Faleke Reacts To Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Gov. Bello’s Election

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The
 deputy governorship candidate in the November 21, 2015 election in Kogi
 State, James Faleke, has reacted to the judgement of the Supreme Court 
upholding the election of Yahaya Bello as governor of the state.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Faleke said he had no regrets 
challenging Mr. Bello’s election, saying he took the step in “good faith
 to protect the interest of the over 240,000 electorates that voted for 
the Audu/Faleke ticket”.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Faleke was the All Progressives 
Congress, APC’s running mate in the November election before the ticket 
holder, Abubakar Audu, died as he led in declared results.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr. Faleke challenged the APC’s decision
 to nominate Mr. Bello as its new candidate for a supplementary election
 that held in December 2015.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After a prolonged legal tussle at the high court and the appeal court, the Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Mr. Bello’s election.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A seven-man panel headed by Justice 
Sylvester Ngwata affirmed the election after listening to the closing 
statements of all the counsel.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The court said it would provide reasons for its decision on September 30.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In his reaction, conveyed in a statement
 by Duro Meseko, Mr. Faleke said it would have amounted to a “betrayal 
of the sacred trust of the people who reposed implicit confidence in the
 Audu/Faleke ticket not to have defended the sanctity of their vote up 
till the Apex court level”.</div>

Permit me to indulge in a quick aside and take you into a brief journey 
of discovery into the deep and devious mind of Lugard. On
 September 8th 2015, in an essay titled 'Lord Lugard's Magic and Flora 
Shaw's Spell', I wrote the following:<div>

"In 
1916, Lord Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, the 1st Baron Lugard, the 
fourteenth Governor of Hong Kong and the first Governor-General of 
Nigeria, said the following:</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
 “Lagos has for 20
 years opposed every Governor and has fomented strife and bloodshed in 
the hinterland. I have spent the best part of my life in Africa; my aim 
has been the betterment of the natives for whom I have been ready to 
give my life. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
But after some 29 years, and 
after nearly 12 years as Governor here, I am free to say that the people
 of Lagos and indeed the westerners are the lowest, the most seditious 
and disloyal, the most purely prompted by self-seeking money motives of 
any people I have met.”</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
As if that were not bad enough, <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_542019746" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">two years later</span></span>, on September 25th, 1918, in a letter to his colleague Walter H. Lang, Lugard wrote the following: </div>

</div>
<div>
“The
 Hausa-Fulani has no ideals, no ambitions save such as sensual in 
character. He is a fatalist, spendthrift and a gambler. He is gravely 
immoral and is seriously diseased that he is a menace to any community 
to which he seeks to attach himself.”</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Lugard didn’t stop there. In his book titled 'The Dual Mandate' (pg. 70) of 1926, he wrote the following:</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
“In
 character and temperament, the typical African of this race-type is a 
happy, thriftless, excitable person. LACKING IN SELF-CONTROL, 
DISCIPLINE, AND FORESIGHT. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Naturally 
courageous, and naturally courteous and polite, full of personal vanity,
 with little sense of veracity, fond of music and loving weapons as an 
oriental loves jewelry. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
HIS THOUGHTS ARE 
CONCENTRATED ON THE EVENTS AND FEELINGS OF THE MOMENT, and he suffers 
little from the apprehension for the future, or grief for the past. His 
mind is far nearer to the animal world than that of the European or 
Asiatic, and exhibits something of the animals’ placidity and want of 
desire to rise beyond the State he has reached. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Through
 the ages THE AFRICAN APPEARS TO HAVE EVOLVED NO ORGANISED RELIGIOUS 
CREED, and though some tribes appear to believe in a deity, the 
religious sense seldom rises above pantheistic animalism and seems more 
often to take the form of a vague dread of the supernatural. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
HE
 LACKS THE POWER OF ORGANISATION, and is conspicuously deficient in the 
management and control alike of men or business. HE LOVES THE DISPLAY OF
 POWER, but fails to realise its responsibility… he will work hard with a
 less incentive than most races. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
He has the 
courage of the fighting animal, an instinct rather than a moral virtue… 
In brief, the virtues and defects of this race-type are those of 
attractive children, whose confidence when it is won is given 
ungrudgingly as to an older and wiser superior and without envy. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Perhaps
 the two traits which have impressed me as those most characteristic of 
the African native are HIS LACK OF APPREHENSION AND HIS LACK OF ABILITY 
TO VISUALISE THE FUTURE.”</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
These
 were the views of the principal architect and great grandfather of our 
modern nation-state whose wife, Flora Shaw, gave us the name 'Nigeria'. 
When translated from latin that name means "the area of darkness". </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
To
 the both spouses we were nothing but that darkness and a convenient 
commercial venture which was to be milked dry for its mineral 
resources. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
That was the mindset of the man who
 famously proclaimed that northern Nigeria was the "poor husband" whilst
 the south was the "rich wife" and that "their marriage must last 
forever". </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The fact that that "rich southern 
wife" has been held back, brutalised, traumatised, cheated, robbed, 
raped and sodomised over the last two hundred years by that "poor 
northern husband" is of no issue to evil-minded, greedy and calculating 
men like Lugard.  </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Theirs is to keep our people
 in perpetual bondage and to ensure that our internal colonial masters 
continue to destroy our destinies, smite our fortunes and blight our 
future. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
And nothing
 seems to have changed. Two hundred and twelve years after Dan Fodio's 
onslaught in what was to later become northern Nigeria and fifty six 
years after his great grandson, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the erstwhile Saurdana
 of Sokoto and the man that I have described as the 'second Mahdi of 
Nigeria', proclaimed that it was his intention to "dip the Koran in the 
Atlantic ocean" and thereby Islamise and conquer the people of the 
south, their descendants are attempting to do precisely the same thing 
under the leadership of Muhammadu Buhari. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Chief
 Solomon Asemota SAN captured the moment in a graphic and accurate 
manner in an excellent essay part of which reads as follows:</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
"Islamist
 Jihadists of the Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri Ethnic Nationalities, who are
 Negroid immigrants to Nigeria, are pushing the nation to an implosion. 
It is therefore imperative that the remaining 386 Ethnic Nationalities 
of Nigeria should, as a matter of priority, convene a Conference to 
demonstrate to the few Islamist Jihadists of the three Ethnic 
Nationalities the grave danger of Islamism as a system of governance.  </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Nigerians
 are reminded that the present distress in the nation is not an act of 
God but man-made. The brazen and audacious imposition of Islamist 
Jihadists into key positions in the country is not an expression of 
religious piety but a deliberate manipulation of religion for cultural 
and political domination by three Ethnic Groups. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
This
 Agenda commenced in 1975 after the overthrow of General Gowon. The 
Islamist Jihadists are a violent and domineering strain of Islam

Asemota
 has put it very well. This is the challenge that we face in Nigeria 
today. Buhari, who I have described as the 'third Mahdi of Nigeria' has 
perfected the script and he is executing the master plan and the 
not-so-hidden agenda with ruthless precision. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
It
 is left for us to either continue to act as if all is well and continue
 to wallow in our ignorance, self-pity and shameful cowardice or to 
stand up, step up to the plate, confront the challenge, say it as it is,
 do what is necessary and resist it with every fibre of our being. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Those
 that believe in the agenda of the three Mahdi's and that subscribe to 
their views are nothing short of modern-day terrorists and their intent 
is to kill, destroy, enslave and subjugate.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We 
must never succumb to them. We must resist their tyranny and oppression.
 We must shed the toga of political correctness and uproot them from our
 land. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We must remember who we are, where we came from, what we stand for and refuse to shy away from fighting for our rights.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
The
 'gospel' of Usman Dan Fodio and his legacy of blood, compulsion, death 
and destruction cannot be a lasting foundation for any civilised 
modern-nation state and we must rid ourselves of it. Such a foundation 
is not of God and therefore it cannot endure.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We
 must repent and make reparations for the oceans of innocent blood that 
was spilt in our nation by Usman Dan Fodio and his descendants over the 
last two hundred years and we must appease the affected souls.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
We
 must pray to the Lord God of Hosts and to the God of Heaven for 
forgiveness for our cowardice and complicity and we must rededicate our 
nation to the Ancient of Days if we want to break the spell, break the 
curse, rid ourselves of the jinx and be free from His judgement.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Permit
 me to end this contribution with a word for those that have chosen to 
support and assist our collective oppressors and who consistently defend
 and rationalise their wickedness, tyranny and murderous ways. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I proclaim that the blood of all those that have been slaughtered 
over the last two hundred years in the name of ethnic domination, 
conquest and jihad shall haunt you and yours from generation to 
generation. The Prophet Obadiah said, </div>

“all 
your allies will turn against you. They will help to chase you from your
 land. They will promise you peace while plotting to deceive and destroy
 you. Your trusted friends will set traps for you, and you won’t even

Members of the Islamic Movement in 
Nigeria (IMN) under the umbrella of the ‘Save Zakzaky’s Life Group’ has 
threatened to occupy Abuja in thousands if their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim 
Zakzaky is not released.</div>

The group in a statement signed by its 
Coordinator, Malam Bashir Mafara also accused the Buhari-led government 
of conspiring with foreign and international allies to wipe out the 
movement.</div>

The group further observed that there is
 a deliberate and calculated delay by Nigerian Government to release 
Zakzaky, who has been in detention without trial since December 2015, 
after the clash between the Nigerian Army and the IMN.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He added, “at this point, SHAIK 
ZAKZAKY’S LIFE GROUP OF NIGERIA, after a carefully and sensitive 
analysis,  has realised that,  Buhari’s government is deliberately 
frustrating the life of Shaik Zakzaky in custody, with its worrisome 
hidden agenda; if not,  why not release him to go for a proper medical 
examination; why not take him to the court of law; why are you violating
 the rule of law?”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The group called on President Muhammad 
Buhari’s government to release Zakzaky unconditionally within two weeks 
from today, adding that, “at the expiration of the deadline and without 
the release of Zakzaky, members of the movement including men, women and
 children, would storm Abuja,  Nigeria’s capital,  for a peaceful and 
well organized “SIT AROUND”, and we would not leave until our leader, 
Zakzaky is unconditionally released.”</div>

Ahead
 the gubernatorial elections in Edo State this weekend, Governor Adams 
Oshiomhole has said due to the track record of the All Progressives 
Congress ( APC) in the state, its going to be a smooth victory for his 
party.</div>

Speaking to State House Correspondents 
on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Oshiomhole  stated that Edo people 
had never had it so good like under the eight year reign of the APC.</div>

He said, “For us it is fun, when you 
have a good report card, you are anxious to go and show to your parents 
that you did well in school so that you can ask for support to go to 
secondary school. It is when you fail that you cry and find a way to 
make excuses.</div>

“We have worked for Edo people and there
 is no ward of the 192 wards that you will not find standard government 
project, whether it is road, school, health centre, water and these are 
things they have never seen for 10 years of PDP.</div>

The governor asserted that his 
administration has rebuilt  schools and Edo teachers are paid as at when
 due and the teachers are properly motivated, that only qualified 
teachers are in the  classrooms adding that from the situation where Edo
 used to be 23rd in WAEC and NECO but last year the state came 2nd.</div>

“With all these, there is no way the 
people will vote for a party that had been given them excuses. I have no
 doubt whatsoever that anytime, anyday, a fair minded Edo man will vote 
APC, He added.</div>

On  fears that certain governors are 
ready to forment trouble during the election, he accused the River state
 governor ,Wyesome Wike and his Delta counterpart, Ifeanyi Okowa of 
importing militants to Edo to destabilise the elections.</div>

The
 new militia, the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, on Monday 
announced that its strike force blew up the Afiesere-Ekiugbo pipeline 
belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) in 
Ughelli North LG Area of Delta State.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a statement e-mailed to THISDAY in 
Asaba the group claimed that it successfully carried out the attack on 
the oil facility to prove the ineffectiveness of the hordes of security 
personnel deployed in the Niger Delta region by the Federal Government.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It said that it carried out the attack at about 11:30 pm on Sunday.<br />
“The Opudo strike force, at about 11:30 pm on Sunday, September 18, 
2016, struck the Afiesere-Ekiugbo delivery line in Ughelli, operated by 
NPDC/Shoreline.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The statement signed by the spokesman of
 the militia, “General” Aldo Agbalaja, also warned that its destructive 
campaign code-named “Operation Crocodile Tears” targeting oil and gas 
facilities in the Niger Delta outside creeks would continue until its 
demands were met.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The Operation Crocodile Tears is not 
slowing down, but determined to achieve target”, the statement, adding, 
“Until the federal government takes</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
the proper steps, this song will continue to play.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The group, which also had harsh words 
for major oil companies operating in the region, labeled the 
government’s new military initiative in the oil-rich region? code-named 
“Operation Crocodile Smile” as a scam designed to coverup financial 
fraud in the nation’s<br />
“military system.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The statement said in part, “This is to 
once again emphasize our earlier revelation that the so-called Operation
 Crocodile Smile is nothing but a scam: some jumbled job, sewn together 
to retire some recently embezzled military budget. Were it a serious 
endeavour, as the entire military system has sought to bamboozle 
Nigerians and the entire world to believe, the half-baked operation 
would have at least been reaping marginal results, asides those wrong 
arrests, lacking in intelligence, that it had realised.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“This is to you, Gen Buratai, let your 
crocodile continue to smile, your time for reckoning is at hand, 
probably by the time the smiley crocodile finally sinks, you will see 
its tears and blood. Under your nose, the very task of guarding oil 
assets (which we consider a waste of time, resources and a failure of 
priorities) will fail because you are both insincere and incompetent.</div>

“The Niger Delta Greenland Justice 
Mandate is just starting, you are yet to see what we are about, by the 
time the alpha operations are initiated, you will need more than these 
fighter jets to keep your troops safe in any part of the Niger Delta.</div>

He said, “<em><strong>On the issue of suspension I am less bothered. 
Perhaps that is the sacrifice I will have to make for the country and 
for us to be able to deal with the issues of corruption in the House but
 I doubt very much that the 360 members, having followed the events of 
last two months, and of course the letter I wrote to each member last 
week, I doubt very much if they will go on the floor of the House and

The Kano born lawmaker reiterated his commitment to follow to the 
latter his allegation of budget padding against speaker of the House of 
Representatives Yakubu Dogara, and other principal officers regardless 
of if he was suspended or not.<br />

Former
 first lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Patience Ibifaka Goodluck Jonathan, has 
given the Economic and Financial Commission, EFCC, 14 days with effect 
from September 18 to defreeze her accounts and tender a public apology 
to her or face a legal action.<br />

Mrs. Jonathan gave this ultimatum through an open letter to the EFCC 
Chairman, Ibrahim Magu by her solicitor and Senior Partner, First Law 
Associates, Timipa Okponipere Esq.<br />

In the letter, Okponipere urged the anti-graft agency to leave Mrs. 
Jonathan alone, adding that if the Commission fails to adhere to this 
warning then: “We shall file an action at the African Commission on 
Human Rights at the Gambia demanding N5 billion in exemplary and 
punitive damages.”<br />

The letter reads: “There is no established legal or political 
precedent for what the EFCC is currently doing to our client. How many 
former First Ladies in Nigeria have received the Patience Goodluck 
Jonathan Treatment (PGJT) to have warranted the EFCC to engage in the 
effrontery to freeze our client’s accounts and subject her to public 
opprobrium, ridicule and disgrace? This nonsense must stop forthwith.<br />

“Our client is a respected senior citizen of international repute, a 
retired Permanent Secretary and the immediate past First Lady of the 
Federal Republic of Nigeria. Our Client is a law-abiding citizen who has
 never or at all been the subject of any criminal and/or financial 
investigation, whether at home or abroad. Accordingly, she has not been 
found guilty of any criminal conduct throughout a sparkling public 
service career spanning over 35 years.”<br />

“During the 5 years our client served as First Lady of the Federal 
Republic of Nigeria between May, 2010 and May, 2015; she was the 
Initiator/Founder of the A. ARUERA WOMEN FOUNDATION as well as the WOMEN
 FOR CHANGE INITIATIVE; both of which Non-Governmental Organizations 
(NGOs) substantially contributed to the 35 per cent affirmative action

 inauguration of some poultry farms in Rivers State, the News Agency of 
Nigeria (NAN) reports.</div>

The farms are located in Elele, Ikwerre local government area of the state.</div>

“The Presidential Amnesty Programme has

The
 Indigenous People of Biafra has declared September 23 (Friday) as the 
day all supporters of Biafra will sit at home without going anywhere or 
doing any work.<br />

This, it said, would be a protest against the continued detention of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by the Federal Government.<br />

It enjoined the Igbo and all those who believe in the Biafra ideology
 all over the country to shut down their businesses and stay at home<br />

It ordered IPOB members outside the country to stage open protests in their areas on that day.<br />

In a press statement from the group’s Spokesperson, Emma Powerful, 
made available to our correspondent in Awka, Anambra State, it said, 
“The IPOB worldwide protest will take place in all the countries across 
the globe, except in Biafra land and Nigeria where church services will 
be held.”<br />

The statement added, “Every IPOB member and other Biafrans living in 
Nigeria and Biafra land will stay in their homes on that day.<br />

“We also ask that all markets, schools, banks, transport companies 
and manufacturing companies to close on that day in solidarity with the 
overall objectives of the Biafran restoration process, irrespective of 
your persuasion or affiliation.<br />

“We call on Okada riders, Keke drivers, bus drivers, owners of 
luxurious buses and drivers, the 911 drivers and owners, the National 
Union of Road Transport Workers and National Association of Transport 
Owners to withdraw their vehicles from roads on that day in solidarity 
with IPOB worldwide for the release of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and
 for the total liberation of the Biafra people.<br />

“We also advise every Biafran to switch off their communication 
devices, especially mobile phones, on that day from 8am to 4pm in 
solidarity.<br />

“This will let the world know including communication companies that 
Biafrans are serious towards the release of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi 
Kanu, and the restoration of the ancient and sacred sovereignty of God’s
 nation, Biafra.”<br />

It maintained that “only IPOB members in Biafra land and Nigeria are 
exempted from street protests on this occasion”, noting that, “Any 
country where there are IPOB family units that doesn’t participate in 
this global event will be shut down.”

A
 failure to save for the rainy day as well as poor monetary and fiscal 
policies were partly responsible for the country’s current recession, 
according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).<br />

The CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele who disclosed this at an interactive
 session with media managers in Lagos at the weekend noted that a number
 of external factors, particularly the crash in global oil prices, also 
contributed to the nation’s economic woes.<br />

“I must confess that what is happening today is a result of a global 
crisis in the sense that we’ve seen commodity prices dropping, we’ve 
seen geopolitical tensions all around the world,” he said.<br />

Emefiele recalled that when it was very buoyant, Nigeria frittered 
away about $66billion or an average of $6billion per annum funding 
Bureau de Change (BDCs) operations over 11 years period, beginning from 
2008, when the country’s foreign reserves stood at $62billion, and oil 
price about $120/barrel. He said such funds could have been kept for the
 rainy day or invested in infrastructure development that would have 
buoyed economic activities.<br />

Emefiele said if the government heeded his advice to sell off some of
 its equities in oil and gas assets, Nigeria could make up to $20billion
 that could stimulate the economy and boost spending.<br />

According to the CBN boss, efforts at jump-staring the economy are 
being circumvented by the banks that are flouting the policy on lending 
to the real sector by diverting CBN proceeds into buying treasury bills 
and bonds for higher yields instead of lending to businesses.<br />

Explaining how Nigeria got into such a dire situation, the worst in 
29 years, Emefiele recalled that not only did the country indulge in 
frivolities, including high taste for imported products, the waste in 
the system began much earlier dating back to the discovery of oil in 
commercial quantities in the mid-1950s.<br />

“If we had held strongly to our potential in agricultural sector and 
in the same vein held strongly to the potential that we have because we 
found oil in Nigeria, our story would have been different today,” he 
argued.<br />

Apart from abandoning agriculture revenues for petro-dollars, he 
said, successive government failed to plan with the proceeds from export
 sales, which compounded issues for Nigeria, unlike Norway, which 
invested its fishery and oil proceeds in a Sovereign Wealth Fund now 
worth about $873 billion.<br />

The CBN governor said: “Unfortunately, we didn’t plan this way for 
our people, and that is why we are where we are today. I will give you a
 few examples .In September 2008, Nigeria’s FX reserves stood at 
$62billion. What did we do with $62billion at a time crude price was 
almost $120 per barrel?<br />

“What we could have done was to save the money, if we couldn’t save 
the money, invest it in infrastructure and in industry that will grow 
productivity and wealth of our people.<br />

“At that time, the Central Bank went about licensing Class A, Class B
 and Class C Bureau de Change. In 2005 the CBN was amongst a few central
 banks in the world allocating dollar cash for bureau de change 
operations, and by the time it was stopped in January 2016, the CBN had 
disbursed $66billion to fund cash operations of BDC in Nigeria. What 
that meant in 11 years is that we spent $66billion funding operations of
 BDC, which came to an average of $6billion in a year.<br />

“If we had thought of other ways to utilise our reserves in 2008, 
when it was as high as $62billion, certainly we will not be where we are
 today.”<br />

Emefiele also noted that the continued fall in the price of oil at 
the international market is not helping matters, with reserves on a free
 fall.<br />

“Between August and September 2014 up till this moment, which is 
about two years, we have seen a consistent drop in prices of crude to 
the extent that by March 2015 precisely, our reserve had dropped to 
$31billion, at that time crude price had dropped to $48 per barrel. At 
that time too, the country’s receipt from export of crude dropped to 
$1.3billion. At the same time, the demand for forex, the demand for 
import had remained high.”<br />

On taking proactive measures that could have checked the recession, 
the CBN governor hinted that Nigeria may have been misled by its foreign
 allies when it adjusted its currency.<br />

The currency adjustment hiccups notwithstanding, Emefiele disclosed 
that the flexible exchange rate policy is yielding fruits by fetching 
$1billion in the last three months.<br />

“I feel confident that if we continue the way we are going, managing 
the situation in a way that encourages foreign investors and all those 
who have foreign currencies to bring them in to support our economy, 
there will be more inflows of foreign exchange into the system,” he said

The
 Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has announced plans by the Buhari 
administration to launch a new housing finance initiative.<br />

Under the proposed scheme, the Federal Government is planning a 
mortgage system that will catalyse the development of the mortgage 
market in Nigeria with the provision of single digit interest rate 
mortgages and longer repayment periods such as 20 years.<br />

The proposed scheme also aims to provide 300,000 affordable homes 
supported by mortgages and creates 700,000 new jobs across a range of 
disciplines and professions.<br />

The minister who made this known at the Annual Conference and General
 Meeting of the African Union for Housing Finance (AUHF) noted that with
 housing deficit at over 17 million, Nigeria was ripe for radical 
intervention in the provision of housing.<br />

She said: “We are committed to fundamentally addressing historical 
challenges to housing. This requires innovative financial solutions that
 will stimulate housing development, related industries, create jobs 
across the nation and satisfy yearning for security through home 
ownership.”<br />

The minister, represented by Mr. Seye Senfuye said: “Nigeria deserve 
to acquire affordable homes, built to a standard of good quality, 
located in well serviced estates that will create ideal environments in 
which they can raise their families, instead of being saddled with the 
challenges and risks of trying to build their homes organically.<br />

“Due to the current high rates of interest, we believe that 
government intervention to bring down rates and enhance affordability is
 needed and we are committed to doing this.”<br />

The Central Bank’s Director of Other Financial Institutions, Ahmed 
Abdullahi, noted that the housing market in Africa and in Nigeria is 
underdeveloped, and that the contribution of the market to the GDP in 
the country is less than one per cent, compared to the United States, 
which is about 80 per cent.<br />

Abdullahi stressed the need to address absence of long-term capital 
that could be used to create mortgages, high cost of building materials,
 and problems of registering and enforcing property rights.<br />

His words: “Mortgages are not short-term but the deposits we have in 
the banks are short-term liabilities, and you cannot easily use them to 
create mortgage. So, we need to address these challenges before we can 
improve the contribution of the market to the GDP.”

Governor
 Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has warned proprietors of private 
schools in the country against using the current economic recession as 
an excuse to deny children of the less privileged, admission through 
hike in fees.<br />

He gave the warning when he received the President of National 
Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) North West Zone, 
Hajiya Maryam Magaji, in Katsina.<br />

The governor, who urged members of the association to be innovative 
and prudent in the management of their institutions to ensure affordable
 school fees, revealed that less than 20 percent of private schools in 
the state would have been closed down if the government applied 
strictly, the rules and regulations guiding them.<br />

He, however, cautioned that the present administration would not 
allow some substandard schools, he described as “Room and Parlour 
School” to continue to operate in the state.<br />

He also warned the private schools’ proprietors against cheating 
during examination in their institutions to bring to an end, the 
disturbing growth of “Wonder or Miracle Centres” across the country.<br />

The governor stressed that examination malpractices had destroyed the
 image of the nation’s education sector and the future of many schools 
and the children of the elite who were the major culprits. Earlier, 
Hajiya Maryam Magagi, said the association was determined to build a 
closer cooperation between government and its members to fulfill their 
obligations.<br />

She lauded the commitment of the Masari administration to all sectors
 of the economy and the giant strides it had recorded in the education 
sector.

At
 least eight people were killed outside a church in a suspected Boko 
Haram attack carried out by gunmen on bicycles in northeast Nigeria, 
local residents said on Monday.<br />

The attack happened shortly after morning service on Sunday in 
Kwamjilari village, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) east of the town of 
Chibok, in Borno state.<br />

“Some of the worshippers remained around the church and the gunmen 
opened fire and eight men died,” said Luka Damina, from nearby Kautikeri
 village, where locals fled.<br />

The attackers set fire to homes and fields of maize that were almost

The chief said soldiers were later deployed to Kwamjilari from Chibok
 — the scene of a notorious kidnapping in 2014 when more than 200 
schoolgirls were seized.

An 18 year old herdsman, Haruna Ali, has been sentenced to two years 
imprisonment by a Chief Magistrate Court Ekiti state for unlawfully 
grazing his cows in a farmland in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. Haruna 
was arraigned before the Magistrate, Idowu Ayenimo,  on Jan 22nd 2016 on
 a two-count charge of willful and unlawful damage of farm crops at Ago 
Aduloju in Ado-Ekiti. The case after the initial hearing was adjourned 
to today September 19th. <br />
<br />
The magistrate while delivering judgement, ordered that the sentence 
should run concurrently, explaining that the term was minimal because 
the offence was committed before the Grazing Law was enacted in the 
state.

The Federal Government has released proof of its efforts to  secure the 
release of the Chibok girls, who were abducted from their  school in 
April 2014 by Boko Haram, confirming President Muhammadu  Buhari’s 
commitment to the safe return of the girls.</div>
<div>
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, September 16th, the 
Minister of  Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the 
efforts included  swap arrangements dating back to July 2015 which, 
however, failed for various reasons, including last-minute issuance of a
 new set of demands by Boko Haram elements.</div>

He said that in spite of the failure of the past swap agreements, the 
government and the security agencies have not relented in the bid to  
ensure that the Chibok girls are released safely, in line with the 
mandate given by the President who, upon the assumption of office,  
directed security agencies to urgently fashion out strategies to trace, 
 locate and ensure the safe and successful release of the Chibok<br /> girls.</div>

Giving details of the first swap agreement, which was the most  
promising, Alhaji Mohammed said it failed in the last minute because  
Boko Haram decided to make a new set of demands, even after all 
arrangements had been made to exchange some Boko Haram fighters for the 
girls.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span></span>"Precisely on 17th July, 2015, the DSS opened negotiations 
process  with the group holding the Chibok girls. However, in return for
 the  release of some of these girls, the group also made some demands. 
These included the release of some of their fighters arrested including 
 some involved in major terrorist actions, resulting in several  
fatalities, and others who were experts in manufacture of locally  
assembled explosives. This was difficult to accept, but appropriate  
security agencies had to again inform Mr. President o these demands, and
 its viewed implications. Again Mr. President gave his assent believing 
that the overall release of these girls remains  paramount and 
sacrosanct. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Meanwhile, following the above development, Government and the  
security agencies had sufficient leverage to work out the modalities of 
 the swap. These included creating the safe haven, or necessary place of
 swap and working out the logistic details. Based on this, the  DSS 
availed other critical sister agencies of this new situation.  
Immediately, the Nigerian Army and the Air Force sent some specialists 
to commence a detailed arrangement for the swap. This was during the  
last week of July 2015 and 1st week of August 2015. The officers  
representing the various agencies worked out the logistic details, such 
as the number of persons to be swapped i.e. number of girls and  
detainees to be exchanged, the vehicles and aircraft, as well as  
safeguards, i.e. safety of the persons, including the location of the<br /> swap. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"When it was finally agreed by all parties, Mr. President was again  
informed that the preparations were concluded, and the  first step for  
the swap would commence on 1st August, 2015. Mr. President robustly gave
 his approval. On 4th August, 2015, the persons who were to be part  of 
the swap arrangements and all others involved in the operation were  
transported to Maiduguri, Borno State. This team, with the lead  
facilitator, continued the contact with the group holding the Chibok  
girls. The Service was able to further prove to the group its sincerity,
 as it established communication contact between it and its detained  
members. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"All things were in place for the swap which was mutually agreed.  
Expectations were high. Unfortunately, after more than two (2) weeks of 
 negotiation and bargains, the group, just at the dying moments, issued 
 new set of demands, never bargained for or discussed by the group 
before the movement to Maiduguri. All this while, the security agencies 
waited patiently. This development stalled what would have been the 
first  release process of the Chibok girls," he said.</blockquote>

The Minister also gave the details of two more swap attempts that were made following the failure of the first agreement.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"By the month of November, precisely 13th November, 2015, another  fresh
 negotiation process with the group was initiated. This time, there was 
the need to discuss a fresh component in other to avoid issues that had 
stalled the former arrangement. There were however some  problems that 
many may not discern, but should be expected in this kind  of situation.
 Some critical persons within the group who played such vital role in 
August, 2015 were discovered to be dead during combat action or as a 
result of the emerging rift amongst members of  the group then. These 
two factors delayed the process. By 30th November, 2015 it was becoming 
glaring that the division  amongst the group was more profound. This 
affected the swap process. By  10th December, 2015, another negotiation 
process was in place, but this  failed to achieve results because of the
 varying demands by the group,"  he said, assuring that in spite of the 
failures, negotiation continued  on new modalities to secure the release
 of the girls.</blockquote>

The Minister said since the beginning of 2016, the security agencies  
have not only remained committed but have also taken the lead to resolve
 the Chibok girls’ issue, in spite of the current division among members
 of the terrorist group, which has seriously affected the efforts</div>

He commended the security agencies whom, he said, have sacrificed  their
 time and energy, with some even paying the supreme price while  
fighting for the safe release of the girls, disclosing that many 
friendly countries and organizations have equally been very forthcoming 
 in providing their human and technological resources to assist in the  
process. Addressing the parents and relatives of the Chibok girls, 
Alhaji  Mohammed said:</div>

"We are with you; we feel your pains and shall not relent until we 
succeed in bringing home our girls and every other citizen  abducted by 
the group."</blockquote>

He also appealed to all those who have shown concern in resolving  this 
matter” to continue to trust the efforts of Government to deal with the 
situation.</div>

According to a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday by his Special
 Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the
 governor  described President Mohammadu Buhari as the major problem of Nigeria that Nigerians must solve, saying;<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
 “Our President, through his actions and inactions is destroying 
everything that makes Nigeria a country and well-meaning.Nigerians must 
stand-up to be counted in the crusade to save thecountry from going 
under.” </blockquote>

He also said Pres.Buhari should realise that “Nigerians will not
 measure his government on the basis of what his predecessors failed to
 do, but on what he does or neglected to do between May 29, 2016 and
May 29, 2019.”<br />

The governor said it was President Buhari that went to foreign
 countries to de-market Nigeria by calling all Nigerians thieves and
 dishonest people, asking;<br />

''Which foreign investor will invest his
 money in a country of dishonest people? Who made investors to leave
 Nigeria if not President Buhari, who created atmosphere of economic
 and political instability in the country by his acts of nepotism and
 vindictiveness? </blockquote>
Governor Fayose lamented that <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“President Buhari has not only taking
 Nigeria to economic recession, he has moved the country to economic
 depression and nepotism has prevented him from engaging even the best
 hands in his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
He said with the level of hunger in the country, President Buhari
 should rather get serious and be innovative with governance and stop
 his blame game, adding that;  </blockquote>

“No nation has ever reached greatness by
 their leaders engaging in blame game, nepotism and vengeance as being
 done by President Buhari and his APC government.”

The governor said “Nigerians must begin to speak out now before the
 country is totally destroyed by this one-man government, which does
 not see any idea coming from those perceived as opposed to the
 government as worthy of consideration.

“Like I said before, the main issue confronting Nigerians now is
 hunger and hunger does not speak the language of politics. It is
 therefore no longer about politics; it is about preventing hunger from
 killing Nigerians.”

Governor Fayose, who said the federal government should stop deceiving
 Nigerians with stories of injecting funds into the economy, added that
 the economic problems facing the country has gone beyond talks of
 injecting N350 billion into the economy through execution of capital
 projects.

“If they inject even N500 billion into the economy by paying
 contractors executing federal government capital projects, how does
 that affect the price of rice and other food items? How does it affect
 the price of basic drugs?

Instead of unsustainable measures, what President Buhari should do is

 political and ethnic affiliations so that they can proffer lasting
 solutions to the country’s economic problems.”</blockquote>

A
 former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. 
Ahmadu Ali has seen his party as a contending force for power in 2019, 
but said Nigerians will vote for President Muhammadu Buhari if he 
decides to present himself for another term in office.<br />

<br />

He stated that though Nigerians are currently criticising Buhari over
 his performance in office so far, they will be singing his praise a 
year from now as they would have forgotten their present complaints by 
then.<br />

<br />

Speaking with Saturday Sun, the Director-General of the Goodluck 
Jonathan/Mohammed Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation in 2015, 
said:<br />

<blockquote class="td_quote_box td_box_center">
“Buhari’s performance that you are criticizing now, give him another year, you will be singing his praise.<br />

“As far as Nigeria is concerned, they have forgotten the past, they 
will vote for him unless he is not standing. If Buhari is standing in 
2019, people will vote for him.”</blockquote>

Explaining why he sees the possibility of Buhari’s victory in 2019 
despite the present cries of Nigerians about hardship, Ali said:<br />

“In order to get 
something good, you have to do a radical surgery, that radical surgery 
the pain is what we are suffering from; I am telling you when the pains 
heal and we start enjoying the surgery that was put in place, we will be
 ready to vote again if it is the same Buhari because they will say if 
things go wrong, he knows how to fix it.”<br />

Ali, who noted that his party will be up against an uphill task if Buhari <em>“continues to perform well and he wants to come back”</em>, stated that such does not mean the PDP cannot defeat the President, adding that,<em>“after all he defeated us so we should be able to defeat him.”</em><br />

He went on to blame the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for 
the current leadership squabble in the PDP, stressing that their plan is
 to disorganize the opposition so the party in power can have peace.<br />

<br />

He continued that the current crisis rocking the former ruling party 
was also caused by western powers who are envious of PDP’s record of 
governing Nigeria for 16 uninterrupted years.<br />

<br />

The former minister stated that the forces, who he called enemy 
outside Nigeria, believe that leaving the PDP to continue in power after
 16 years, will make it grow into an impossible party which cannot be 
manipulated.<br />

“The PDP imbroglio is 
most unfortunate but it is all within the realm of politics. If APC 
finds that they are not performing excellently well and we who can claim

“And again our friends, the enemy outside Nigeria who believed that 
the PDP has broken such a record in the governance of Nigeria… 16 years

“So they believed that leaving the PDP to continue in that run, they 
will end up to become an impossible party that they cannot manipulate,

There
 is no gain saying the fact that the people of Kaduna state have been 
living in fear following the recent earth tremor that occurred in Qei 
and Jaba area of Jaba Local Government Area of the state. It also 
happened in in Kwoi and surrounding villages of Nok, Sanbah and Chori in
 Jama Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday 11th and Monday 
12th September, 2016.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a swift reaction to the incident on 
Wednesday, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) 
attributed the cause of the recent tremor in Jama Local Government Area 
of Kaduna State to Passive sources. NARSDA, which spoke through its head
 of media and corporate communications, Dr, Felix Ale said that the 
nature of the source will soon be determined after the completion of yet
 another on-going thorough and further investigation of the incident by 
experts in the Space Agency.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The current findings, according to 
NARSDA was the outcome of a preliminary report by the team of experts 
immediately deployed to the affected communities from one of the 
activity centres of the Space Agency: The Centre for Geodesy and 
Geodynamics for on the spot assessment and to carry out a survey and 
investigation on the incident.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The team which was led by the Head of 
Seismology division of the Space Agency, Dr. Ofonime Akpan, established 
that the Seismological Station of NASRDA located at Kujama in Kaduna 
State accurately recorded the unfortunate incident which made it easy 
for collation of data and early release of preliminary reports on the 
incident.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The analysis showed that the first event
 occurred at 12:28:16.50 seconds GMT on Sunday 11th September, 2016 and 
the event had an epicentre located Latitude 9.825N and Longitude 7.885 E
 while Local Magnitude was 2.6 and Moment Magnitude was 3.0 and Focal 
Depth was 10km. The report further revealed that the second event 
occurred on Monday 12th September, 2016 at 03:10:48.80 seconds (GMT) 
with Local Magnitude of 2.6 and Moment Magnitude of 2.9 with Focal Depth
 of 10km while the epicentre was Latitude 10.879N and Longitude 7.188E.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was followed immediately by another
 event at 03:11:20.00 seconds (GMT) located at an epicentre of Latitude 
9.927N and Longitude 7.297E, Local Magnitude 2.9 and Moment Magnitude 
3.0. The reports revealed that the time of occurrence of these events 
and intensities of the locations as reported by inhabitants of the 
communities which included cracks on walls of buildings, falling off of 
ceiling fans and other items corresponded with the results of analysis 
carried out by the team of experts from NASRDA’s Centre for Geodesy and 
Geodynamics.</div>

As
 more Nigerians continue calls for membership of the National 
Assembly-the Senate and House of Representative- to be made part-time 
due to the huge cost of running the two chambers, the Vice President, 
Professor Yemi Osinbajo has said such move would require a 
constitutional amendment.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Vice President, who was responding 
to comments from members during the 90th Anniversary of the Yoruba 
Tennis Club in Lagos yesterday, stressed that such change would “go 
through the National Assembly”, thereby making it the prerogative of the
 lawmakers to either adopt it or not.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the call for the autonomy of Federal 
Universities, Osinbajo said that would only be feasible if the 
institutions could finance themselves in all aspects.“ But as long as 
the government continues doing that, attainment of complete autonomy 
would be difficult,” he said.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Earlier, the Vice President, who was the
 guest speaker at the event, delivered a lecture titled: Revitalizing 
the Nigerian Economy: The Challenges and the Opportunities, in which he 
stated: “We have been talking about diversification for about 40 years, 
but we have not been able to achieve this due to lack of discipline,” 
stressing that the call only intensifies whenever there is crises in the
 oil sector.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Osinbajo who said that Nigeria is facing
 the “most challenging period” economically, which has plunged the 
country into a recession, said the government was doing its best to 
revive the economy with one of the ways being “Social Housing 
Initiative” which would be launched by the end of the year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He stressed that the idea was not just for job creation, but to also create an avenue where young Nigerians could own houses.</div>

Moves
 to steer the country out of economic recession has received a boost 
with the decision of the Federal Government to pump the sum of N350 
billion into the economy in the next few days as capital allocation to 
ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The implementation of the N5,000 monthly
 stipend social intervention programme of the government is also billed 
to commence at the end of this month with the release of N60 billion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Addressing journalists on these 
developments and government’s plan for the economy yesterday, the 
Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, said: “We are releasing another 
N350 billion. There will also be the funding of about N60 billion in the
 social intervention programme, and that is very important in terms of 
putting money into people’s pocket.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The finance minister stated that when 
the N350 billion is released and cash backed in a few days from now, it 
will bring the total amount released by the Federal Government to N770 
billion for capital projects from the N1.8 trillion budgeted in 2016.</div>

 first Apple customers in New York City to snap the new iPhone 7 off the
 shelves cheered as they entered its flagship store on Friday (September
 16), flanked by applauding sales staff.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Today is my 23 days outside Apple store
 here in New York City,” said Jaime Gonzalez in line before the store 
opened. “Last year I did it but then because I didn’t pre-order, that’s 
the reason that I didn’t went first. There was another lady from Europe 
who decided to take care of the No. 1 spot. But this is me and now in 
2016 it’s right to be No. 1 and I am going to be No. 1 this time.”</div>

“I’ve been here for a week and a half,” 
said Andreas Francis. “I was trying to get the 7 Plus and the new jet 
black, but they don’t have the 7 Plus or the jet black, so I ended up 
getting the regular black, then the 7.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Initial quantities of the iPhone 7 Plus 
have sold out globally, supplies of the larger size of Apple’s new phone
 have been exhausted in all shades, and the smaller iPhone 7 has also 
sold out in the new jet black color, the company said.</div>
