Chad’s President Idriss Déby Wins Fifth Term In Office

Chad’s
President Idriss Deby has won a fifth term in office after winning 62%
of the vote in elections earlier this month, official results show.

He has avoided a second-round vote, with his nearest rival, Saleh Kebzabo, taking 13% of votes cast.

On Tuesday, opposition parties said the vote counting lacked credibility.

Mr Deby, who took power in a coup 26
years ago, is seen by Western governments as a bulwark against Islamist
militants in central Africa.

The headquarters of the regional multi-national force fighting Boko Haram insurgents is based in Chad.

The former French colony is also a base for France’s military operations in Africa.

Mr Deby’s supporters celebrated by firing guns into the air in the central square in the capital, N’Djamena.

Ahead of the announcement of the results
late on Thursday, there was a strong military presence in the city, the
AFP news agency reports.

During the 10 April election, there was
an online blackout as access to the internet was cut and mobile phones
were unable to send text messages.

Twelve candidates ran against Mr Deby
and turnout among the more than six million registered voters was 71%,
the electoral commission said.

Opposition politicians allege that hundreds of ballot boxes disappeared during the counting process.

Mr Deby has denied opposition claims
that about 60 soldiers who voted against him have disappeared, the
Associated Press news agency reports.

In the run-up to the vote, protest
marches were banned and four activists campaigning against the president
were given suspended sentences.

Court Jails 70 Years Old Chief For Raping Pupils

An
Osun State High Court sitting in Ilesa has sentenced a septuagenarian,
Chief Moses Adeniyi, to seven years imprisonment for raping two teenage
pupils.

The judgment is contained in a statement
issued by the Information Officer of the Osun State Ministry of
Justice, Mr. Opeyemi Bello, in Osogbo on Thursday.

Adeniyi, who is the Loja, Araromi Otokobo was arraigned in court on Mach 28 2011 was charged with rape and indecent assault.

The prosecution team from the Ministry
of Justice: Tijani Adekilekun, who appeared along with Folasade Adekomi
told the court that the convict offered a free ride to the girls, who
were coming back from school and he drove them to his hotel where he
raped the two teenagers one after the other.

They told the court that the two
offences were contrary to the provisions of Sections 358 and 360
Criminal Code Cap 34 vol.11 Laws of Osun State.

Justice Kudirat Akano held that the
prosecution counsels proved beyond reasonable doubt that Adeniyi
unlawfully had carnal knowledge of the two girls and thereafter
sentenced him to seven years imprisonment.

The statement explained further that
Adeniyi, who was a former neighbour of the victims raped the two girls
aged 13 and 14 who are pupils of St.Margaret Girls School Ilesa in May
2010.

Instead of taking them to their
destination, Adeniyi was said to have taken them to his hotel and took
them inside one of the hotel rooms where he raoed them and warned them
not to shout or tell anybody about it.

After defiling them, he was said to have
wiped their private parts with a piece of white cloth and warned them
against telling anyone what happened to them. He was said to have
threatened them that anyone who disclosed his action would die.

But one of the parents of the victims
was sad to have been told that her daughter was given a free ride by a
man and she went to inquire from the school who the man was.

The girls were said to be afraid but refused to disclose what Adeniyi did to them for fear of death.

They were said to be given an assurance
by their teachers that nothing would happen to them if they told them
what happened before they narrated their ordeal.

The Truth About the Presidential Campaign Funds, By Femi Fani-Kayode @realFFK

The attempt to tarnish my name, paint
me as a common criminal and convict me of wrongdoing in the court of
public opinion without even hearing my side of the story is petty,
shameful and nauseating.

“The truth is like a lion. You don’t have to defend it. Let it lose and it will defend itself” – St. Augustine.
For the last few weeks I have been the subject of absurd and
outlandish headline stories in various newspapers that have accused me
of being a fraudster and that have claimed that funds were transferred
into my bank account by the former National Security Advisor, Col. Sambo
Dasuki and by the Governor of the Central Bank Bank of Nigeria.
They have also claimed that I used public funds for the Presidential campaign of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The attempt to tarnish my name, paint me as a common criminal and
convict me of wrongdoing in the court of public opinion without even
hearing my side of the story is petty, shameful and nauseating.
It is also a reflection of the desperation of those who seek to pull
me down and destroy me simply because my opposition to this government
has been unrelenting.
In January 2015, I was appointed as the Director of Media and
Publicity for the Jonathan/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation by
President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Director-General of the Campaign Organisation was Senator Ahmadu
Alli and the Deputy Director-Generals were Alhaji Ibrahim Turaki SAN
(North) and Governor Peter Obi (South).Chief Tony Anenih, an elderstatesman and one of the most
distinguished and reverred leaders in our country, was the Presidential
Advisor to the Campaign Organisation.
There were at least 10 other Directors and Directorates apart from me
and mine including the Directorate of Mobilisation, which was led by
the respected Professor Jerry Gana and the Directorate of Administration
which was led by Alhaji Aliyu Modibbo. There were also zonal and state
Directors of the Presidential Campaign Organisation in all the zones and
states of the country.
All these names that I have mentioned including all the other
Directors whose names I have not mentioned are, as far as I am aware,
men and women of immense integrity and good character and they have
mostly been either ministers of the Federal Republic or state governors
at one time or the other in our history. It was an honour to serve
alongside such people and I have absolutely no regrets in doing so.
Yet given the fact that I was not the only Director in the Campaign
Organisation and in view of the fact that all the Directors and zonal
and state Directors got their funds from the same source and account as I
did, one wonders why only I and three others should be singled out for
this reprehensible treatment and these false allegations?
I chose to remain silent on the issue up until now simply because the
allegations have not been officially made by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission (EFCC) or anyone else, but the newspapers keep citing
sources “inside the EFCC” as their basis for these shameful
allegations.
Mr. Josef Goebbels, Chancellor Adolf Hitler’s Information Minister
when Germany was in the terrible grip of the Nazi party, said that once a
lie is repeated enough times it becomes truth to those who are
continuously subjected to it. This is especially so if it goes
unchallenged.
I cannot sit by silently as my name is dragged through the mud in
this way and I am convicted in the court of public opinion. This
happened to me once and it took seven years to clear my name. It will
not happen to me again.
Consequently I am constrained to take this opportunity to state the
facts of this matter, set the record straight and await my traducers and
accusers to make their next move. It is indeed time to challenge those
who are making these allegations and to kill the lie.
The fact that my bank account was frozen on the orders of the EFCC
two weeks ago without any explanation is proof of the fact that I am
being targetted and that those who seek to have their wicked way with me
are about to pounce.
Given this, it is important that all the relevant facts are put
before the world before I am subjected to the Dasuki treatment – put
away indefinately and not given the opportunity to defend myself before
the public. Meanwhile, in their usual manner, after this is done, the
EFCC will then flood the media with all manners of lies about my
so-called atrocities which only exist as figments of their imagination.
The allegations of fraud and the receipt of public funds from the
National Security Adviser’s Office and the Central Bank into my bank
account are false.

These allegations are baseless, wicked, shameful and irresponsible.
It is not true that ANY money was paid into my account by or from the
National Security Adviser’s Office, the Central Bank of Nigeria or any
other government agency or institution last year or at any other time.
As the Director of Media and Publicity of the Jonathan Presidential
Campaign Organisation, I was asked to submit a budget for my Directorate
by Chief Tony Anenih, the Presidential Adviser to the Presidential
Campaign Organisation and Mrs. Nenadi Usman, the Director of Finance.
My team and I prepared a budget and it was approved.
Rather than collect cash, for security reasons and the purposes of
accountability, I was advised by the Director of Finance to open a bank
account for the task ahead then, which I did.
The funds were paid into that account in installments at the
beginning of last year by the Director of Finance and each deposit was
authorised and approved by the Presidential Adviser to the PCO, Chief
Tony Anenih. The account through which I was transferred money was a
private company account which was owned by or under the control of the
Director of Finance.
It was the same company and account that was used to send money to
all the other Directors of the PCO and the Zonal Directors, State
Directors and all our PDP governorship and legislative candidates during
the various campaigns.
I made a point of asking what the source of the funds in this account
were and I was told by the Director of Finance that the funds were
sourced from private individuals and private companies who opted to
support and fund President Jonathan’s campaign. She told me that no
money was paid into her company from any government official, account or
agency. This she told me in the presence of witnesses and I believed
her.
I was told that there was a fundraising event held by our party (PDP)
which took place in early January 2015 in which billions of naira was
raised specifically for the Presidential campaign. I believed this to be
true and I had no reason to doubt it.

Our funds were given to us by the president who was the leader of our
party through the Director of Finance of the PCO and we were not in a
position to inquire into the sources of funding of the party’s campaign.
Indeed, it was not our responsibility to do so.
Once I got these clarifications and confirmation, I agreed to receive
the funds into the said bank account and use these for their stated
purpose.
The transfers were made and I used the funds to carry out all our operations during the course of the presidential campaign.
It was an aggressive and well-run campaign and we gave our opponents a
very hard time indeed. It was also very expensive and we barely had the
resources that we really needed but we did an effective job with the
little we were given.
The whole nation, including our friends and our enemies, can bear
witness to that and they saw the excellent quality of our work. Hardly
can anyone dispute this, yet some fail to appreciate the fact that such a
strong showing costs a lot of money. Media and publicity campaigns
cannot be run on goodwill alone: you need cash, and plenty of it.
During the course of the election and after its conclusion, I
submitted detailed accounts of our expenses and evidence of our work to
the Director of Finance of the PCO for onward transmission to the
Director-General of the PCO and ultimately President Jonathan himself
about how the money was spent and they were satisfied.
Given the fact that these were not public funds, the only legal
person that can inquire into our expenditure of campaign funds is
President Goodluck Jonathan who set up the PCO.
I was commended for my efforts by him and I can proudly say that my
Directorate did not owe any individual, service provider, organisation
or media outfit that provided any services to us one kobo at the close
of the campaign.
All our debts were paid and obligations met during and just after the
election. The suggestion that there was any fraud in any of this or
that I colluded and conspired with others to use government money to run
a campaign is false and very insulting.
The suggestion that the money was some kind of “cash bonanza” or
“bazaar” as has been reported by the leading pro-government newspaper in
the country today is childish and absurd.

If that had been the case, I doubt that I would have been foolish
enough to open a bank account to receive government funds or “bazaar
funds” as this would have been easily traced.
If I had anything to hide or if I was doing anything wrong I would
have insisted on collecting cash for my operations which would have been
far easier to conceal.
The fact that the EFCC gained access to my bank account and leaked
details of it to the media including my inflows is not only a gross
violation of my privacy but it is also unlawful.
I was a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ten years ago and
I was a key official in the Presidency thirteen years ago. I had the
honour and privilage of serving my country in these two capacities when
the father of our nation, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, was our president.
Consequently I am familiar with the workings and importance of
accountability, due diligence and due process.
This is why I was very careful with how we managed our resources at
the Directorate and why I appointed a seasoned civil servant, who
retired from the civil service with commendation at the Director level,
as my Director of Finance in my Directorate.
I was also mindful of the fact that I had to be very careful with the
management of funds that were put under my care given the fact that I
had been wrongly accused and viciously persecuted by the Yar’Adua
administration and the Farida Waziri-led EFCC through trumped up and
baseless criminal charges for the previous seven years.
That whole ordeal almost ruined my life and career but God was with
me throughout and He delivered me from their evil because I had done
nothing wrong. On July 1st 2015, I was acquitted by a duly constituted
court of law of all those charges and I give God the glory for that.
Yet the struggle continues. I am appalled at the behaviour of the
EFCC in this latest matter but I am not surprised because they have had
it in for me for many years.
Their almost obsessive interest in me and their motivation to destroy
me is essentially political and partly personal and this has always
been so. In short, just as was the case seven years ago, they are being
used by the powers that be and by forces that are far above them. To
that extent I sympathise with them.
Yet, if this is an attempt to intimidate, silence or distract me they
shall fail because I am not a coward and I do not fear them or those
that sent them to torment me.
And neither will I sit by idly and watch them trying to destroy me
again. Their allegations are malicious and self-serving and there is no
substance or truth in them. We did not run the Presidential Campaign
Organisation or my Directorate with paper or hot air: we ran them with
money. There is no crime in that.
A substantial portion of that money was paid by my Directorate
directly to the media for rallies, television, radio and newspaper
adverts and jingles, together with many other services rendered and we
have all the records and documents to prove it. As stated earlier, those
records have been duly submitted to the relevant quarters and they
commended us for our work.
I did not run the Directorate alone and I had at least 10 Deputy
Directors, Assistant Directors and Sub-Directors, who were all also
appointed by President Jonathan, working under me.
I was responsible for the funding of each and every one of their
various operations. Our entire team was dedicated and we all worked very
hard because we believed passionately in our candidate and our party.
I have yet to hear of any Presidential Campaign Organisation anywhere
in the world that was run without any money and that was funded with
just goodwill.
I might add that we spent far less money than the APC and the Buhari
Presidential Campaign Organisation because they had access to massive
amounts of state government funds and they used those funds effectively.
For every million naira we spent, they spent ten.
They even contracted the services of a famous American media
consultant (the same one that President Obama used in 2008) and paid him
ten million U.S. dollars for his counsel and advice. They had fleets of
cars and buses whilst my Directorate was not even given one vehicle to
get our people around.
The official SUV that was meant to have been given to us for our
operations during the campaign was hijacked and it never arrived.
We were forced to use our personal vehicles and we were glad to do
so. Yet the other side had everything that money could buy. They even
chartered numerous private jets throughout the campaign to get around
the country. Where did they get all their funding from? Why is the EFCC
not leaking stories or talking about that?
Instead of using the EFCC to try to rubbish me and my colleagues and
smear our good names, those that are in power today should tell us where
they got their campaign funds from and how much of it came from the
governments of Lagos and Rivers States.
The two people that headed those two state governments then are now
both Federal Ministers today. One of them, who was the Director-General
of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, was specifically indicted by a
Judicial Commission of Inquiry for using millions of dollars of state
government funds to run the Buhari campaign, yet nothing has happened
and his reward has been to be appointed as a minister.
Again, what about the five billion naira cash that was flown down to
Port Harcourt in Rivers state from Abuja in a chartered plane a couple
of days before the re-run election that took place on March 19th, 2016?
Where did they get that amount of cash from and what was its purpose and
source?
What has the EFCC said or leaked about that? It appears that there is
one law for those who are in power today and another for those that are
not. Why persecute the innocent and leave the guilty? Was it a crime to
fight and lose an election?
If Jonathan had not been a gentleman and had insisted on remaining in
power at all costs or challenging the outcome of the election in court,
would we have the peace that we are enjoying in our country today?
Have those who are behind all these nonsense forgotten all that so
soon or is it that they are just drunk with power and they are on a
mission of revenge? If that is the case are they then worthy of the
power that God has given them and should He not take it away from them
before it is too late and they set the country on fire?
If there was any wrongdoing, can the EFCC honestly put their hands on
their chest and say that those of us that were asked to do a job and
given money to do that job knew anything about it?
Were we the ones that sourced the funds and were we expected to
launch our own private investigation into where the funds came from
before accepting to receive and use them for the job we were asked to
do?
In their heart of hearts they know that the answer to the two
questions are both in the negative. Instead of going after the right
people, they wish to use the situation to embarrass and shame those of
us that they see as the president’s political enemies and critics just
to further defame, malign and humiliate us and destroy our future and
careers.
This is vindictive, petty and wicked and, as long as the Lord is on
the throne, it will not stand. It is a very dangerous precedent and I
sincerely hope that all stakeholders take note of the implications of
what is brewing and going on.
It would be a very dangerous thing and utterly counter-productive for
this government to open a can of worms and try to implicate innocent
men and women who were simply doing their job and who knew nothing about
any wrong-doing or illicit and illegal transactions or bank transfers
of public funds from or to government accounts.
I wish to remind them that they will not be in power forever. Sooner
or later the tables will turn and they themselves will be subjected to
the malicious lies, false allegations, smear campaigns, injustice,
brutality and persecution that they are presently subjecting others to.
It is only a question of time.
Now let the Ancient of Days and He who never sleeps or slumbers, the
God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, judge between this government and all
those innocent men and women that they are demonising and persecuting
and that they seek to torment and destroy.
As long as Jesus is on the throne and our hands are clean, no matter
how long it takes, we shall prevail and ultimately they will pay a heavy
price for their malice, injustice and wickedness.
These are facts and readers can be rest assured that I will say
nothing different to this if and when I am formally asked by anyone or
any agency. When the EFCC begin to leak their falsehood and sallacious
allegations to their agents in the media kindly take note of the fact
that, as usual, they will be telling tall tales and they will be lying.
Now I challenge them to do their worse. I have no fear of them or of
those who have sent them to do this dirty job. May God judge them all
and may He reward them for their wickedness.
Buhari: Naira was strong till I was removed in ’85

President
Muhammadu Buhari has restated his aversion to devaluation, recalling
that the naira was strong until he was removed as head of state in 1985.
Speaking
in Abuja on Friday at a meeting with members of the council of retired
federal permanent secretaries, the president insisted that he was yet to
be convinced that the vast majority of ordinary Nigerians would derive
any tangible benefit from a devaluation of the naira.
Buhari said
that he still holds the conviction that motivated his principled
resistance to devaluation in his first tenure as head of state.
“When
I was military head of state, the IMF and the World Bank wanted us to
devalue the naira and remove petrol subsidy but I stood my grounds for
the good of Nigeria,” he told the retired permanent secretaries led by
Christopher Tugbobo.
“The naira remained strong against the dollar
and other foreign currencies until I was removed from office in August
1985 and it was devalued.
“But how many factories were built and
how many jobs were created by the devaluation? That is why I’m still
asking to be convinced today on the benefits of devaluation.”
Buhari
welcomed the council’s pledge of support for the successful
implementation of his administration’s change agenda, especially in the
priority areas of improving security, curbing corruption and
revitalising the national economy.
“I am glad you have rightly
identified the key issues we campaigned on,” he said. “We need a dynamic
bureaucracy, which will not mislead us into taking wrong decisions.”
The
council of retired federal permanent secretaries was established in
2004 to serve as a platform for retired permanent secretaries to offer
constructive advice to government on key policy issues.
Philip
Asiodu, pioneer chairman of the council, said its members want the
present administration to succeed because Nigeria had already lost many
opportunities for progress.
“We are non-partisan,” Asiodu told the
president. “The interest of Nigeria is paramount to us and we are
anxious that you should succeed.”
Fuel Scarcity: Nigerians Are Being Deceived – Marketer Reveals

BASAM 0 12:07:00

There
are uncertainties about the availability of petrol, as most depots are
without stock, while marketers have reportedly not been importing due to
scarcity of foreign exchange.

According to a major marketer, who chose to remain anonymous, “we
cannot be talking about stock level because there is no stock at all. No
depot has up to 5,000 metric tonnes of petrol, which is about 200
trucks. Once there is supply, it is distributed immediately.”
This was corroborated by sources at Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, who told Vanguard
that the nation cannot boast of any stock level now, as products are sent to states the moment they are imported.
However, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, yesterday,
stated that 1,120 truckloads, comprising 36.957 million litres of
Premium Motor Spirit, PMS (petrol) had been distributed across the
country.
DPR threatens sanctions
This was even as DPR read the riot act to petroleum products marketers
across the country, warning that it would deal severely with any
marketer found sabotaging efforts by Federal Government to address the
fuel crisis currently witnessed across the country.
The DPR, in a statement by its Director, Petroleum Resources, Mr.
Mordecai Ladan, maintained that marketers must ensure that petroleum
products get across to Nigerians timely and at the regulated prices,
especially as every effort is being made to ensure that petroleum
products supply and distribution situation in the country is normalised.
According to him, the security agencies in collaboration with DPR
will arrest and prosecute any errant marketer involved in sabotaging
government’s commitment at making petroleum products readily available
to Nigerians.
On the supply situation across the country, NNPC said six NNPC and
marketers vessels are currently discharging at various depots/jetties
nationwide, while seven NNPC import/shuttle vessels had been programmed
to do Ship-to-Ship operation for onward discharge to inland depots.
Wednesday’s distribution
NNPC also stated that 20 import vessels laden with a total volume of
830.1 million litres had arrived in the month of April for NNPC.
Giving a breakdown of trucks dispatched to selected states on
Wednesday, NNPC said 405 truckloads of petrol were dispatched to Lagos;
130 trucks, Abuja; Kano, 13; Port Harcourt, 54 and Kaduna, 21.
Anambra and Ondo received 13 trucks each, while Sokoto, Borno,
Katsina, Plateau and Kogi received nine, six, 15, seven and 17 trucks,
respectively.
Others are Ogun, 53; Kebbi, 34; Bauchi, 18; Delta, 34; Bayelsa, nine and Benue, 11.
NNPC had also stated that it had 17 days sufficiency, up from three to four days in March at the peak of petrol shortage.
We don’t have products —Marketer
Meanwhile, when Vanguard visited depots at Apapa, there were little or no activities, as they complained of depleted stock.
A depot marketer, who spoke to
Vanguard on condition of anonymity, said: “Nigerians are being conned to
believe scarcity will disappear. How is this possible when we have less
to sell to marketers?
“How is it that NNPC distributes about 36.957 million litres of Premium
Motor Spirit, PMS, and yet we are still left with nothing at the depots?
The mystery is far from our grasp.
“However, what we were asked to do is to help government with our
trucks to ease the dispatching of petroleum product across the country.
“For now, we are practically out of business because there is no
Forex to import and until there is Forex, we are practically rendered
handicap.
“We are supposed to provide the balance of the 40 percent component,
while NNPC handles 60 percent, but that will only end up becoming a
dream due to Forex challenges.”
No Nations Cup but no regrets choosing Nigeria over England, says Iwobi

Arsenal
football club of England and Super Eagles of Nigeria star, Alex Iwobi,
is certain that he will have no cause to regret choosing Nigeria
over England, despite the failure of the team to qualify for the 2017
African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Iwobi, the cousin of soccer
legend, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha opened up completely to TheCable on his
career, challenges, aspirations and all that has to do with his amazing
rising profile in football at his tender age.
Congratulations! So far, things are moving so quickly in your career. How do you feel about this?
I am pleased with the progress I have made this season.
I
was first spotted by an Arsenal scout called Mr Shaun O’Connor when I
was six years old. I was playing for a team called Rippleway under coach
Steven McKenzie. I formally signed for Arsenal when I was eight years.
Life
itself is full of upsets and challenges and this is the case in the
life of a footballer. I became a regular for the Arsenal reserves last
year and this year I was formally promoted to the first team. It has
happened so fast and I am still struggling to believe this.
Arsenal
football club has an abundance of talent – Ozil, Carzola, Sanchez,
Welbeck, Arteta, Mertesacker, Walcott, Chamberlain, Cech to name but a
few. I have learnt a lot from these senior players and I am honoured to
have been accepted into their fold.
The Barcelona game in the
UEFA Champions League was a huge test for you. You competed against the
likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar, did you feel nervous before the game?
It
was a great experience playing at the Nou Camp in front of a capacity
crowd and sharing the pitch with the very best players in the world like
Neymar, Suarez and of course Messi. It was a dream come true and the
culmination of all the effort I have put in over the years at Arsenal.
Messi, as a player, is unstoppable.
I was excited and not nervous
and couldn’t wait to get out on the pitch. The thunderous ovation from
both the Barcelona and Arsenal fans made me realise the importance of
the occasion and what it meant to them. I am glad that although the
result went against us, I gave a good account of myself.
For someone so young, you have seriously improved and matured. How did this happen?
Humility is key to the development of any player. I have total respect
for the manager, my team mates and opponents. One should always be
magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat. A person should never get
carried away by success, as this is easiest way to fail.
I am a
confident person as I have always believed in my own ability. In life
what you put in is what you get back. You have to be disciplined and
prepared to make sacrifices to get to the top. Having said that, I am
far from the finished article. My game is work in progress. I have to
remain dedicated, focused and committed to improving my game.

Iwobi being introduced to the pitch in Nigeria’s last AFCON qualification match against Egypt.

When was the first time ever in your life that you realised, yes, you were immensely gifted by God to be a great player?
I am far from being a great player now; I am gradually finding my feet
in football. I have always loved football and started following my dad
to the park to watch him play as soon as I could walk. My idol then was
Alan Shearer, as I admired his goal scoring abilities.
I have
always wanted to be a footballer. I was once asked what I would be if I
wasn’t a footballer and I couldn’t think of anything else. It’s an
amazing feeling being paid to do what you enjoy most and to bring smiles
to the faces of the fans. What a wonderful feeling! What better job is
out there? I seriously can’t think of any.
What can you say about Arsene Wenger?
Arsene
is a very experienced coach with a lot to offer. His record speaks for
itself. He has brought a certain brand of football to the club and
Arsenal’s playing style – which encompasses pace, technique, constant
movement – is the envy of many clubs.
Arsene has a reputation for
trusting young players and I have benefited immensely by this approach. I
will continue to work hard to justify the trust he has put in me.
Unknown to me, Arsene took an interest in me at a young age and I was
delighted when he first invited me to train with the first team.
What about your education? What plans do you have, with your busy schedule right now?
I
have four B-Tech Papers (which are equivalent to A-Levels). I intend to
do a correspondence course at some point in my career to prepare myself
for life outside football.
Choosing Nigeria as opposed to the
England national team, do you think you can ever regret that decision?
And what part did your dad play in this decision of yours?
I
am Nigerian by birth and was born in Lagos, on the 3rd of May 1996. I
left for the United Kingdom with my parents when I was four months and
have lived in the UK ever since.
When I was first invited by the
Nigeria Football Association, I had a discussion with my dad and he told
me to follow my heart. I also sought the opinion of my uncle Jay Jay
Okocha who shared his personal experiences with me.
There are a
lot of misconceptions about how football is run in Nigeria, but I
decided to see for myself. My message to all footballers and indeed all
sportsmen who live abroad and who have the opportunity to represent
Nigeria is ‘come and see for yourself’.
It has been a joy to play
for Nigeria, the fans, the players, staff and press have been so
welcoming. It was an emotional and unbelievable moment for me and my
parents donning the ‘ Green White Green’ colours of Nigeria in friendly
matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon in Belgium
in October last year.
Nigerians are passionate about football and
I would love to be part of a team that will help the country take its
rightful place in Africa and World football. My decision has been made
and I am looking forward to hopefully representing Nigeria in the years
to come.
I would like to express my profound gratitude to the
England Football Association for the privilege and honour of having 11
caps for England at Under 16, 17, and Under 18 levels.
How
disappointed are you that you won’t be going to the African Cup of
Nations. Some people said things would have been different had you
started the game against Egypt; what do you think?
Sadly,
Nigeria will not be involved in the 2017 Africa Nations Cup. However, I
will never regret my decision to play for Nigeria. I would like to urge
the fans to stand behind the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) and the
coaching staff and players in the quest to return to the big league.
I
respect the decision of Coach Siasia to bring me on in the second half
against Egypt; it is not for me to question his decision as he was,
without a doubt, doing what he thought was in the best interest of the
team. My job is to give my best whenever I am on the pitch. I have a lot
of respect for Coach Siasia and I have learnt a lot in the time I have
worked with him.
I am hoping to make a contribution towards
Nigeria in qualifying for the World Cup and if invited, I look forward
to playing a part in the forthcoming Olympics at Rio, Brazil.
Jay Jay Okocha keeps singing your praise. What can you say about him?
I
am in touch constantly with my uncle Jay Jay Okocha and the best advice
he has given to me over the years is to be my own person and to express
myself while playing football. He says that I should be confident and
to work hard to improve on certain aspects of my game. He is my role
model and I am working hard to be as good as him.
I do not feel
any pressure whatsoever stepping out of the shadow of Jay Jay Okocha. He
is a legend both in Nigeria and abroad and has his own unique style of
playing football which is a joy to watch.
I am however my own
person and I do my best to express myself during matches. I am glad that
people are beginning to recognise me as a player in my own right and
not only as the nephew of the great Jay Jay Okocha.
I’m sure your EPL goals against Everton and Watford will remain indelible in your memory?
Scoring
my first senior goal for Arsenal in a competitive game against Everton
was a magical moment. Sadly, my mum, dad and sister couldn’t come to
watch the game.
However, they watched me score at the Emirates the
following week against Watford. It was an amazing feeling in both games
hearing the Arsenal fans chant my name.
a drastic drop in government revenue in taxes from the brewing giant.
The
results show that taxes paid in the time under review fell from N1,92
billion in 2015 to N340 million in 2016, resulting in an appreciable
drop in revenue for government.
All these is happening at a time
when the Nigerian government is seeking all viable means of increasing
revenue and reducing cost of governance, due to a crash in crude oil
prices from over $100 to $40 per barrel.
Since the crude crash
started about 18 months ago, many companies in the Nigerian market have
been adversely hit, following exchange rate risks on the weakening
naira.
For Guinness, its share price has plunged 42 percent since
the start of 2015, while Nigerian Breweries Plc, the biggest player in
the market, has also fallen by 36 percent.
Former
FIFA President Joseph Blatter on Thursday said he was no longer
suffering as a result of the corruption scandals which led to his
six-year ban from football.
He said this in Zurich, Switzerland capital, at the presentation of his new biography
“I did suffer, Christ’s Passion was also suffering, but I am no longer suffering,” he said.
“I can live with all because I have a clear conscience, I have done nothing wrong.”
Blatter,
80, was banned by FIFA’s ethics committee over breaches concerning a
“disloyal payment” of two million Swiss francs (about 2 million dollars)
made to UEFA President Michel Platini in 2011.
However, the
former FIFA president, who appealed against his ban at the court of
arbitration for sport (CAS), described it as “conspiracy” by the US
justice authorities
Blatter, in his book ‘Mission and Passion
Football’, said his successor, the former UEFA general secretary Gianni
Infantino, once applied “without success” for a job at FIFA’s legal
department.
According to the book, Blatter was also asked by the
Swiss foreign ministry in 2015 to mediate with Burundi’s President
Pierre Nkurunziza over his decision to run for another term.
Nkurunziza’s decision had sparked months of unrest in Burundi.
Blatter
was quoted as saying he offered Nkurunziza an ambassadorial role with
FIFA in exchange for dropping plans to run for a third term, but nothing
came of it.
Oni, one of the 50 executive trainees sent by Dangote refinery to a
study trip at some of the best refineries in the world, says it is a
tough decision to leave her fiance behind in Lagos, but she will
survive.
While relaying her story to TheCable, Oni, who
would be away from the country for the next 12 months, said she got to
be on the team “by God’s grace”.
After graduating from Covenant
University as an electrical electronics engineer in 2014, she served
till 2015, before she applied for the Dangote adverts she saw in the
newspapers.
Oni’s man proposed marriage shortly before she
embarked on the trip two weeks ago, and she could not hide her mixed
feelings about lacking the chance to spend some more time with him.
“There are a couple of people who are even married here; there’s someone who is married with four kids, some have two kids.
“It
is not really a big deal, we’d all cope; we’d all survive. I’m sure
everybody here; the married, the engaged, the non-engaged, I’m sure we
all have loved ones that we are leaving behind and we would all be fine.
“We’d
all be fine eventually. It’s all for the greater good. India is
reputed to have the best technology in the world, I’m hoping they’d pass
whatever knowledge and expertise they have to us, and we would in turn
come to contribute to this landmark refinery that is kicking off in
Nigeria.”
At N299bn, federation account hits rock bottom

It’s official: Nigeria’s central pot, the federation account, has hit one of its lowest balances in the history of the country.
Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, disclosed this on Thursday after the national economic council meeting in Abuja.
As
a result, deductions will not be made before April allocations are
shared by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
Usually,
debts incurred by various tiers of government are deducted as
first-line charges and remitted to the creditors before the sharing of
allocations.
Osun state recently got only N10 million as monthly
allocation after the deduction of its obligations to banks and other
agencies.
But Adeosun said the deductions will be deferred for April “in order to stimulate as well as revamp the economy”.
Many states are currently unable to pay salaries as a result of huge liabilities.‎
FEDERATION ACCOUNT
She
said: “‎On the update of the financial situation of the states, it was
discussed extensively that currently the federation account receipts are
among the lowest that has been seen in recent memory. We are looking at
N299 billion this month and that is because of the very low oil prices
that were recorded in January and February.
“If you remember oil
prices went as low as $28 and $31 and of course that has led to a very
low federation account as a result of which I approached the president
and the governors that we defer the loan deductions from the federation
account entitlement.‎
“The aim of this is to ensure that we
support them through this difficult period to be able to meet salary
obligations. The government is very committed to stimulating the economy
and recognises the ability of states to meet salary obligations is a
very important part of getting the economy moving again.
“To that
end the president ‎approved that deferral. The states have been asked to
submit financial ‎data that would allow us to model and predict how
much support ‎in terms of loan deferrals we might need to give just to
get through ‎this period until the economy recovers.
“I need to
emphasize that it is not a bail-out but a deferral, ‎postponement of
deductions just to allow the states to have the cash ‎that they need to
meet their salary obligation.
“I am very pleased to ‎announce that
all the governors endorsed the request to provide ‎financial data, to
work on biometric and other initiatives to cleanse ‎out fraudulent
entries on their payroll, you may call them ghost workers but it is
being done at state levels very aggressively and the efficiencies that
state governors have already committed to, they have all endorsed those
things as part of this support that we are trying to put in place.”
ECONOMIC EFFECTS
On
how long the deferrals are for, Adeosun said: ‎”The approval I have is
for the current month but with the proviso. What we discussed is the
current situation in the economy requires some actions and what we need
to do is to understand the financial profile of states in detail so that
we can understand how long we need to support them with loan
deferrals.”
On the effect of the deferrals on the economy, she
said: “I think I will switch to say what is the effect of non-payment of
salaries on the economy, that for us is really the issue. We have go to
put money into ‎people’s pockets so that people start spending just to
get the economy ‎moving.‎
“Nobody stimulates the economy by
austerity but by spending. So in some states as you know they state
government is the highest employer of labour so if the state government
is unable to pay, nothing happens.
“We have prioritised getting
the states back into good financial ‎health. Now part of that is this
commitment to fiscal sustainability ‎and that is why we have asked the
states to commit to cleansing their ‎payroll, commit to efficiency,
maximising their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). We have asked them
to give us their financial data so that we can work together to create
financial module and understand what government needs to do to support
the states.”
The‎ minister presented a report at the council meeting on the balance of excess ‎crude account.
It now stands at $2.3 billion, a little increase as a result of accruing interests.
Samantha
Power, US ambassador to the United Nations (UN), on Thursday promised
that the US Embassy in Nigeria would offer technical assistance to help
Nigeria solve its lingering challenge of fuel scarcity.
Power
made the promise on Thursday in Abuja while fielding questions from
reporters during her visit to Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign
affairs.
“Just last night when I was coming from the airport, I
saw long lines at petrol stations here in Nigeria, and I really feel for
the people of this country, who are going through this difficult
economic time,” she said.
“And I think this is something [about
which] the embassy has promised to offer whatever technical advice,
counsel and technical assistance that we can offer. But we know that
some of the best minds in Nigeria are thinking about that, including the
ministers in this government.”
Power said her country would
discuss with Nigeria on diversification of its economy. She noted
that the drop in oil prices was causing hardship in
oil-dependent countries.
The envoy, who had earlier met with some
civil society organisations, said the meeting deliberated on the
deteriorating condition in northern Nigeria, due to the threat posed by
Boko Haram insurgency.
She attributed the poor condition in the
north-eastern part of Nigeria to economic hardship worsened by the
insurgence, which hampered inter-city trade.
“In terms of our
meeting with civil society, Nigerian civil society is one of the most
vibrant, articulate and rigorous in the world,” she said.
“What we
heard a lot about was the question of how the conditions in the north
are deteriorating because of the threat posed by Boko Haram.
“The
economic hardship in the region has been exacerbated by the presence of
Boko Haram and trade across the border has now come to virtual
standstill.
“We heard about very difficult humanitarian conditions
in Northern Nigeria and we will travel to northern Nigeria tomorrow
(Friday) and we will try to get a feel of it for first hand.”
The
envoy said the meeting with civil society organisations also focused on
what more could be done on abductions and kidnappings, particularly with
the Chibok girls.
She said the issue would be discussed with the
federal government by sharing whatever information at the disposal of
the US government in a timely manner.
Solomon
Arase, inspector general of police (IGP), apologised to the leadership
of the house of representatives over the reopening of the Kogi state
house of assembly.
Following the crisis which broke out
in the assembly after five members impeached the speaker, the lower
chamber of the national assembly directed the IGP to seal off the Kogi
legislative chambers until a peaceful resolution was reached.
Though
the directive was initially carried out, the five members who impeached
the speaker later convened and conducted legislative activities within
the chamber.
Speaking when he appeared before the house committee,
which presided over the Kogi crisis, Arase, who pledged allegiance to
the presidency, explained that he solicited for the advice of Abubakar
Malami, the attorney-general of the federation (AGF) on administrative
issues.
He said the discord will be addressed, noting that there was a breakdown of communication.
“I
am a law abiding officer who swore to obey the constitution, there was a
break down somewhere but we will resolve it,” he said.
“There was a communication breakdown, I wouldn’t do anything to breach the constitution.”
Earlier,
the committee chaired by Femi Gbajabiamila, majority leader, described
the failure of IGP to comply with the resolution as breach of the
Nigerian constitution and undue interference on the activities of the
legislature.
He also frowned at the absence of the AGF, who was
reportedly attending a meeting with the US delegation to Nigeria at the
state house.
The committee, however, resolved that the AGF should appear in person by 2pm on Monday.
While
speaking on the outcome of the investigative hearing conducted behind
closed door, Gbajabiamila said: “It was straight to the point; all the
house wanted to know was why the resolution of the NASS was disobeyed.
“And also why the state assembly was reopened.
“The IG gave his explanation, he had sought the advice of the attorney general and the attorney general gave him his advice.
“I think we are making good steady progress and I think we would put this matter to a conclusion next week.”
While
reacting to inquiry on whether the IGP was going to close down the
assembly or not, the majority leader said: “We are not there yet, as you
know the hearing is a process.
“This is the first day and there
are several sides to it. We have taken the deposition of the IG, the
attorney-general will be with us on Monday.
“The resolution of the
house was not to go back to status quo. The resolution of the house was
to conduct a hearing to find out why it hasn’t happened and we are
getting there.”
The
Nigerian Armed Forces have continued clearance operations of the
remnants of suspected Boko Haram terrorists in the nation’s northeast,
killing some suspected terrorists and rescuing persons held hostage.
A statement by a spokesman for the military, Colonel Sani Usman, said
troops of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army on April 21, carried out clearance
operations at Bulari, Tori 1, 2 and 3 during which they successfully
cleared the general area of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists.
During the operation, 10 terrorists were killed and one was captured
alive while two Civilian JTF accompanying the troops lost their lives.
The troops rescued seven civilians and recovered a Volkswagen Golf car, 15 bicycles and various bags of foodstuffs.
In another operation, the troops of 22 Brigade intercepted 26 persons
comprising mostly women and children, coming towards Adah village in
Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, who on interrogation stated
that they were held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists, but escaped, as
their captors were moving towards Lake Chad general area because of
troops’ presence.
Troops of the same Brigade also carried out a fighting patrol, cordon
and search operation along Dikwa-Marte road, Kaje, Selenge, Manekura,
Mane Gana and Gawayi villages.
Although there was no encounter with the terrorists, the troops
recovered five motorcycles, six Boko Haram terrorists’ flags and four
bags of grinded corn in Mane Gana village.
They also rescued three women and five children at the same village.
The rescued persons told the troops that their husbands were actually
Boko Haram terrorists who had ran away towards Lake Chad area due to
immense pressure from the military clearance operations.
The statement further said that troops of Three Battalion also
conducted patrol towards Diema, Sigel and Kala in which they had an
encounter with Boko Haram terrorists.
In the operation, troops killed eight suspected terrorists and recovered two Dane Guns and four assorted batteries.
“The troops of Seven Division Special Fighting Forces attached to 25
Task Force Brigade Damboa, at a checkpoint, arrested a suspected Boko
Haram terrorist, Abubakar Bello and six other suspects carrying 28
gallons of “Turkey” brand of vegetable oil, eight bags of flour, 130
crates of soft drinks and two bags of sugar.
“In addition, five mobile telephone handsets, one external hard drive
and five flash drives, two national identity cards and the sum of
70,000 Naira were recovered from him,” the statement read.
Preliminary investigation discovered that the terrorists now dilute
the vegetable oil with other substances to produce diesel to power their
generators.
The troops of 254 Task Force Battalion in conjunction with vigilantes
and Borno Youths Empowerment Scheme, also carried out clearance
operations at Mufurundi, Kaleri, Masemari, Bego, Bale, Gadzama and
Gagantilo villages along Damboa-Bale-Gwoza road.
During the operation, the troops encountered and detonated an
Improvised Explosive Device (IED), buried by the terrorists at Gadzama
village.
They also encountered Boko Haram terrorists at Bego where they
engaged the suspected terrorists, neutralised them and cleared their
camps within the general area.
In the encounter, the troops killed nine Boko Haram terrorists and
recovered one AK-47 rifle with registration number TH5712 and 17 rounds
of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.
They also rescued 157 persons held hostages by the terrorists.
The troops of 26 Task Force Brigade stationed in Gwoza on Thursday
also intercepted eight suspected Boko Haram terrorists, trying to enter
Gwoza town.
The military said that though they claimed to be farmers coming from
Shiadawey, Takwala and Amdaga Madachi villages respectively, which were
known terrorists hideouts, preliminary investigations showed that they
were indeed terrorists on a recruitment drive.
This was made manifest when the sum of 637,000 Naira was discovered
on Abdullahi Yakubu, who was identified by another escapee/suspected
Boko Haram terrorist as having trading links with the terrorists while
the others were confirmed to have participated in carrying out various
terrorists acts for the Boko Haram terrorists group.
One Ibrahim Bute, 67 years, of Gobara village was arrested by the troops on suspicion of being a Boko Haram kingpin.
Troops of 114 Task Force Battalion of 28 Task Force Brigade also
conducted a fighting patrol along Bitta-Madube-Izge axis same day.
The troops of 117 Task Force Battalion following a tip off, also
arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist who gave his name as Bello
Isah at Mugulvu village.
The unit also discovered and retrieved 29 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) rounds of ammunition hidden at a farm in Gella village.
Colonel Usman said that the troops in various deployments within the
theatre remained vigilant with soaring morale and committed to their
duties of clearing the remnants of Boko Haram hiding in various remote
corners and crannies.
Mum Cries Out After 2yr Old Daughter Dies In Custody Of Estranged Hubby

BASAM 0 02:17:00

A row has broken out over the death of a two-year-old girl, Rachael
Oyeniyi, in a well in Egbeda, Lagos, last Tuesday. Her mother Mrs
Adenike Oyeniyi yesterday alleged foul play in Rachael’s death.

The Nation learnt that the Oyeniyis had not been living together in the last three months.
Mrs Oyeniyi lives in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital; her husband,
Gbenga stays in Gowon Estate, Egbeda, where the incident happened.
Mrs Oyeniyi said she could not believe that her daughter was singing
on the well when she fell into it and died because she had not started
talking properly.

“If our neighbour really heard her sing, why didn’t she
ask her to leave the place? Whenever we spent weekends with her dad,
Rachael usually played with the landlord’s children and not on the
well,” she said.

The 40-year-old woman said she was bathing her second child when her husband came to her place in Abeokuta, adding:

“I heard footsteps in the sitting room but when I asked
who was there, I heard no voice. As I went into the sitting room, I saw
my husband. He frowned his face and asked me to change her clothes. I
declined and reached for my daughter because she had not eaten. As I
went to the kitchen to bring her food, I didn’t see them.”

Mrs. Oyeniyi, a civil servant, said she then came down to Lagos, but
on getting to her husband’s place, she saw him and Rachael sleeping.

She said: “As I tried to carry her beside him, he woke
up and dragged her from me. I even informed his sister who lives in
Ibadan but she did not say anything. I left there around 3pm to avoid
embarrassing ourselves in the neighbourhood.

I even went to the extent of asking a woman on the street
to inform me whenever my husband went out so that I can pick my
daughter. It was around 10pm someone called my parents and told them my
own Rachael was dead. Why was it that day she died? No medical report;
no autopsy.

The reason my husband and I are partially separated is
because of his sister who lives with us. He beats me because of her and
accuses me of insulting her because… I was also told my husband went to
buy bread for Rachael. I can’t believe all I heard because when we were
together, we always sent his sister on errands and also I saw puff puff
with my daughter when I carried her while sleeping.”

Mrs. Oyeniyi said when she saw her husband at the Gowon Estate Police Station, he was incoherent.

She said: “It is really painful. She was buried in Atan
cemetery. Two of my family members at the burial ground told me they
didn’t dig up to six feet. I think they want to exhume my daughter’s
body. I want Nigerians to help me. I want police officers to him me
unravel the truth. Our marriage will be four years in July. I really
miss my baby. I can still hear her cry in my head when she wanted to
follow me on that day.”

Mr Oyeniyi, 40, told our reporter on phone that he won’t comment.
Actress and Producer of Wives On Strike, Omoni Oboli is a year older
today. Her husband Nnamdi Oboli took to his Instagram page to send a
sweet birthday shout out to her with a long epistle.
Read what he wrote below

A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY ONE TRUE LOVE!!! I just want to thank God
for His goodness and mercy for your life and what He has accomplished in
and through you
I only ask for one thing from you Lord; that you keep her in peace and let her heart be steadfast towards You
I ask this because I know that the manifestation of the blessings that you have packaged for her
Would be impossible to contain in her human vessel, so she will need to stay connected under your ever loving banner
I’m not putting these heartfelt words together just to sound poetic
But as your husband I speak with the conviction of one entrusted to speak life to you in the prophetic
Long life and prosperity we often bless many on this joyous occasion
And why not? This prayer covers everything and all we need to mention
May you live long to enjoy the prosperity that God has given you In Jesus name!
Happy Birthday babe!
Love you loads ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ PS: I know you’re leading all the
#WivesOnStrike, but at least I can get a welfare offering. No one needs
to know, cos when you give an offering, the left hand does not need to
know what the right hand is giving #omonioboli #happybirthday
By PHILIP OBIN

It
is either I do not understand economics and how exchange rates work or a
vast majority of us Nigerians still don’t get how we have wrecked our
country with our own curious choices. Just this morning I was listening
to the radio and the lady on air went on and on about how she thought
CBN governor Godwin Emefiele was incompetent and should be sacked
because the naira was now exchanging at 309 or so to the USD.

That
view pretty much echoes the sentiments expressed by many people I know
and it amazes me that there are Nigerians who actually think there is
some magic POLICY that can make the Naira strong in the near term. If my
economics and my understanding of the way the world works are right,
then that is as far from the truth as Jesus Christ is black.

The
simple fact of the matter is that apart from oil that accounts for over
90% of our revenues, we really don’t have much of an economy. We hardly
produce anything, we import even toothpicks, so exactly what policy is
going to be implemented that will turn Nigeria into a top exporting
economy in the near term?

Where
are our Apples, IBMs, Disneys, GMs, General Electrics, Coca Colas,
Empire State buildings, Statues of Liberties, Lockheeds, Citibanks, JP
Morgans, ExxonMobils, NBAs, Super Bowls etc? Let me bring that closer
home. There was a time long ago when Nigeria had a truly strong economy
and the naira was one to the dollar – even exchanged for higher than the
USD, but that Nigeria is not this Nigeria. Sadly that Nigeria was laid
by the British, and this Nigeria (if you don’t believe in the
nonsensical imperialist conspiracies like me) – fueled by the DAMAGING
Indigenisation Decree, has been the creation of us Nigerians.Back then
we had a booming economy.

We
were either the top, or among the top exporters, of timbre, cocoa,
groundnuts, rubber, palm oil, etc, in the world. Nigerians not only
holidayed at home in their villages, at Yankari Games Reserve, at Obudu
Cattle Ranch, at Oguta Lake, at Ikogosi springs, at Gurara Falls, at
Mambilla Platueau, etc, we attracted international tourists who brought
in loads of foreign exchange.

Even
Nigerian schools were foreign exchange earners because they attracted
foreign students. We had different car assembly plants – Peugeot,
Volkswagen, Anamco etc. Nigerian government officials only bought
vehicles assembled in Nigeria for official cars. We had a thriving
sports industry.

We
were not Man United or Chelsea fans, we were Rangers or IICC fans. We
had the Nduka Odizors, people made money from sports. We also had
companies like Lennards and Bata producing school shoes in their
thousands, we had the thriving Nigerian Airways and the Aviation School
in the north that produced some of the best pilots in the world.

In
those days if you were brilliant you were respected much more than the
crass money-miss-road contractors of today. Most of the Aje Butters I
knew had fathers who were university dons. Back then it meant something
to ‘know book’. Our textile industry was alive and well. Just recently I
watched a news report on the textile industry in Nigeria on CCTV News.
Though the main focus was on the comatose status of the industry, I was
stunned by the gigantic Kaduna Textile Mill built in 1957. I could go on
and on.

Today
however, no thanks to our parents (and we must call them out the way
Wole Soyinka did his generation) and many of us (and we should be
remembered for failing our children if we continue like this), we have
destroyed everything. Today for instance Nigerian football (which comes
easy to me obviously) doesn’t appeal to us, we have to fly across
thousands of miles to watch ‘our’ clubs play.

Every
year we collectively burn billions of Naira being fans of clubs that
give us nothing back, but some ‘entertainment value’ – simple pleasures
for which we are ready to destroy the future of our children. Well
people, payback time is here. Even with our ta-she-re money we all want
to wear designer clothes and carry designer bags, Armani, Givenchy,
Louis Vuitton etc.

We
all want to drive jeeps with American specs, our children must now
school overseas and acquire the necessary accents to come back home and
bamboozle their ‘bush and crass’ contemporaries that they left behind.
Who holidays in Nigeria anymore, is there Disneyland here? No one buys
made-in-Nigeria school bags for their children, after all no Superman or
Incredible Hulk or Cinderella on them.

We
are no longer top exporters of anything and the demise of oil means we
have zilch… zero. A country of 170m fashion-conscious people has no
textile industry. We take delight in showing how our made-in-Switzerland
Aso Ebi is different class to everyone else’s. When we help our
musicians grow and pay them millions, they repay us by immediately
shipping the monies overseas to produce their
“i-don-dey-different-level”music videos. It makes no difference that
distinctly Zulu dancers are dancing to a Nigerian highlife song. As
stars concerned they also wed and holiday overseas to impress us all.
All the musicians who acknowledge their Ajegunle roots now speak in a
cocktail of strange accents to symbolise how much they have blown their
monies overseas.

Were
we a more serious people, the highly popular Kingsway Stores of the
past would probably have a thousand outlets pan Nigeria today supporting
a massive agriculture industry among others, but today we have the
likes of SPAR, Shoprite, dominating the retail industry while Kingsway
is dead. And we Nigerians make it a special point to shop from the
Oyinbos who have ‘cleaner shops’, ‘better this and better that’. For our
personal pleasure we don’t mind them dominating us in our own backyard
and shipping proceeds overseas.

I
could go on and on, but I don tire. Even as you are reading this, stop
for a moment and look around you. What you see will probably explain why
we are lucky it is not N1000 to the USD yet. And don’t think for a
moment that it cannot get there. Just continue to wear your Armani gear
and Swiss-made lace, continue to spend your money on Man United,
Arsenal, Chelsea and Barca and encourage your children to do same.

(My
article tomorrow in my Saturday column in This Day is on the Nigerian
champions Enyimba FC – Nigeria’s most successful club – not having a
sponsor, yet Nigerian brands pay over N600m to Man United and Arsenal
for sponsorship to impress us.) Ehhh, no problem, continue to tell me
the NPFL is rubbish or the clubs should clean up their act if they want
sponsorship, mo gbo.

Don’t
curtail your interest in choice wines ( we were the number one
champagne consumers in the world in 2015), continue to love your
American specs, cheer the education ministry for letting schools sink to
pitiable levels, don’t fight them to improve our schools, don’t chide
them for letting schools drop Nigerian history and embrace British,
America and whatever else curricula.

Carry
on with your love of French wines and Chinese silk, don’t bother about
Jamiu Alli when there is Roger Federer. Stock up on your Italian,
American, British products which you cannot live without, including the
‘baby soft’ toilet rolls produced only in that small unique village in
England – the days are long gone since you were a broke student who used
wet newspapers to wipe your butt.

Don’t
even consider holidaying in Nigeria, it’s too dangerous – you have to
fulfill your dream of being Nigeria’s Henry Ford. Don’t listen to people
like me who have a wardrobe full of only cheap adire that is actually
cheaper than just one of your Tom Ford blazers.

Please
keep dressing in fine silk made in some exotic place so you can be
addressed accordingly. Finally keep letting corrupt leaders who have
looted your commonwealth and shipped all the monies overseas get away
because to attack them does not fit your political narrative. Let us
continue with the fine life, let us all continue to work for Oyinbo. But
don’t forget that there is payback time and Emefiele is not your
problem. Time for us all to look in the mirror and take responsibility.

My Absence During Budget Presentation Cost Abia-North Key Projects – Ohuabunwa

BASAM 0 01:01:00

Sen.
Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP Abia-North) said his absence during the presentation
of the 2016 Budget was responsible for his senatorial district’s
inability to attract key projects from the budget.

Ohuabunwa, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency
of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja, said his absence was informed by
the nullification of his election into the 8th Senate by an Court of
Appeal sitting in Owerri, on Dec. 10, 2015.

The appellate court, however, ordered for a fresh election in the senatorial district, which Ohuabunwa won.
He said that his absence at the time, meant that Abia North was not
going to be represented during the deliberations on the budget.

“It affected us because we have 109 senatorial constituencies and
every constituency is scrambling, fighting, struggling to get a bite out
of the national cake, which is the budget.
“First and foremost, the budget is not enough to go round; so, if you
are not there, others will be happy, because you will be counted out
and that was exactly what happened in 2016.
“Because of the nullification of the election, I was not there at the
presentation neither was I there at the consideration of the 2016
budget.
“So what it means is that it was not about Mao Ohuabunwa, but Abia North was not represented.’’

He said that the little Abia-North attracted was worked out because of the good rapport he had with his colleagues.
Ohuabunwa said that he only returned to the Senate in the last week of the budget consideration.
According to him, while he is being distracted by litigations, Abia North is also being distracted and shortchanged.
He urged all those that contested against him to join hands with him
in developing Abia-North, adding that there should be a limit to
litigations.
The senator said that if the distraction continued, he would not be
able to deliver on the promises he made to the people of Abia North.
He listed some of the projects that his constituency lost due to the
election nullification as the Aro-Chukwu Ohafia road projects; work on
the erosion sites at Elu-Ohafia, Ebem, Isuikwuato and Bende.
“I took the Senate ad hoc committee there; they went round to see those areas.
“The idea was in preparation for the 2016 budget; now you might be surprised that those sites would not be attended to.
“On power, the whole Abia-North has been surveyed; the few areas I was able to achieve were through opportunities.
“The Senate had approved the report of that ad hoc committee; so, if I
had been around during the budget presentation, I would have pushed for
it to be adopted as Senate project.’’
