The Benue State government says it will probe the payment of 2.4 billion Naira to ghost workers in the state’s civil service.
Over 2,000 ghost workers are said to have been recorded on the payroll system of the state.

A bio-metric staff audit report showed that over 2.4 billion Naira was siphoned annually.

The government said it would prosecute those that had added the ghost workers in the payroll.

The State Governor, Samuel Ortom, and his Commissioner for Finance, David Olofu, on Wednesday, disclosed the development during the presentation of the final report of the Benue State Civil Service Bio-metric Data Screening Exercise.

The Project Consultant, Prince Mkpang, while presenting his report to the Governor, said that over 2.4 billion Naira would be saved annually from the criminal diversion of funds to ghost workers, as a result of the air tight E-data base platform established.

According to Governor Ortom, the savings from the new and improved payroll system, would go a long way to reduce the financial burden on the  government.

The bio-metric exercise would effectively reduce the bloated staff strength from over 21,000 to 17,962 employees for accurate and reliable data going forward.
