But they acknowledged the party had much to do to rebuild its image.
“There has been damage on the part of the ANC. We need to go down on the ground and explain exactly what happened. We still have a lot to do,” ANC chief whip, Jackson Mthembu, told reporters outside the parliament. “We believe him (Zuma). We accept his apology. We think we can now move forward.”
Zuma had already secured the backing of top ANC officials on Friday, after apologising for failing to repay some of the money spent on his residence.
“The president has apologised and that’s the humility that is necessary for any leader,” ANC General Secretary Gwede Mantashe told 702 Talk Radio, after a wider group of party members met on Monday to discuss Zuma.
Zuma has survived several political and personal scandals, fending off accusations of corruption, influence peddling and even rape before he took office in 2009.
On March 1, he survived his second no-confidence vote in a year over what the DA party called his reckless handling of the economy.

credit: channelstv

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-client="ca-pub-8675631753543209" data-ad-slot="2314255613" data-adsbygoogle-status="done" style="display: inline-block; height: 250px; width: 300px;"><ins id="aswift_1_expand" style="background-color: transparent; border: none; display: inline-table; height: 250px; margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 300px;"><ins id="aswift_1_anchor" style="background-color: transparent; border: none; display: block; height: 250px; margin: 0; padding: 0; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 300px;"></ins></ins></ins>

I am his father; I am his brother. The past is behind us. Whatever he said in public in the past is gone. It’s time to move on,” he had said.
But Aluko said Fayose framed up the whole idea, recalling the role the governor played in the case of Afolabi Akanni, the Ekiti state house of assembly member who was rumoured dead as a ploy to make the department of state services (DSS) parade him alive.
He explained that the Ekiti PDP invited him to a meeting at Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos, and he attended with his wife, only for Fayose to storm the place.
“It is worthy of note that my wife barged into the meeting to inform me of the presence of pressmen,” he said.
“At that point, I became enraged and decided to leave the place, but I noticed Governor Fayose rushing after me downstairs in a gestapo manner.
“My wife was already fidgeting and almost crying and suddenly I could not find her around me. I immediately realised that I need to oblige Governor Fayose’s instruction of the facing the press because of the safety of my family.
“Like I earlier said before Nigerians and the whole world, manipulation characterised the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti state, I still stand by all I said.
“You will also notice the several counter-allegations by Fayose and his media team that none of them has refuted all I have said, rather the attack has been on the messenger and not the message. I will like to apologise to all Nigerians that perhaps, accepting the invitation was a tactical error.
“I will also like you to know that I am dealing with a master fraudster who is always full of mischief. You will all recollect how he announced the purported death of Hon. Afolabi Akanni, and the purported arrest of four members of the Ekiti state house of assembly who later resurfaced.”

credit: thecablesng

‘My Husband Is Telling The Truth, He’s A Great Leader’ – Melania Trump

Melania Trump, largely absent from the US presidential campaign, stumped for her husband Donald for the first time Monday and called him a great leader who treats everyone equal. Looking to bounce back after a rocky week, Trump called his better half to the rescue. The 45-year-old former model of Slovenian origin is chic and stylish, but until now her public presence alongside her Republican frontrunner husband has been fleeting, including brief appearances at election watch parties.

Her interviews have been limited. But in the US state of Wisconsin, where polls show Trump trailing his arch-conservative rival Ted Cruz in the primary that the state hosts Tuesday, Melania is accompanying her husband at several campaign events. Trump, whose apparent degrading of women and controversial remarks about Mexicans and Muslims have raised alarm bells in the Republican Party and more broadly across the American electorate, has confided that his wife has encouraged him to be “more presidential.” At a rally in Wisconsin, Mrs. Trump gushed praise of her husband, saying: “I’m very proud of him. He is a hard worker. He’s kind. He has a great heart. He’s tough. He’s smart.” She added: “He’s a great communicator. He’s a great negotiator. He’s telling the truth. He’s a great leader. He’s fair.”

“As you may know by now, when you attack him, he will punch back ten times harder,” she said. “No matter who you are, a man, or a woman, he treats everyone equal.” Melania unwittingly found herself in the eye of the storm last month in one of the low points of the campaign, when an anti-Trump political group unveiled a questionable ad on Facebook that used a photo of her lying naked and handcuffed to a briefcase. The photograph, taken aboard Trump’s custom-fitted private jet, was part of a shoot for the magazine GQ in 2000, before the couple married. The political poster, released just before votes in Arizona and Utah, featured the photo with the words: “Meet Melania Trump. Your next first lady. Or, you could support Ted Cruz on Tuesday.”

Trump accused Cruz, a senator from Texas, of being behind the provocation and responded by retweeting a photo montage showing an image of Melania next to an unflattering picture of Ted Cruz’s wife Heidi, along with the phrase: “The images are worth a thousand words.” On Monday night, speaking later to Sean Hannity on Fox News, Melania said, “I have a tough skin. I think it’s not fair that they’re attacking family, wife, or children”. – ‘100 percent’ behind husband – The few times that Melania has spoken out, she gushed over her husband, telling MSNBC in February that she was initially attracted by his “great energy,” charm and “amazing mind.”

The couple have a 10-year-old son, Barron. “I am a full-time mom, and I love it,” a smiling Melania proclaimed, adding that her maternal role was the reason she was not out campaigning more with Donald. “But I support my husband 100 percent,” she said. Melania has defended Trump’s more controversial statements. “I don’t feel he insulted the Mexicans,” she said of his explosive remark last June that Mexico was sending “rapists” and other criminals across the border as undocumented immigrants. “He said illegal immigrants,” she added. “He didn’t talk about everybody.” She also stressed that her husband had proposed only a “temporary” ban on Muslims entering the country.

“He wants to protect America… That’s very important to him,” she said, adding that he treats women the same way as men in the Trump organization. Born in what was then Yugoslavia to a fashion-industry mother and a car-salesman father, Melania has recounted studying design and architecture before leaving for Milan and Paris to launch her modelling career. She arrived in the United States in 1996 and met Trump two years later.

They married in January 2005 in Florida and her Dior dress was estimated at $200,000. Among the invited celebrities was Hillary Clinton, this year’s likely Democratic presidential nominee. – Lavish lifestyle – Melania Trump speaks at least five languages, including English, Italian, French and German. Her Twitter account — inactive since Trump declared his candidacy — reflects the privileged lifestyle of a jet-setter traveling between their lavish New York apartment and residences in in Florida. She has tweeted photographs from high-society gatherings and landmark sporting events, as well as recollections of her red-carpet saunters and charity functions. In each image Melania appears impeccably dressed.

Initially, she was not entirely on board with the idea of Trump launching a White House bid, with the candidate acknowledging recently that Melania would have been content as the wife of a billionaire businessman and reality TV star. “She said, ‘We have such a great life. Why do you want to do this?’” Trump told The Washington Post in an interview published Saturday. “I really have to do it,” Trump said he told her, adding that his wife eventually backed his bid and was confident of his victory
Source – www.vanguardngr.com

But reacting, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumuni Jibrin, said some previous administrations in the country, especially former President Olusagun Obasanjo, during his time signed the budget without the details which were made available two weeks latter.

However, a member of the Appropriation Committee, Joseph Edionwele, representing Esan Centra/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency of Edo State, told Vanguard that there was no cause for alarm as the joint committee would meet today to produce the clean copy for onward transmission to the President. Edionwele said necessary reconciliations had been concluded and that the final copy with the details would be ready at today’s meeting. Also speaking to Vanguard on why the details of the budget were not submitted to the Presidency, member representing Akoko Edo Federal Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives, Peter Akpatason, said the National Assembly had to submit the passed 2016 budget to the Presidency without the details to satisfy the curiosity of Nigerians. Akpatason, a former National President of Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, said there was nothing wrong in submitting the passed budget to the Presidency without the details.

He said: “The ideal thing is to send in the details when they are available, but in the circumstance that we find ourselves, if the details are not immediately available, I think it is proper that the President be given the information that he has already. I don’t think there is anything unusual.”
“Again, what is going on just now is also not completely new that the highlights have been forwarded to the President and you take your time to cross the ‘t’s and dot the ‘i’s to make sure that the kind of stories that happened at the beginning will not happen in this case. “I think that is what is going on, Nigerians are anxious, so it is understandable why people are getting so curious about it. The budget proposal was not submitted early enough in the first place and then because of the challenges that followed at the beginning, the passage equally took much longer time
credit: omojuwa.com

Arrogance, greed, sell-out cost PDP the Presidency' - Sheriff says

PDP National Chairman, Alimodu Sheriff says arrogance, greed, sell-out contributed to PDP losing in the 2015 Presidential election. He said this in an interview with Thisday today April 4th.
“I know that arrogance was one of such issues and I also know that some of our party men and women sold out. So many factors contributed to Jonathan’s failure to win the elections.

I may not be able to tell you everything now, but it is an open secret that even his own men worked against him. We Need To Re-establish Nigeria’s Integrity – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has stressed the urgent need to ensure that the potentials of Nigeria are harnessed and used for the good of the country.
Receiving the President of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Dr. Bernard O. Aliyu on Monday at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari said: “Nigeria needs to work on her potentials, so that we don’t remain permanently at the level of potentials.

“A Lot Of Indiscipline”

“If Ethiopia is sustained largely by her airline industry, we have greater potentials here. But we must move out, engage with the rest of the world, as we need to re-establish the integrity of this country. We need to rebuild this country again”.

The President recounted that for the greater part of the last 16 years, oil was sold above $100 per barrel but expressed regret that the nation did not have much to show for it.

“In the First Republic, more enduring infrastructure was built with meagre resources. But in the past 16 years, we made a lot of money without planning for the rainy day.

“We showed a lot of indiscipline in managing our economy, and that is why we are where we are today. But this time round, we’ll do our best.”

The Nigerian-born ICAO President commended President Buhari for strides on anti-corruption and urged President Buhari to pay more attention to development of civil aviation.

“Civil aviation is a catalyst for economic development. OPC Leadership Tussle Threatens Gani Adams’ Power, Detractors Move To Replace Him

A leadership crisis in the Oodua People's Congress (OPC), the Yoruba nationalist organization, has seeped to the surface following some disaffected members challenging the leadership of Otunba Gani Adams, the group's National Coordinator
The aggrieved members held a meeting in the Shagamu area of Ogun State, with the aim finding a replacement for Adams as National Coordinator.

Adams' supporters, aware of the threat the Shagamu meeting poses to the continued relevance of their leader, have started working on how to suppress the detractors.

A statement issued by the Ogun State chapter of the OPC and signed by the state coordinator, Mr. Adeshina Jimoh, described the dissenters as "expelled members." According to the statement, the dissent being expressed is as a result of their expulsion from the organization. Mr. Adeshina, who also branded them disgruntled, acknowledged that the crisis had been fizzing for a while, but was cleverly handled. However, it has now developed a life of its own, making it something that not be ignored.

The statement also faulted demands that the successor be chosen by Ifa divination. It alleged that Mr. Moruf Salami, who is leading the agitation for divination, was himself handpicked as coordinator of the Kwara State Chapter of OPC by Adams before later being removed by the very method through which he was selected.

SaharaReporters could not immediately reach Adams for his reaction, but his Personal Assistant, Mr. Segun Akanni confirmed that the detractors held a meeting and demanded a new leader to be chosen through consultation of "Ifa"

In 16 years, we didn’t save for a rainy day - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has yet again blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the current economic woes of the country.

Speaking when he received Bernard Aliyu, president of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), at the presidential villa in Abuja on Monday, Buhari lamented the fiscal indiscipline of “the past 16 years”, during which PDP was in power and the oil business boomed.

He reiterated the determination of his government to correct the anomalies of the past, saying Nigeria has potentials but a lot is required to ensure that “we don’t remain permanently at the level of potentials”.

“If Ethiopia is sustained largely by her airline industry, we have greater potentials here. But we must move out, engage with the rest of the world, as we need to re-establish the integrity of this country. We need to rebuild this country again,” he said.

He observed that for the greater part of the last 16 years, oil sold above $100 per barrel, yet the country had little to show for it.

“In the First Republic, more enduring infrastructure was built with meagre resources. But in the past 16 years, we made a lot of money without planning for the rainy day.

“We showed a lot of indiscipline in managing our economy, and that is why we are where we are today. But this time round, we’ll do our best.”

Credit: thecablesng

Super Eagles' Alex Iwobi is a loss to England - Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Alex Iwobi's decision to play for Nigeria and not England is a loss to the Three Lions of England. 19 year old Iwobi has scored in his last two games for Arsenal and in their last match against Watford scored a goals and assisted another, leaving bigger players like Theo Walcott and Joel Campbell on the bench.

England persuaded Iwobi and his family to play for them after evaluating his talent and enormous potential but the attacker, who is also nephew to Austin Jay Jay Okocha opted to play for the country of his birth- Nigeria.

“Is he a loss for England? Yes,” Wenger said.
“We have values in our club that are maybe not rated always, but one of them is to give a chance to young people and educate them. “Every year we bring players out and not many can say that. I’m happy Alex is one of them.”

Wenger concedes that Iwobi's rapid development has been surprising to witness, but says the forward who made his competitive debut for Nigeria during the lastinternational break has been working on his skills all season long.

"The fans have seen many good players over the years and they know straight away when a player has something special, so they acknowledge that," Wenger told Arsenal Player.

"You cannot cheat people. They've seen how quickly Alex's improved and how well he's played.
"It's surprising how quickly he's integrated into our game. He's worked with us since the start of the season and he has grown, gained confidence and when he came in he had an impact straight away.

"That's benefited from the fact that he knows everybody and they trust him as well. I didn't expect that level of efficiency or impact on the scoresheet."

All eyes on Nigerian politicians as Panama leak exposes secret offshore accounts

Those eager to know the enormity of funds stashed abroad by Nigerian leaders in tax havens may have to wait till May when the details of the #PanamaPapers are fully made public.

Following the startling revelations that serving and former world leaders used Panama-based offshore service provider, Mossack Fonseca, to stash away billions of dollars in tax havens, Nigerians are eager to know how many of the country’s politicians and business moguls are involved.

The leaked files exposed the offshore holdings of 140 politicians and public officials from around the world.

The cache of 11.5 million records are a product of a year-long investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and over 100 news organisations.

Nigeria’s whistle-blowing online newspaper, Premium Times, which works closely with ICIJ, has already named the family of Senate President Bukola Saraki among those reported to have hidden assets in tax havens.

Saraki is currently facing trial for allegedly failing to make full disclosure of his assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau.

There are indications that many notable Nigerians may be named in the leaked records as they are known for operating secret accounts all over the world to hide their wealth.

Several of such secret accounts holding billions of dollars have been traced to former military ruler, Sani Abacha (pictured), who died in 1998.

But there have been unconfirmed reports over the years that it is a common practice among several of the country’s politicians, public officials, business moguls and companies.

The documents so far made public are causing ripples across the world, with prime ministers of Iceland and Pakistan, the president of Ukraine, and the king of Saudi Arabia already named.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s associates are said to have “secretly shuffled” about $2 billion through banks and shadow companies.

But ICIJ says it will release the full list of companies and people linked to them in early May — when Nigerian officials are expected to be exposed as well.

The body said the leaked data “covers nearly 40 years, from 1977 through the end of 2015. It allows a never-before-seen view inside the offshore world — providing a day-to-day, decade-by-decade look at how dark money flows through the global financial system, breeding crime and stripping national treasuries of tax revenues”.

More than 200,000 offshore entities connected to people in more than 200 countries and territories are named in the leak.

ICIJ’s analysis of the Mossack Fonseca files identified 61 family members and associates of prime ministers, presidents or kings in the secret dealings.

Credit: thecablesng

Carvajal reveals what Zidane told Real Madrid players before El-Clasico

Dani Carvajal heaped praise on his Real Madrid team-mates after they stood tall and fought to the death in their 2-1 Clasico win at Barcelona on Saturday.

Madrid overcame a one-goal deficit and Sergio Ramos’ red card to snap La Liga leaders Barca’s 39-game unbeaten streak in all competitions via Cristiano Ronaldo’s 85th-minute winner at Camp Nou.
Ronaldo found the back of the net just two minutes after Ramos was sent off for a second bookable offence in an eventful second half, which saw Gerard Pique’s 56th-minute header cancelled out by Karim Benzema.

Madrid’s come-from-behind win avenged their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Barca in the Spanish capital last November, while closing the gap between first and third to seven points with seven matches remaining.

“We knew it would be difficult. The team has been great, especially in the second half. We never let our heads drop and the team felt comfortable throughout the game,” Carvajal said via Madrid’s official website.

“We stood up tall, looked for more and didn’t settle for the draw. The coach’s ideas were really good. He had been clear to fight to the death. You have to play to win in a Clasico and today we go away with renewed strength.

“We thank the fans for their support and the inspiration they give us in every game. Saraki’s Case At CCT Dead, He Is Now Working Towards 2019 – Senator Misau

The trial resumes tomorrow after it was initially adjourned.
But Misau in his reaction said Saraki could not be edged out of the Senate on the basis of his trial at the CCT because he is in firm control.

“Saraki’s camp is very powerful and even if he is going, he will be the one to determine who succeeds him. We, in his camp, are not thinking of Saraki going, we are thinking of 2019 when he will emerge for the second time and consolidate on the legislative works he is doing. Our thinking is beyond this tenure because of his performance.

“His case at the CCT is political because even those who are with serious cases are moving freely around the country. Saraki’s case is not embezzlement or misappropriation of funds. His is a case of under or over declaration of assets.

“As you know, it is an old case brought forward to pull him down. At what time did they realise that he committed this offence? He was at the Senate in 2011, without immunity, and they didn’t come up with it. Why now when he is the Senate president? But whatever it may be, it is a dead issue,” he said.
Credit : Daily Post
