Making a rare start in the Premier League, the Super Eagle grabbed his chance with both hands, also winning the penalty that Sergio Aguero coolly converted for City’s second goal of the encounter.
City took the lead 10 minutes before half time when Fernando glanced a Jesus Navas corner beyond Shay Given, and there was still some time to add a second before the break, after Iheanacho drew a foul from Ryan Shawcross in the 18-yard box and Aguero stepped up to convert with aplomb.
A groin injury forced Stoke to replace Given with Jakob Haugaard at the restart, and the new goalkeeper conceded his first goal in the 64th minute when, following good work by Zabaleta, Iheanacho fire into the net.
The 19-year-old grabbed his brace 10 minutes later. Played in by Wilfried Bony, Iheanacho’s first touch took the ball beyond two Stoke defenders, and he went on to round Haugaard and slot into the net to hand his team a psychological boost ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter with real Madrid.
