, of Ebonyi State, also gave NYSC in the state 
three Mikano generating sets, and Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo 
State, also gave NYSC in the state a power generating set.

“Right now, through the instrumentality of the NYSC, and some state 
governments, all orientation camps in the state have power generating 
sets to take care of their power needs.”

“General Olawunmi would even go straight to see what the toilets look 
like on visiting an orientation camp. Thereafter, he would move to the 
kitchen to inspect the conditions, taste the meals, check out the sizes 
of meats and fishes given to corps members, and ensure that things were 
generally done the right way. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“He also ensured that more toilet facilities, including mobile toilets 
were put in place for the convenience of corps members. The good thing 
in all of these is that all these steps the incumbent DG, Brig. General 
Sule Zakari Kazaure, I also taking in a bid to lift the scheme higher.”

“The sum of N10, 500 is budgeted by the Federal Government for the 
complete set of kits for each corps member.This includes a pair of 
khaki; two white vests; one crested vest; two pairs of shorts; a fez 
cap; a pair of canvass and a pair of jungle boots. </blockquote>

The presidential aide made the comment after being challenged by

During the launch, Buhari urged Nigerians to start changing their bad habits before expecting change of the government.<br />

Omojuwa however urged the president to reduce the presidential fleet before expecting Nigerians to change.<br />

 Nollywood comic actress, Funke Akindele, has made a passionate appeal

Abdul Rasheed Bello also known as JJC Skillz in London, after her failed

There
 have been interesting arguments over Minister of Finance, Kemi 
Adeosun’s observation that “recession is just a word,” and NAN MD, Bayo 
Onanuga claiming that reports of hardship in the land is exaggerated 
propaganda.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think we need to break down the 
subject further from a layman’s perspective. Recession is a word, no 
doubt, but it is more than a word, it is an experience: the experience 
that the majority of Nigerians is going through. If you are at a 
significant remove from that experience, it may be difficult to know how
 it feels, and if you are an economist, you are likely to be 
conveniently obsessed with textbook ideas.Recession is when Nigerians 
begin to shift the traditional dates for social parties. You know we 
love parties a lot. Virtually every weekend, there is one party or the 
other, very loud celebrations where people wear the famous aso ebi, and 
the Naira becomes a flying object, being thrown all over the place, at 
the musician, the celebrant, and her friends and family, with so much 
joy floating in the air, and plates of jolloff rice, eaten half way and 
left to waste, area boys having their own share of the fun, and 
Nigerians showing the world that life is indeed for the living.
Sometimes, these parties make no sense: imagine a man throwing a big 
party to “turn the back” of his great grandfather who died 50 years ago 
(!) – a great grandfather he never knew, or a lavish party to celebrate 
the purchase of a second-hand car. Those things are very rare these 
days. And when some parties are held, the date on the invitation card is
 during the week: can you imagine being invited to a wedding on a 
Monday? I have seen that happen. The event was over and done with before
 5 p.m. Smart way to save money in a season of recession. There were 
guests of course, but not the kind of crowd you’d get at a typical 
Nigerian party on a Friday or Saturday. The celebrants actually 
confessed they didn’t have the means to feed too many people. That is 
what recession has done. Nobody boasts anymore about “declaring surplus”
 – a once-upon-a-time very famous phrase in this country!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I was much younger, my friends 
and I used to gate-crash parties. Bored, with not much to do, we would 
dress up and go from one party to the other. It was called “mo gbo mo 
ya” – I heard and I came. In those days, all you needed was to go to a 
party to which you had not been invited, and without knowing anybody, 
you took a seat and before long, someone would come along and ask if you
 had eaten. In a matter of minutes, whatever you wanted would be placed 
before you. Drinks? Some friends used to boast about “finishing” a 
carton of beer, and they would have their fill and quietly sneak away. 
Try that these days and you would know that recession is more than a 
word. Virtually every party is now strictly by invitation. Even when it 
is not boldly stated on the invitation card, you’d get to know the truth
 when you attempt to gate-crash.Parties are now organised with such 
strict protocols, it is like trying to access Aso Villa. You would be 
screened, your bag will be checked, and don’t think it is Boko Haram 
attack they are afraid of, they just want to be sure you are not 
gate-crashing, and if you don’t have an invitation card, you would of 
course be turned back. There are some exceptions of course, where the 
protocol is a matter of security: particularly at those parties where 
there would be many VIPs. Nigerian VIPs don’t like to mix with just 
anybody.
Even if you manage to gatecrash, nobody will attend to you. What 
operates at parties these days, is a KYG (Know-Your-Guest) system. After
 sitting down, someone has to identify you as his or her guest. You 
don’t get served food, unless your host or hostess gives specific 
instructions. And you can’t drink a carton of beer anymore at your 
host’s expense! I certainly can’t remember when last I saw anyone 
getting drunk at other people’s expense at a party. Even close friends 
of celebrants, the ones who are a bit comfortable, go to parties these 
days with their own small cooler of drinks. The celebrant will offer you
 one or two bottles. If you want more than that, the ushers could become
 hostile or they could tell you pointedly: “drinks have finished.” I 
have had on one occasion to give the ushers, money to go and get me the 
drink of my choice. But once upon a time in this country, drinks don’t 
stop flowing at parties. The host will be so ashamed he or she would 
order more drinks and apologize to no end.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Where I come from, local women used to
 go to parties with cellophane bags, hidden away somewhere, and when 
they are served food, they would pull out the cellophane bag and pour 
food into it, all of that is done under the table. Next thing: they will
 start harassing the ushers: “we have not eaten here oh. Nobody has 
given us drinks: drinks they have moved to their collection cellophane 
bags! But party organisers have also learnt to be vigilant: they serve 
table to table; map out the space carefully and monitor the tables. 
Before 2019, perhaps a time will come when ushers will take your 
photograph, or there will be CCTV monitors at social events, just so you
 don’t come back and say you have not been served. That is change. That 
is recession. If you are a man-about-town, you can’t fail to notice 
this: that something has indeed changed in the social circuit. But there
 is that one per cent crowd, whose pockets are still so deep, if you get
 invited to their parties, it is like going to a surplus declaration 
event, what Nigerians call “too much money.” Even that is changing 
though, people are learning to be careful, so they don’t get invited to 
come and explain how they came about so much money.Recession is when you
 now read in the newspapers virtually every week about people committing
 suicide. Nigerians are so fun-loving we were once described as the 
happiest people on earth. Right now, we will fail the test. Suicide used
 to be so rare in this country. It was considered impossible. Why would 
anyone want to kill himself? I used to hear people say: “eba is sweet 
oh, I can’t come and die” or “life is for the living” or “e go better.” 
People are not so sure anymore. In the past month, there have been 
reports about two foreigners doing business in Nigeria who have also 
committed suicide. Every reported suicide in recent times, has been 
tied, one way or the other, to the recession in the country. One man had
 an argument with his wife over school fees and housekeeping money and 
he went and ended it all. Another man actually left a note saying he had
 to kill himself because there is too much hardship in the country. 
Marriages are collapsing. Domestic violence is on the rise.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Husbands that are out of work can no 
longer maintain their families, they can’t pay school fees, they have 
become useless in their own homes, they are helpless. Their wives want 
to leave, even when they are not too sure of the next destination. There
 are at least two celebrated cases of women who have either slain their 
husbands or wounded them badly. In both cases, there was that notorious 
thing about a second woman in the background. Sharing what is not enough
 for one person with another woman, in a season of recession, could be a
 crime, but the biggest dysfunction is that of the pocket. One woman, a 
lawyer oh (!) stabbed her husband in the neck. Another after having sex 
with her husband, and putting him to sleep, got a machete and butchered 
him. The man is presently in what Yorubas call, “boya o ma ku, boya o 
maa ye” condition. Whether he would live or die is uncertain.Recession 
is when companies are retrenching everyday or closing shop and SMEs are 
dying. In the last one year, high unemployment figures have been 
announced. Banks have had to shed weight; the foreign exchange crisis 
has forced many companies to downsize or abandon Nigeria, investors are 
taking their funds out of the country, many states of the Federation are
 so much in distress, they have stopped paying salaries.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Civil servants cannot even afford a 
bag of rice, because their minimum wage is N18, 000 and a bag of rice is
 N22, 000 or higher in some places. Recession is when Nigerians now 
steal pots of soup and basic food items, and they can’t buy rams for 
Sallah, and they are told “don’t worry, change begins with you!” Every 
worker who has lost his or her job in the last one year is not the only 
one affected, the knock-on effect has brought anguish to other 
dependants, who now have a bread-winner behaving like a bread seeker. 
That is recession. That is hardship.Recession is when enjoyment spots 
that used to be filled up every Friday evening are now empty. Nigerians 
used to celebrate what they call “Thank God it is Friday.” In Lagos, 
Friday evenings used to be the boys’ night. Husbands didn’t go home 
early. These days, husbands go home early and Fridays have become 
slightly boring. Recession is when prostitutes reduce their charges. I 
have it on good authority, from those who know, that even prostitutes 
have had to embrace change. And old girlfriends now demand pension 
benefits. Recession is when families which used to run the generator 24 
hours and boast that their children can’t stand heat, have had to 
adjust, and run the generator only from 12 midnight, or before.

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Recession is when men come out and 
complain that their wives no longer allow them to touch them: “Are you 
mad? With the way things are, all you think of is sex?” Kama Sutra rites
 are best enjoyed only in happy lands. Recession is when in spite of all
 this, the breweries in Nigeria are posting unbelievable record profits 
and smiling to the banks. The men go home and privately drown their 
sorrow in bottles. Mrs. Adeosun, this is the true meaning of recession.</div>

Former First lady, Patience Jonathan, has allegedly told a court that 
the sum of  $31.4 million involved in an alleged fraud case before a 
Federal High Court in Lagos, that was frozen, belongs to her.<br />

According to <a href="http://guardian.ng/news/patience-jonathan-tells-court-frozen-account-belongs-to-her/" target="_blank">Guardian</a>,
 counsel to the first defendant in charge with case number FHC/337C/16, 
Gboyega Oduwole, informed the court that Patience Jonathan filed a 
fundamental application against the Economic and Financial Crimes 
Commission (EFCC), claiming ownership of the money.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a>The EFCC had taken former presidential aide, Amajuoyi
 Azubike Briggs, former Skye Bank official, Damola Bolodeoku, Pluto 
Property and Investment Company Limited and Avalon Global Property 
Development Company Limited to court in an alleged $31.4 million fraud 
involving the companies without addresses.<br />

Others also charged include Seagate Property Development and Investment 
Company Limited; Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited, 
Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited and Globus Integrated
 Services Limited.<br />

According to an application filed on September 6th, with file number 
FHC/L/C5/1233/16,  the former First lady allegedly asked the court to 
make an order for the enforcement of her fundamental rights, in terms of
 reliefs she sought, and naming as defendants, the EFCC and Skye Bank 
Plc.<br />
<br />
The former first lady asked the court to make a declaration that the 
fund standing to the credit of four of the companies and an account in 
her own name in Skye Bank belonged to her. She also asked the court to 
declare that the action of the respondents in placing a No 
Debit/Freezing Order on the said accounts without any order of a 
competent court of law or prior notice to her, to be in breach of her 
fundamental rights as contained in the constitution of the Federal 
Republic of Nigeria.

Fellow Nigerians, I doubt if there is anyone who does not see and feel President Muhammadu Buhari is a complex character. As a matter of fact, that is the veritable hallmark of his persona and super brand. Those of us that supported him voluntarily, and almost blindly, last year did so out of our acute frustration with Project Nigeria. There were those who hated his guts but still went ahead to vote for him because they expected him to wave the fabled magic wand and bring sanity and succour to our insane clime. What no one bargained for was the repercussion, and reverberation, of such venture and adventure. As always, Nigerians felt their situation could never be worse under Buhari than that of the 16-year rule of profligacy of the PDP and the squander-manic regime of President Goodluck Jonathan.<br />
The APC operatives ran a blistering campaign with active collaboration and connivance from some of us. On the matter of the continuation of the Jonathan Presidency, there was no negotiation. Even now as people pummel us over the seeming inertia or retrogression of the Buhari government, I still stand by my decision to support Major General Muhammadu Buhari, warts and all. Walahi, I would have loved any of the combinations of Donald Duke, Nasir El Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, Mobola Johnson, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Nuhu Ribadu, Oby Ezekwesili, Charles Soludo, Akinwunmi Adesina, Pat Utomi, Kayode Fayemi, and some of our other tested and brightest young stars. They may have their personal foibles like all mortals do but I’m persuaded that Nigeria would have joined the comity of other nations parading some youthful cerebral leaders by now. But the ways of Nigerian politicians are not the ways of mere mortals. We have our unique and peculiar methods of doing things. Our incorrigibility is almost second to none. Everything about us is about self and self alone. Everyone’s permutation is about who is his friend, school mate, church member, Muslim brother, godfather or godson, village folk, and so on. It is not about what you know but more about who you know. Nepotism is the order of the day!<br />
That is why the best of themyriad of Nigerian brains would never be able to win elections at certain levels because of our irredeemable obsession with primordial and parochial sentiments. The import of my preamble is that Buhari was a product of our maddening and inordinate search for a near saint amongst us and he perfectly fitted the bill. Buhari himself must have assumed that the votes given to him were signed off carte-blanche and in blind trust. I’m sure he never expected that the honeymoon would not be an endless romance. But things and times have changed.It is now sour grapes time. Except for profiteers and/or pretenders who would not tell our President the gospel truth, things are falling apart. The reasons are not because of what Buhari and company are doing wrong but because of what they are not doing right which I hope to enumerate and dissect.<br />
I had chosen to write on this topic before I received the message quoted below from a young, concerned Nigerian reflecting on the “new” rebranding that we have been subjected to. His views mirror the present mood of the nation and the restiveness of our people especially the young ones who fought gallantly for Change and PMB!<br />
“President Buhari, with all due respect to your high office, you are losing me. What’s wrong? What’s wrong with your advisers? Who got you to sign up to the cliché called “Change Begins With Me” and to throw the weight of your office behind it? Did they put together a crack team of psychologists, communicators, sociologists, political scientists, etc? I refuse to believe that this programme, and especially the name, is the product of deep thinking and reflection.<br />
First, the idea that “Change Begins With Me”, renders all our efforts to get you elected in 2015 worthless. Heck, why did we bother? If it’s going to start with us Lilliputs, we might as well have left Goodluck Jonathan in office and allow him and his band of hopeless cohorts to get on with the good job they were doing of raping Nigeria. Don’t you get it? Change began with you! We, the people, already implemented the biggest change possible with turning around this country by electing you on the mantra of change. So why are you now passing the buck? The buck is on your desk. Make the change happen and we will follow from there. It’s over a year and many, sadly, are already suffering buyer’s remorse. Arrest the trend!<br />
Secondly, what change can any single individual put into action that will impact the culture and behaviour of 180 million people in double quick time? We are in a hurry, Mr. President. So much has been lost. So to rely on Adeola, Abubakar or Opara to start the change and hope that we will be counting gains in months is delusional. You don’t have all the time. We do not have the time. Start the Change!” – Chris Adetayo<br />
Let me reiterate that I have had the privilege of meeting and interacting with some members of the Buhari administration. I can confirm that I have held discussions and communicated the feelings of both the rich and poor on the streets directly to them. However, I am not sure that they are in tune with the reality of things on this side of the divide. I believe I have sufficient knowledge of the political history of Nigeria. I’m afraid to say, I see the same symptoms of afflictions that ravaged previous governments and rendered them incapacitated. I’m saddened that no lessons seemed to have been learnt from our beleaguered past. Government appears to believe only in its own mind-set and every complaint or suggestion is summed up in some dangerous conclusions: the wailing wailers; corruption is fighting back; the suffering of Nigerians is exaggerated, etc.<br />
Equally worrisome is the apparent paranoia that has crept into our senior government officials. Every commentator or demonstrator is perceived an enemy of government. I was surprised to read how my childhood friend and brother, Femi Adesina, singled me out in his article yesterday and accused me of insinuating that he was too comfortable in Aso Rock. There are so many occupants in Aso Rock and I know the limits of Femi’s influence on the men of power. I can never blame him for what I clearly know is beyond him. He faces the same dilemma of his predecessors who found themselves defending the indefensible in order to exhibit their hard work, competence and loyalty. It is a delicate and thankless job that leads oftentimes to Golgotha. I love Femi so much that I would rather offer him my sincere prayers instead of hanging him.<br />
Let me go to the next case at hand. I could not believe the shabby treatment meted to Mrs Oby Ezekwesili and other members of the Bring Back Our Girls agitators. Their harmless and defenceless group is being harassed for merely exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights of expression, association and movement. They constitute no danger whatsoever to society. Even if President Buhari won’t receive or entertain them, a senior member of the Federal Government should have been assigned to meet, pacify and reassure them. Something is terminally wrong with our crisis management capabilities. Our proclivity for mismanaging and escalating troubles is legendary. This particular case is as disgraceful as it is unnecessary. Once upon a time, in the not too distant past, these were the friends of Buhari. They had pinned their hope on the muscular and military abilities of our President to liberate the Chibok girls in a jiffy. If things were proving difficult as it seems, constant dialogue is the only way out of the debacle. But the handlers of Buhari prefer to fuel the long held belief or myth that Buhari is a mean and ruthless man. This is not good. It also comes at the wrong time. This administration has been accused of several human rights abuses and, according to the Minster of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the President is heading for the United Nations on Tuesday to make the case that his administration is not guilty of such allegations. Intolerance for the rights of expression, association and movement cannot be a good way of making out such a case.<br />
Anyone who has met President Buhari would readily attest to his simplicity and humility. His witty jokes are remarkable and legendary, just like his hearty smiles and laughter are infectious. He certainly means well for Nigeria and wants to rid our nation of the debilitating cankerworm of corruption and indiscipline. Why,therefore, would anyone want to remind Nigerians that the Buhari in uniform is not different from Buhari, the born again democrat. Why are they compounding Buhari’s image of an irascible dictator? Buhari needs to make a conscious effort to tear the toga of vindictiveness and irritability that appears to surround him. The biggest image deficit he has today is due to the fact that his biggest pet project, the war against corruption, is believed to be largely uncoordinated and too staccato in outlook.<br />
It is difficult to ignore the cries of so many Nigerians who feel let down by a government that promised so much change but seems to have short-changed the people who saw Buhari as a liberator. Even if some of the most vociferous complainants are being cheeky and outright mischievous, many are doing so out of genuine concern. They do not want Buhari to fail. It is someone who loves you unconditionally that can do this. They are worried that the President behaves like a man who feels he has all the time in the world when in reality he has none. Some believe that he started fading and failing when he took his time in selecting his ministers and advisers. The intractable squabbles in his Party has also contributed to the lacklustre nature of his government. APC does not look or act like a Party in power. There seems to be no serious input from the Party to the affairs of government and governance.<br />
The government has been wobbling and fumbling by doing the same things PDP used to do that led to the disintegration of the biggest political party in Africa, according to their self-glorification. The war of attrition in PDP has been passed on to APC. A house divided against itself is inviting extermination. And whenever politicians fight dirty it affects governance adversely.<br />
The economy is in shambles and the commonest justification is that Jonathan’s gang looted the treasury. All that is well and good. But Nigerians knew this and therefore voted for Change! We promised to make things much better. Fighting corruption alone would not save Nigeria. We must fight endemic poverty. If Alhaji Lai Muhammed likes, let him launch a million campaigns and waste more scarce resources on doing a rehash of what past governments did that led nowhere. The Yoruba have a way of describing this kind of unproductive sermonisation: “Eni ebi npa ko gbo iwaasu!” (A hungry man does not listen to sermons in the church).<br />
What the people want to see are the following: a drastic reduction in the size and budget of our over-bloated governments; a sustained war against poverty; protection of lives and properties; creating a less rancorous atmosphere for businesses to thrive; special concessions and incentives to employers of labour; a stable currency;upgrading our educational system and making the schools’ curriculum more relevant to our communities and society in general;provision of social infrastructure, particularly power, good roads, hospitals and potable water;and so on.<br />
The mind-set of gloating over the fall of some former members of the privileged class is counter-productive. We must be careful of the image portrayed to foreign investors. Let government concentrate urgently on alleviating the suffering of the people. It is obvious that government may never be able to collect enough money back from the brigands and looters to make appreciable impact on our national treasury. We should stop building our castle in the air and start thinking outside the box.</div>
