Governor Willie Obiano has commissioned three water projects in Anambra State in southeast Nigeria.

The first was the commissioning of a 420,000 litres capacity water scheme with 11 kilometres reticulation coverage at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam campus, located inside the university.

Governor Willie Obiano said that he decided to tackle the water challenge of the institution in line with his approach to issues concerning the critical sectors of Anambra State’s economy in terms of ensuring standard infrastructure.

He expressed hope that the water scheme, aside servicing the water needs of the university, would take care of over 1,000 households around the university environment daily.

Governor Obiano said that his vision was to ensure that the impact of good governance was felt by every citizen, community and institution in the state, maintaining that every necessary infrastructure meant to serve the people of the state must be fixed.

He stated that the project was a product of his visit to the university where he was told of the water challenge faced by students and staff over the years.

The governor also promised a quick completion of the power project in the state which would boost power supply in Igbariam while he advised the students to remain calm and peaceful.

In his speech, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the MDGs’ Desk Officer for the project, Mr Daniel Ezeagwu, highlighted the specifications of the water project that distinguished it as the best.

Commending the Governor, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Fidelis Okafor, said that he would ensure the water needs of the institution were serviced effectively.

Governor Obiano proceeded to Ihiala Local Government Area (LGA) where a water scheme with total storage capacity of 475 litres with 40 kilometres reticulation was commissioned as 20 kilometres of water reticulation in the first phase had been realised.

He assured the residents that work on two major roads within Ihiala would commence and effort was in top gear to ensure 15 hours of electricity supply in the local government area.

At Umunze in Orumba South Local Government Area, the joy of the people knew no bound, as the largest regional water scheme of 870 litres storage capacity with 40 kilometres reticulation was commissioned.

The project executed by the Anambra State government with support of the Federal government under the 2013/2014 MDGs’ conditional grants scheme comprises three boreholes, water treatment facility and 100KVA generator, as it would serve at least 35,000 households daily.

Governor Obiano urged the residents to take ownership of the project and protect it from vandalism, especially the giant generator that would be supplying power for the water scheme and be sure to wave goodbye perpetually to water challenge.
