Factional
leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senators Ali Modu Sheriff and
Ahmed Makarfi, met in Abuja on Tuesday and declared their intention to
end the perennial crises in the party.
The meeting, which was held at an
undisclosed venue in Abuja, was said to have been attended by some
members from the two factions.
At the end of the meeting,
representatives of each faction jointly addressed a press conference
where they said their leaders were working together to reposition the
party.
While the Secretary of the National
Caretaker Committee, Senator Ben Obi represented Makarfi, Dr. Cairo
Ojougboh, represented Sheriff at the briefing.
The short briefing was held at a neutral venue away from each faction’s offices.
In the joint statement, which was read
by Ojougboh and corroborated by Obi, the two leaders said that their
meeting was without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court.
The statement said, “This is without
prejudice to all outstanding matters in court. At a meeting held this
morning between the two of us, a holistic review of the state of affairs
of our great party, PDP, was deliberated upon.
“In reviewing the crisis that has
engulfed our party since the loss of the 2015 general elections after 15
years of uninterrupted leadership at the centre, it became obvious to
both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds and
bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that can
bring sanity to our democratic process.”
