The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi, has identified the over-dependence on imported foreign made products as being responsible for the collapse of Nigeria’s industrial sector.
He said this to reporters after commissioning the remodelled secretariat of the Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry Mines and Agriculture (KADCCIMA).
The Emir said that the over dependence on importation of foreign goods that can be manufactured locally, as well as poor economic policies are some of the contributory factors responsible for the country’s socio-economic challenges.
He explained that the insurgency in Northeast and other related crimes in the country were caused by the death of the Nigerian economy.
Alhaji Sanusi therefore called on the federal government to come up with policies that will compel its agencies, institutions and citizens to give maximum priority to patronising locally made products.
The Emir of Kano also expressed worry that Nigeria, as an oil producing nation, still imports refined petroleum products for its consumption, and also cannot generate enough electricity that will serve the entire citizens.
He argued that the way out of the nation’s economic woes is to support government not to patronise products smuggled into the country, saying such goods were responsible for the collapse of the nation’s manufacturing sector.
On his part, the President of KADCCIMA, Abdul Alimi, stressed the need for government to support the local manufacturing sector in order to enhance the nation’s economic growth.
