Minister for Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung and Former Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh, are expected to appear before the House of Representatives’ Committee on Sports, in Abuja on Thursday, to answer questions over Oliseh’s unexpected resignation.
The ex-Juventus and Borussia Dortmund midfielder, is expected to explain his decision to quit the job, with just a month to the crucial AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.
A sports ministry official confirms that the Sports Minister insisted Oliseh be part of the Sports Committee’s hearing on Thursday, and has been invited to give his own side of his resignation story.
The Sports Minister ordered Oliseh not to be sacked when Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), President Amaju Pinnick presented a recommendation of the technical committee that the coach be fired.
The NFF have maintained this briefing is a major distraction as the Super Eagles are preparing for must-win AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.
Last month, Sunday Oliseh quit as the Super Eagles Head coach, just over seven months after he was appointed.
Sunday Oliseh claimed his resignation was due to contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, assistant coaches and himself personally.
He complained of several breaches to his contract with the NFF, such as he being owed four months’ salary and no accommodation provisions received in Abuja which he had been promised.
He also reportedly had challenges managing the players. An altercation between the coach and the team’s former captain and the country’s most capped goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, was said to have led to the goalie’s premature resignation from the team last October.
Oliseh was appointed as coach in July 2015, replacing sacked Stephen Keshi, but the relationship between him and the NFF went awry after Nigeria failed to go past the group stage of the recent African Nations Championship in Rwanda.
The NFF has since replaced Oliseh with Samson Siasia as the new Super Eagles coach. He is assisted by Nigeria U20 coach Emmanuel Amuneke, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu ahead of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt.
